INTRODUTION

This painting depicts three goddesses from ancient

Greek mythology called the Graces , known in Greek as
the Charites . Originally goddesses of nature, they came
to be generally considered as companions of Aphrodite
(Venus), the goddess of Love and Beauty. According to
poetic and literary tradition, the Graces were three in
number, and their names were Euphrosyne, Thalia,
and Aglaia.

Eternally young and lovely, they represented charm,

beauty, and human creativity, and were depicted
naked, originally holding attributes such as apples,
roses, and sprigs of myrtle.

The poses of the figures in this painting were directly

inspired by an ancient marble statue in the Libreria
Piccolomini in the Duomo at Siena: the nymph in the
middle is seen from behind; the one on the left faces
the viewer, with her head turned to one side; the one
on the right is shown in profile, her head turned
toward the viewer.

The result resembles three different views of the same

figure. The three goddesses are linked together in a
ring, holding each other by the waist or neck to form a
graceful chain. This painting, with its smooth contours,
sinuous forms, and luminous colors is typical of
Regnault's style . The mythological subject served as a
pretext for painting three young women in graceful
poses, the pinkish-white of their flesh tones enhanced
by a dark background dotted with tiny flowers.

The contrast of light and shade and the pure "Greek

style" lines reflect Regnault's charming brand of
neoclassicsim , expressed with almost excessive
perfection.
THE THREE GRACES
RAFAEL

The Three Graces is an oil painting by Italian painter Raphael, housed in the Musée Condé of Chantilly , France. The date of
origin has not been positively determined, though it seems to have been painted at some point after his arrival to study
with Pietro Perugino in about 1500, possibly 1503-1505. According to James Patrick in 2007's Renaissance and
Reformation, the painting represents the first time that Raphael had depicted the nude female form in front and back views.

THE THREE GRACES
PETER PAUL RUBENS

The Three Graces is a Baroque style mythological painting by famous Flemish/Netherlandish painter and draughtsman,
Peter Paul Rubens . The painting, done on oil and wood, was created back in 1639. Rubens was trained in Antwerp but he
received his Italian influences when he travelled to Italy during the year 1600 and absorbed the works of iconic Italian
artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, Caravaggio, Correggio , etc. As far as his painting style is concerned, he was
fond of painting scenes which had numerous individuals. Thus, his works always have that ‘overflowing’ effect. He used a
wide range of impastos in order to create clear and smooth surfaces in his paintings, which seemed almost plastic-like! He
was also a perfectionist and liked to pay attention to intricate details.

THE THREE GRACES
ANTONIO CANOVA

Antonio Canova’s statue The Three Graces is a Neoclassical sculpture, in marble, of the mythological three charites,
daughters of Zeus – identified on some engravings of the statue as, from left to right, Euphrosyne, Aglaea and Thalia –
who were said to represent youth/beauty (Thalia), mirth (Euphrosyne), and elegance (Aglaea). The Graces presided over
banquets and gatherings, to delight the guests of the gods. As such they have served as subjects for historical artists
including Sandro Botticelli and Bertel Thorvaldsen.

A version of the sculpture is in the Hermitage Museum, another is owned jointly and exhibited in turn by the Victoria and
Albert Museum and the National Galleries of Scotland.

WOJCIECH SIUDMAK

'Three Graces' was created by Wojciech Siudmak in Fantastic Realism style. Siudmak is close to Dali by his brilliance in
portraying the three-dimensional illusion of space, by his sense of light and shade.

Wojciech Kazimierz "Wojtek" Siudmak is a Polish painter, currently living in France. His works are often used as
illustrations for science fiction and fantasy literature, including the Polish edition of Frank Herbert's Dune series. He is
also known for his work on album covers, including the award-winning cover for Eloy's 1977 album Ocean.

EDWARD BURNE-JONES

Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet ARA (28 August 1833 – 17 June 1898) was a British artist and designer
closely associated with the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, who worked closely with William Morris
on a wide range of decorative arts as a founding partner in Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Burne-Jones was
closely involved in the rejuvenation of the tradition of stained glass art in Britain; his stained-glass include
windows in St. Philip's Cathedral, Birmingham, St Martin in the Bull Ring, Birmingham, Holy Trinity Church, Sloane
Square, Chelsea, St Martin's Church in Brampton, Cumbria (the church designed by Philip Webb), St Michael's
Church, Brighton, All Saints, Jesus Lane, Cambridge, St Edmund Hall and Christ Church, two colleges of the
University of Oxford. His stained glass works also feature in St. Anne's Church, Brown Edge, Staffordshire
Moorlands and St.Edward the Confessor church at Cheddleton Staffordshire. Burne-Jones's early paintings show
the heavy inspiration of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but by the 1860s Burne-Jones was discovering his own artistic
"voice". In 1877, he was persuaded to show eight oil paintings at the Grosvenor Gallery (a new rival to the Royal
Academy). These included The Beguiling of Merlin. The timing was right, and he was taken up as a herald and
star of the new Aesthetic Movement.

simply Pontormo, was an Italian Mannerist painter and portraitist from the Florentine School. His work represents
a profound stylistic shift from the calm perspectival regularity that characterized the art of the Florentine
Renaissance. He is famous for his use of twining poses, coupled with ambiguous perspective; his figures often
seem to float in an uncertain environment, unhampered by the forces of gravity.

