1) A pipe joins two reservoirs whose head difference is 10m. The pipe is 0.2m
diameter, 1000m in length and has f value of 0.032.
I. What is the flow in pipeline?
II. It is required to increase the flow to downstream reservoir by 30%. This is
to be done adding a second pipe of the same diameter that connects at some
point along the old pipe and runs down to the lower reservoir.
Assuming the diameter and the friction factor are the same as the
old pipe.
How long should the new pipe be?

2) for horizontal parallel plates, the top plate moving and the bottom plate
stationary, having laminar flow of fluid through the gap between plates (‘a’
distance),
Derive the following;
i) velocity distribution equation
ii) maximum velocity of flow
iii) Discharge per unit width (q)
iv) Shear stress across any section ()

If μ=0.09 Ns/m2, a=0.01m, U=1m/s

Pressure difference between the sections 60m apart= 60 KN/m2
Find the above parameters.

3) assume a velocity distribution in boundary layer in the form of

u=U sin (πy/2) and
Find:
a) the shear stress on the plate
b) Boundary layer thickness (*,e,θ)
c) Drag force

4) The Arba Minch town water supply is pumped from the forty springs
(elevation 0.0m from datum) to the two reservoirs (one at the site of
Bekele Mola, elevation 150m from datum, the other at St. Mary Church
elevation 200m above datum). The minor head loses are given in terms of
equivalent pipe length (Le1=20m, Le2=15m and Le3=10m). Determine the
pumping rate and discharges to each reservoir.
Refer Fig.1 Pump head = 350 m

5) Determine the magnitude and direction of flow rates in all the pipes in the
network shown below after making two sets of corrections. Use the DW
equation to relate head losses to flow rates and Moody Chart to determine
f. For simplicity, take n = 2.0 and all pipes are cast iron (e=0.25). Assume
complete turbulence to determine f.

6) a) For a horizontal circular pipe of radius R, having laminar flow of fluid
through it, derive the following;
I- Velocity distribution equation
II- maximum velocity of flow
III- discharge flowing through the pipe

b) Oil (S = 0.85,  = 1.8 * 10-5 m2/sec) flows in a 10 cm diameter pipe

at 0.5 lit/sec. Find the centerline velocity, the velocity at r = 2cm, the shear
stress and the head loss per meter pipe length.

7) For the pipe line system in the vertical section shown in figure below,
determine the pressure, P2. There are 100m and 150mm diameter cast iron
pipe and 30m and 75mm diameter of galvanized iron pipe.
Water flow rate is 0.01m 3/s, the water pressure is 20 0c, and the gauge
pressure at 1 is 250 kPa.
At 200c of water ν=1.007*10-6 m2/s
For 450 elbow K=0.35, for 900 elbow K=0.75 and for 0.20, for contraction take
Kc=0.33 (D2/D1 =0.5). e=0.25 for cast iron pipe and e=0.15 for Galvanized
pipe.
