COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES

We use comparatives for making a comparison between two people or two things, Example:I think Sandra is nicer than

Maria.

 Add –r to one syllable adjectives ending in –e: (nice-nicer) (safe-safer)

 Add –er to other one syllable adjectives: (long-longer) (cheap-cheaper)

 Change -y to –ier in two syllable adjectives ending in –y: (happy-happier) (sunny-sunnier)

 Put more in front of other two-syllable adjectives: (boring- more boring) (honest- more honest)

 Put more in front of longer adjectives: (difficult- more difficult) (expensive-more expensive)

 Double the final consonant and add – er to some short adjectives ending in a single vowel and a single consonant:

(big-bigger) (hot- hotter)

We use superlatives to compare one person or thing with the others in a group. Example: She is tallest girl in the class.

Make superlative like this :

 Ends in est (small- smallest).

 Put most in front of longer adjectives: (difficult- most difficult) (expensive-most expensive)
