WORKSHEET Semester 1 Chemistry DK014 – CHAPTER 2 1

WORKSHEET - Questions

CHAPTER 2.1

1. Choose the best answers:

Atomic nucleus was discovered by Rutherford who observed that some electrons /
α particles are reflected at unexpected angle by thin foil made of gold. Atomic nucleus
is built of protons and electrons / neutrons, called nucleons. Proton and electron have
opposite / the same charges. Neutron and proton have almost the same / different
mass. Mass of the atom is uniformly distributed in its volume / concentrated
in the nucleus. Contribution of electrons to the overall mass of the atom is negligible /
substantial. Two nuclei of the same element must contain the same number of protons
/ nucleons. Isotopes of the same element contain the same / different number
of protons and the same / different number of neutrons. If the relative atomic mass
of oxygen is 18, this means that oxygen atom is 18 times as heavy as the 126 C atom /
12
one twelfth of 6C atom.

2. Write the symbols for the isotopes on the basis of the following data:

a) Iron (Fe), number of protons 26, number of neutrons 30

b) Silver (Ag), number of electrons 47, number of neutrons 62
