Solution of the questions

Activity
Solve the following questions:
1. What is an electromagnetic wave?
The electromagnetic waves are the combination of waves in electric and
magnetic fields produced by moving charges. That is, what ripples in
electromagnetic waves are electric and magnetic fields.
The creation of electromagnetic waves begins with a charged particle. This
particle creates an electric field that exerts a force on other particles. As the
particle accelerates, it oscillates in its electric field, which produces a magnetic
field. Once in motion, the electric and magnetic fields created by the charged
particle are self-perpetuating, this means that an electric field that oscillates as
a function of time will produce a magnetic field and vice versa.
2. What are the parameters in an electromagnetic wave?

 Amplitude: It is the highest value of the wave oscillations.

 Frequency: Number of cycles performed by the wave.
 Wavelength: Distance traveled by the wave in a cycle.
 Propagation speed:
 Wave number: Frequency magnitude which indicates the number of times
a wave vibrates in a unit of distance.
 Angular frequency: Frequency of circular motion expressed in proportion
to the change of angle.
 Polarization direction: It is the oscillation direction of the wave.

3. What is electrical permittivity ε and magnetic permeability μ of a medium?

 Electric permittivity ( ϵ): Is a physical parameter of materials that

describes how much they are affected by an electric field. The information of
the electric field is contained in the vectors E and D, where E is the intensity
and D is the electric displacement or electric flux density. It is the latter that
counts the influence of the field on a material (analogous to the vector B of
the magnetic field which is called "magnetic flux density" or "magnetic
induction" on a material)

The electrical permittivity of a vacuum is constant and is given by

ε =8.8541878176 x 1 0−12 C2 / N m2
 Magnetic permeability ( μ): ability of materials, media or substances to
affect and be affected by magnetic fields, as well as the ability to become
sources of these, that is, the ability to create them without the need for
external currents.

This magnitude is defined by the relationship between the magnetic

induction (also called magnetic flux density) and the magnetic excitation
that are affecting the interior of the material, and is represented by the
symbol μ

4. From the following wave equation:

2π ^
(
E y ( x , t )= A sen ( wt−kx ) ^j = A sen 2 πft−
λ )
x j=C1 sen ( C 2 x 103 t−C 3 x ) ^j

where C 1 , C2 and C 3correspond to the last 3 digits of your identification.

Notice that in the equation:

A=C1

w=2 πf =C 2 x 10 3

k= =C 3
λ
