AirPair TECHNICAL NOTE

Date: June 16, 2008

Number: Draft
Supercedes: N/A
Issuer: Andy Carwardine
Title: AirPairTM / HorizonTM

The purpose of this document is to explain the installation process of a Dual Polarity Radio Mount
(DPRM) using either AirPair radios or Horizon Compact units.
The DPRM is used to mount two AirPair or Horizon radios/units to the same antenna. Using a DPRM,
both radios can transmit simultaneously, providing a doubling of traffic throughput or alternatively, a
redundancy option. The DPRM allows two radios to be mounted face to face, directing radio frequency
energy from both radios to a single antenna. One radio is oriented for vertical polarization, and the other
for horizontal polarization. It is recommended that different frequency channels be used for each unit.

Inspecting the DPRM

Before installing the DPRM on the antenna you should first inspect the unit. Refer to the DPRM RDRM
identification document (parts list) to verify that the appropriate unit was purchased.

Ensure that the DPRM waveguide opening is clean of dirt or dust and apply a thin film of lubricant/sealant (with the
tip of your finger) to the outer wall of the opening. The same should be done to the rubber gasket area on the
outside of the antennas waveguide opening. Highlighted in red (below) are the areas where the lubricant should be
applied.
Note: All DragonWave Horizon Compact shipments will come with a tube of Dow Corning valve lubricant/sealant

Installing the DPRM

As shown in the picture below, connect the DPRM to the antenna by attaching the 4 clips on the DPRM to the
mating “hooks” on the antenna itself.

Ensure that the polarity of the DPRM is correct by installing it with the polarity arrow as shown in the picture below
(right). The polarity arrow should be pointing up.

Once the DPRM is connected to the antenna, remove the gold cover over the radio waveguide ports on
both sides of the DPRM.

Shown below are the two sides of the DPRM with the caps removed. The side labeled ‘1’ is dedicated
for the AirPair radio/Horizon unit that will be transmitting receiving on the vertical plane, whereas the side
labeled ‘2’ is dedicated for the horizontally polarized radio.

Installing Radios/Units on the DPRM

Installing the vertically polarized unit – refer to the picture below to install the vertically polarized unit.
Ensure that the vertically polarized radio is connected to the side of the DPRM labeled ‘1’. Similar to the
process of connecting the DPRM to the antenna, connect the AirPair or Horizon radio to the DPRM by
attaching the 4 clips on the radio to the mating “hooks” on the DPRM itself.

The vertical polarization arrow on the radio should line up with the polarization arrow on the DPRM itself
(shown below left). Note: The radio can be connected to the DPRM with the polarization markers 180
degrees out of phase and still work, but is recommended that you follow the installation shown below so
that the two connectors (port 1 and port 2) are closest to the ground.
Note: improper installation (not matching polarization of radio with DPRM polarization markers) will result
in reduced RSL levels

Installing the horizontally polarized unit - Below right, shows how to attach the horizontally polarized
AirPair radio or Horizon unit. Ensure that the horizontal radio is connected to the side of the DPRM
labeled ‘2’.

When installing the horizontal radio, the polarization arrow on the unit will not match up with the marker
on the DPRM but as long as the polarization marker is on the horizontal plane it will transmit/receive
horizontally (shown below).
Note: improper installation (not matching polarization of radio with DPRM polarization markers) will result
in reduced RSL levels.
