ARGUMENTS
Speaking of the difference between discovery
and invention by the word itself, discovery
means that the unknown thing already existed
before, while invention means it was originally
made by the human thoughts.
According to the mathematical realist
explaining the concept of realism that the
existence of mathematics is objective and does
not depend on the human though. The
concepts of mathematics are separate in the
universe and exist to be uncovered and used
practically.
As stated by Leopold Kronecker, a Prussian
logician, and a mathematician that “God
created the natural numbers; all else is the
work of man.” He concluded that mathematics
is discovered even though it is a language and
a tool.
Based on the Platonic Theory, that the Greek
philosopher Plato came up with that
mathematics is a discovery which emphasizes
the universe’s structure.
In 1960, Eugene Wigner, a Nobel Physics
laureate, created the phrase “the unreasonable
effectiveness of mathematics” that conclude
that mathematics is real and a human
discovery.
Mathematics exists when there is nature and
natural events. Man has always had a sense of
math. The illustration of the connection of
matter and the universe is because of
mathematics.
JUSTIFICATION
Before the light bulbs was invented, the electricity
already existed before, it just that light bulbs
existed because humans made it possible to exist.
The concept discussed is similar in the concept of
mathematics; if it is discovered or invented.
In realism, discovering a new theorem is similar to
discovering a new species of animal. The existence
of animals has been for a long time even though
we haven’t discovered it yet, but humans have the
capacity to discover it, give names to it, and add
them up to our knowledge regarding animals.
Mathematical realists believed that aside from the
mathematics that we already know, there is more
math that we haven’t discovered yet. In a
mathematical universe where we live, there are
existing concepts that we might be able to discover
one day or not at all.
Arithmetic is not considered as a human invention;
the adding of numbers will always give you the
same result such as five added to five will always
give you ten as the answer. Humans invented the
language itself in order to express the result.
For example, gravity. The apple fell on the ground
at 9 m/s2 before it was known by humans. The
concept of gravity was discovered and the theory of
gravity was the one invented. He didn’t made the
force but he discovered the observation. The
mathematics will continuously work before humans
started using it.
Mathematics made up the universe, the more
mathematics is being understood by humans due
to its very wide and a pile of numbers, we are able
to appreciate or recognize the nature itself.
To put it in other words, mathematics exists without
the presence of humans, it was already there
before the evolution of humans up until human
extinction.
Many purely mathematical theories were developed
in a vacuum, no view to give descriptions to any
phenomena that exist physically, which have been
proven decades or even centuries later, that will
serve as a significant framework to explain how the
universe has been working all along.
Humans were gifted a sense of math wherein
he/she has the ability to identify quantities. Let’s
say the Neanderthal as an example, they have an
idea that it is better to kill more deer. In that case,
he had a sense of math because he sensed the
amount of those deer that he killed. The
Neanderthal does not have ideas regarding

pineapple’s structure. That sequence already
existed before he existed.
Plato used the “allegory of the cave” as an
illustration to describe the nature of mathematics.
There are a group of prisoners who were chained
in an underground cave facing the cavern wall.
Behind them, there are things that pass by in front
of a fire wherein the shadows of these things can
be seen on the cavern wall. The prisoners observe
the projected things on the wall, naming the
shadows, and concluding that they already
understand the world they live in. Analogously,
humans can only observe and able to understand a
cross-section of the fundamental truths of the
universe.
The universe itself and around us consists of many
patterns, hidden numbers, equation for it to be
invented by the brain of a human. Able to
understand and improve the world we live in will
reveal the math secrets. The techniques were just
invented to prove the theorem.
Mathematics consists of sets of rules that people
didn’t create that serves as boundaries to what can
be stated. A person could not simply state that
2+2=5 without following the existing rules about
addition. The invented part could possibly be the
figuring out with numbers.
Pythagoras’ theorem as an example, the right-
angled triangle’s square of the hypotenuse is equal
to the sum of the squares of the other sides. This is
factual because all right-angled triangles are on a
level surface.
