Social Network Communication in Education

Communication has proven to be an important part of the everyday life. Over the past

few years, the evolution of communication has resulted in the development of new forms of

communication referred to as the social networks. The social networks have aided the

educational activities through content sharing.

Through social networks, students and the educational facilitators are likely to create and

share all kinds of content. The most common social networks used by students include Facebook,

Instagram, and Whatsapp. According to the online survey by the Pew Research center, students

spent in social networks more than websites and watching TV. According to the research, 96%

of the students engage on social networks. From the sample, 60% engage through class

discussion, sharing of lesson resources, and learning outside school (Vivian). The social

networks provide casual place for learning and encourage students to express their thought on

particular course. In particular, social networks provide an effective environment for learning

foreign languages.

However intense use of social networks have a detrimental implication on academic

achievement. Students who spent most of their time posting staffs on social media do not

concentrate effectively in class. Also, the students do not have the capabilities to pass in their

examinations. Studies reveal link the use of social networks to a detrimental outcomes in the

academic achievements(Akram and Rekesh 351). Some teenagers report being addicted to the

social media and thus squeeze their study time to attend to the posted content. Additionally,

students who spend time on social networks may find it difficult maintaining a social life.

Therefore, introducing social networks as learning platforms could divert student’s attention

from class activities.

Social networks allow users to post content for interactions. The communication through

the platforms have both detrimental and beneficial part of communication in education.

However, it is necessary for schools to practice safe communication in the social network

platforms.
