STATUS LED
The LED, through a colour code, shows B.R.A.IN status. Following is the colours code:
• POWER ON: the green flashing LED means that B.R.A.IN is switched on but hasn’t
established a Bluetooth connection with a device yet;
• BT CONNECTION: the blue flashing LED means that B.R.A.IN successfully connected
with a device;
• ANOMALY: the red flashing LED means that there is a system’s anomaly. On the APP
will be displayed the anomaly’s details;
• LOW BAT: the yellow flashing LED means that B.R.A.IN’s rechargeable battery is
empty and needs to be recharged.
CHARGER connector
The connector on the lower part of the panel allows the recharge of the batteries inside
B.R.A.IN.
Connecting the supplied battery charger, the batteries will be recharged. It is possible to
use B.R.A.IN during the recharge.
ATTENTION: we recommend to use only the original battery charger supplied by SISGEO to
avoid damaging the batteries and B.R.A.IN itself.
NOTE: during the re-charge, ONLY the led on the battery charger will switch on; instead
there will be no led flashing on B.R.A.IN panel.
RESET
It is possible to force B.R.A.IN reset keeping the button on the panel pushed for 10
seconds.
As soon as B.R.A.IN will receive the reset command, the LED will flash repeatedly with the
sequence of two short and one long flash.
When this sequence is shown, release the button: the LED will start to flash green. After
this operation, in some cases will be necessary to pair again the reel with the APP.
The smartphone/tablet where the APP is installed must be compatible with BLE (Bluetooth Low
Energy) from version 4.1 onward.
The APP can be downloaded from the app stores of both O.S. (Google Play Store for Android and
App Store for Apple).
Search for the APP and then click on Install key, the APP will be dowloaded and then installed
on the device.
With the Android O.S. it is possible to install the APP also using directly the APK (Android
Application Package) of the app.
The APK file can be supplied by SISGEO in case of connection problems to Google Play Store.
In this situation, it’s necessary to enable the installation of apps of unknown source.
This option is usually in the menu “Advanced Settings - Safety - Unknown source”. Please refer
to your device manual for more information.
NOTE: the PIN is common among all B.R.A.INs since B.R.A.IN doesn’t record data, so there
is no safety risk for the acquired data.
Data are stored exclusively on the device used for the inclinometer test.
In order to perform the first connection proceed as follows:
• switch on B.R.A.IN pressing POWER ON key
• on the device (smartphone/tablet) enter in the BT menu and search for the name of the
B.R.A.IN just switched on.
• Selecting B.R.A.IN, a menu will be opened where you can insert the PIN in order to
perform the pairing:

manufacturer user manual.
MEASUREMENTS Inclinometer casing survey consists in a number of readings at regular steps of the tilt of
the inclinometer probe.
Probe shall be moved incrementally along the casing, whereby for ISO 18674-3 each
increment shall not exceed the gauge length of the probe (500 or 1000 mm).
reference
1 The inclinometer casing should be installed with one keyway in the reference direction.
In vertical boreholes, the reference direction should be the direction of the anticipated
keyway
principal movement OR the keyway closer to geographic north.
The keyway in the reference direction shall be the reference keyway and shall be durably
marked, for example, by cutting a notch at the top of the guide tube into that keyway or by
4 2 identifying it by a water-resistant and wear-resistant mark.
Inclinometer’s casing keyways, once installed, are identified with numbers 1-2-3-4,
clockwise; the keyway in the reference direction is the key way “1”.
3 The below scheme shows SISGEO probe sign convention: the lower wheel and letter A are
the probe’s reference side. If you place the probe vertically on an horizontal flat surface and
tilt it in the arrows direction, channel A and B readings (the 2 orthogonal axis) take different
signs.
reference wheel B

reference wheel
where:
A1B1 is the run with probe’s reference wheel in keyway 1
A3B3 is the run with probe’s reference wheel in keyway 3 (reverse or conjugated run)
A2B2 is the run with probe’s reference wheel in keyway 2
A4B4 is the run with probe’s reference wheel in keyway 4 (reverse or conjugated run)
The first complete survey is called “reference reading” and is the survey compared to
which will be calculated all the future displacements of the inclinometer’s casing.
For establishing a reliable reference set, there should be, in the reference reading, at least
two repetitions of the initial measuring survey whereby each survey consists of a normal
(0°) and a reverse (180°) run along the guide tube (usually A1B1 - A3B3), under repeatable
conditions.
We suggest to take reference readings on four keyways (A1B1 - A3B3 - A2B2 - A4B4),
because sometimes casing could deform, preventing probe’s readings, while the
perpendicular keyways can still be used.
Before inserting the inclinometer probe in the casing, we advice to check casing’s accessibility
using the dummy probe, which has to slide along the casing with the reference wheels put
in all the 4 keyways.
The stability of the readings is critical for a correct measurement. Therefore, at the beginning
of a survey, the measuring probe shall be brought to the point furthest from the collar of the
guide tube (lower part of the casing) and left there to adjust to the ambient temperature until
the readings are considered to be sufficiently stable. We suggest a minimum stabilization
time of 10 minutes.
Advices:
• Use always the same inclinometer system (probe-B.R.A.IN reel) to survey the casing.
• Use the pulley and cable stop or the cable stop.
• When you move from a level to the next one, record the data only when the values are stable.
• Avoid pulls and excessive speed in the probes’ recovery.
The inclinometer reading consists in a survey, at regular steps, of the inclinometer casing
tilt compared to the horizontal.
The step is usually the same of the wheels assembly distance (gauge length).
For establishing a reliable reference set, there should be, in the reference measurement,
at least two repetitions of the initial measuring survey whereby each survey consists of a
normal and a reverse run along the inclinometer tube under repeatable conditions.
The inclinometer casing should be installed with one keyway in the reference direction.
In horizontal and inclined boreholes, the reference direction should be the “top” of the
borehole. The keyway which is in the reference direction shall be the reference keyway and
shall be durably marked, for example, by cutting a notch at the top of the guide tube into
that keyway or by identifying it by a water-resistant and wear-resistant mark. Inclinometer’s
casing keyways, once installed, are identified with numbers 1-2-3-4, clockwise; the keyway
in the reference direction is the keyway “1”.