Primavera, is a large panel painting in tempera paint by the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli made in
the late 1470s or early 1480s (datings vary). The painting depicts a group of figures from classical mythology in a
garden, but no story has been found that brings this particular group together. Most critics agree that the
painting is an allegory based on the lush growth of Spring, but accounts of any precise meaning vary, though
many involve the Renaissance Neoplatonism which then fascinated intellectual circles in Florence.

THE THREE GRACES
JEAN-BAPTISTE CARPEAUX

These three dancing figures are a smaller, plaster version of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux's marble "Dance," which
crowned the façade of the Paris Opéra. When the sculpture was unveiled, the public, accustomed to the idealism
of the neoclassical style, was outraged. Carpeaux's realistic rendering of female flesh provoked vandalism and
threats of removal. Carpeaux's erotically charged group at the same time generated fascination and interest, the
sculptor produced numerous bronze, plaster, and terra-cotta copies of heads, single figures, and groups from his
composition.

CORREGGIO

The Three Graces, a classical theme that became popular in the Renaissance, was based upon Roman sculptures
of the subject, including a well-known group that survived in Siena. It was rendered in reliefs and paintings,
including the small picture by Raphael. Correggio's approach is loose and while the figures are intended to
represent marble, they reveal soft flesh that is nothing like cold stone, and their proportions are full almost to the
point of exaggeration.

LUCAS CRANACH, THE ELDER

In the late period of creativity, the artist prefers small formats, “plaques”, executed with great care and requiring
consideration from a close distance. Such cabinet pictures of the artist’s late period of creativity were intended
for the niches of the cabinet of curiosities of nobles or patricians. It is no coincidence that Lucas Cranach
chooses topics such as Venus, Judith, Paris Court, Diana, Lucretia, and Mesalians, which suit the taste of high-
ranking customers, as well as other ancient and mythological themes.

LUCAS CRANACH, THE ELDER

Lucas was born at Kronach in central Germany and his precise date of birth is anonymous. He cultured the art of
illustration from his dad Hans Maler who was a painter. How Cranach obtains basic education is unknown but it
was undoubtedly with indigenous south German teachers. Bestowing to Gunderam, Cranach verified his aptitudes
as a watercolorist before the end of the 15th century. His artwork depicted the devotion of Duke Frederick III who
devoted Cranach to his courtyard in the year 1504. Cranach also coated religious themes, primarily in the
Catholic custom, and later vexing to treasure new ways of carrying Lutheran devout disquiets in art. This
sharpened his artistic journey. He was persistent during the course of his career to daub nude issues drawn from
folklore and belief. Among his many amazing artworks, Lucas Cranach has received lots of appreciation for the
three Graces portrait.

JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID

Mary Being Disarmed by Venus is the last painting produced by the French artist Jacques-Louis David. He began it in 1822 (aged 73)
during his exile in Brussels and completed it three years later, before dying in an accident in 1825. He sent it to an exhibition in Paris
from his exile, knowing that by then Romanticism was ascendant in the Salon. In 2007 it was displayed in the main hall of the Royal
Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, close to entrace.

At over 3 m (10 ft) high it is an imposing work. Set before a temple floating in the clouds, Venus the goddess of love and her followers,
the three Graces and Cupid, are shown taking away the weapons, helmet, shield and armour of Mars the god of war. He allows himself
to be disarmed and gives in to Venus's charms. Most of David's models for it were figures involved in the Théâtre de la Monnaie: Venus
was modelled by the actress Marie Lesueur, Cupid by Lucien Petipa, Mars by a subscriber or 'abonné', and one of the Graces by the
Prince of Orange's mistress.

The Three Ages of Man and Death is an oil on canvas painting created between 1541 and 1544 by the German
artist Hans Baldung which is in the collection of the Prado Museum. [1]The work is an allegorical painting
alluding to the transience of beauty and the fragility of human life. Death with his hourglass and broken lance has
already taken the arm of the old woman who is in turn holding on to the younger one. A baby lies sleeping on the
ground. In the lower background is a depiction of Hell with above a crucified Christ in a shaft of heavenly light,
representing the opposing visions of life after death. The owl at bottom left is a symbol of wisdom warning of the
consequences of sin.It is part of a set of similarly themed paintings by Baldung, the others of which are The Three
Ages of Woman and Death and The Three Graces.