Advices:
• Use always the same inclinometer system (probe-B.R.A.IN reel) to survey the casing.
• Use the pulley and cable stop or the cable gate
• When you move from a level to the next one, record the data only when the values are

• Avoid pulls and excessive speed in the probes’ recovery.
After the configuration of at least a SITE and a CASING it will be possible to execute the
inclinometer measurement.
Proceed as follows in order to execute the inclinometer measurement:
• Select START
• Select SURVEY, then the SITE and lastly the CASING where the inclinometer survey
will be executed:
If there are already measurements for the CASING, it will be possible to select a measure in
order to use it as reference reading for the next measure it will be executed.
Otherwise, select NO REFERENCE READING in case you don’t want to refer the inclinometer
survey to any previous reading.
Clicking on the top-right arrow, it will be displayed the page showing the last options to be
configured before the reading:
• SURVEY NUMBER: by default it will be suggested the number “0” if in the current
casing there are no other surveys. if there would be other surveys, the proposed
number automatically will be the next one referring to the last survey
• DELAY: by default it is suggested “Manual”, so, the operator shall tap during the survey
in order to record the measure. Otherwise it will be suggested time steps in order to
execute the survey automatically.
• DIRECTION: it will be possible to select whether to execute the survey starting from
the bottom (UPWARD) or from the top (DOWNWARD)
Pressing on CONFIRM the survey will start.
In case you enabled, in the APP settings, the measure stability notification (you find more
info in the chapter “SETTING MENU”), it will be displayed a warning telling the user to wait
at least 10 minutes before executing the measure. This will allow the probe to sabiliize its
temperature at the bottom hole.
Pressing on OK, will start the probe’s reading page.
It will display a timer that runs a 10 minutes countdown. The light blue button warns the user
about the time to be waited until the inclinometer measuerement can start, as suggested
by SISGEO.
It’s anyway possible to start immediately the inclinometer survey, without waiting the 10
minutes, pressing on the light blue button, that will become green confirming the start of the
inclinometer survey. For the detailed description of reading page, please refer to APPENDIX 6.
NOTE: To change the number of deciman values of A and B channels readings, tap on the
value and it will chage from 2 to 1 to 0, then again 2.
It’s possible to view the current measure’s data anytime pressing on the button DATA:
Once all the measure steps have been executed, the READ button will become grey and can’t
be selected anymore. The button SAVE, grey and not-selectable until now, it will become
green and it will be possible to save the survey just ended.
Before the ending of the survey and the data saving, it will be possible to insert some text
notes about to the survey that will be recorded in the XML file.
Once you select CONFIRM, it will be confirmed the survey saving through a page where it
will be possible to view immediately the graph of the survey just ended (selecting DATA).
At the end select FINISH.
It will show the list of of the readings executed with reference of date and time.
From the list select the SURVEY you want to check the readings: it will open a table with all
the readings at their measure steps.
Swiping left on the page you will pass from the table, to the graphs of the measure.
Below you can find the basic information for data processing.
The values (digits) displayed and stored by B.R.A.IN APP can be converted in degrees
according to the following formula:
digits = (sin α) x K
and so:
α = ARCSIN ( digits / K )
In order to calculate the probe displacement from vertical at each step, proceed with the
following formula:
where:
DA, i = probe local displacements in A-axis direction at the generic step “i”
DB, i = probe local displacements in B-axis direction at the generic step “i”
Now, to calculate the resultant displacement and its direction at the generic step “i”, use
the following formula:
where:
where:
The same formula can be used also to calculate the total cumulative displacement in A-axis
and B-axis, by replacing “Di” with “DA, i” or “DB, i”
The total cumulative displacement calculation must be done considering that one end
of the casing is not subject to movements (usually deepest point as reference point), or
considering the absolute displacements of the casing taken, for example, by means of
topographic measurements.
To calculate the probe displacement from horizontal at each step, proceed with the
following formula:
D i = L x sin α i
where:
In order to calculate the total cumulative vertical displacement, proceed with the following
formula:
where:
The same formula can be used also to calculate the total cumulative displacement in A-axis
and B-axis, by replacing “Di” with “DA, i” or “DB, i”
The total vertical cumulative displacement calculation must be done considering that one
end of the casing is not subject to movements, or considering the absolute displacements
of the casing taken, for example, by means of topographic measurements.
Check-sums should be used as the basis for the acceptance test of the readings and for
identifying erroneous measurements.
If readings are incorrect or in doubt, the inclinometer survey shall be repeated.
The check-sum is the sum of the normal and reverse readings taken at the same depth “i”.
Ideally, the sum is zero since the readings have opposite signs.
Basically, however, variations in the positioning of the probe and zero offsets of the probe
contribute to non-zero check-sums.
The check-sums can be affected by sediments in the keyways, by inclinometer casing
deformation and from the wheel positioning near the couplings.
Common practice is plotting the check-sums of all measuring points over the inclinometer
guide tube.
In normal circumstances, each combination of probe and guide tube has a unique check-
sum signature, which is repeatable in each follow-up measurement.
Small variations do not usually indicate a problem, however, spikes in the plot are indicative
of inconsistencies in the readings.
SISGEO suggests a check of the inclinometer system in our laboratory in case of check-
sum values higher than 50digit.
KLION software automatically calculates the check-sums and generates plots.
