Answers
(1) 60°
(2) 20

Step 1
Let us see the number of tiles with perfect square number on them: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81,
100, 121.

Step 2
11 tiles will be removed, and we're now left with 121 - 11 tiles, or 110 tiles. Now the tiles with
perfect square number on them will be: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100.

Step 3
10 tiles are removed again, now we're left with 110 - 10 = 100.

Step 4
Similarly this time the maximum number is 100, so there will be 10 tiles with perfect square on
them.

Step 5
After 10, there'll will be 100 - 10 = 88, so there will be 9 numbers with perfect squares.

Step 6
We can see that we removed 10 tiles two times, and then 9 tiles two times, and in a similar manner
we'll have to remove them two times till the number reaches 1.

Step 7
This means the number of times this operation has been re done will be 2 x 10 = 20.

(3) 211

Step 1
Let x = 1.131313...... equation(1)
Let us multiply both sides by 100:
100x = 113.1313.... equation(2)

Step 2
Let us subtract equation(1) from the equation(2):
100x - x = (113.1313...) - (1.131313......)
⇒ 99x = 112
112
⇒x=
99
p 112
⇒ = (Writing x as p/q)
q 99
Now, p = 112 and q = 99
⇒ p + q = 112 + 99
⇒ p + q = 211

Step 3
Therefore, the value of (p + q) is 211.

(4) -0.75

Step 1
Equation of the line y = mx + c.

Step 2
Substitute first point in the equation:
-11 = 2m + c
-11 - c
⇒m= --------(1)
2

Step 3
Substitute second point in the equation:
13 = -4m + c
13 - c
⇒m= --------(2)
-4

Step 4
On equating value of m from both equations:
-11 - c 13 - c
=
2 -4
⇒ 44 + 4c = 26 - 2c
⇒ 6c = -18
⇒ c = -3

Step 5
Put c = -3 in equation (1), we get:
m = -4

Step 6
Equation of the line: y = -4x + c
We know that if a line intersect with x-axis, value of it's ordinate will be 0.
Therefore, 0 = -4x + (-3)
or, x = -0.75

Step 7
The x-intercept of the line is -0.75.

(5) Area : 36 cm 2

Step 1
Let's assume the smallest side of the triangle be x cm.

Step 2
According to the question, one side of the triangle is 22 cm longer than the smallest side,
The length of the side = x + 22

Step 3
The third side is 1 cm less than 9 times the smallest side,
the length of the third side = 9x - 1

Step 4
The perimeter of the triangle is 54 cm,
Therefore, x + (x + 22) + (9x - 1) = 54
⇒ x + x + 22 + 9x - 1 = 54
⇒ 11x = 54 + 1 - 22
33
⇒x=
11
⇒x=3
Now, x + 22 = 3 + 22 = 25,
9x - 1 = (9 × 3) - 1 = 26

Step 5
Therefore, all sides of the triangle are 3 cm, 25 cm and 26 cm.

Step 6
Following picture shows the triangle,

The area of the ΔABC can be calculated using Heron's formula, since all sides of the triangle are
known.
S = 54/2 = 27 cm
The area of the ΔABC = √[ S (S - AB) (S - BC) (S - CA) ]
= √[ 27(27 - 3) (27 - 25) (27 - 26) ]
= 36 cm2

(6) 6 hours

Step 1
Let us assume that Shweta drives at a usual speed of S km/hr and takes t hours to cover a certain
distance.

According to the question,

2
If, speed = × S km/hr
3
Time = t + 3 hours

Step 2
We know that the distance travelled in both the cases remains same.

Also, Distance = Speed × Time

2
So, S × t = × S × (t + 3)
3
2
⇒ St = S(t + 3)
3
2 6
⇒ St = St + S
3 3
2 6
⇒ St - St = S
3 3
1 6
⇒ St = S
3 3
⇒t=6

Step 3
Thus, the time taken by her to cover the distance with usual speed is 6 hours.

(7) 9

Step 1
The diagonal of a polygon is the line segment that connects non-adjacent vertices of a polygon.

Step 2
Let us consider a polygon with n sides.
n(n - 3)
We know, the total number of diagonals of a polygon with n sides =
2

Step 3
According to the question, the number of diagonals in the convex polygon are 27.
n(n - 3)
Therefore, 27 =
2
⇒ 54 = n 2 - 3n
⇒ n2 - 3n - 54 = 0
⇒ (n - 9)(n + 6) = 0
Either, (n - 9) = 0 or (n + 6) = 0
Since, a polygon never have 0 or less than zero sides,
and hence, (n + 6) ≠ 0.
Therefore, (n - 9) = 0
⇒n=9

Step 4
Thus, the given polygon has 9 sides.

(8) 11

Step 1
Let the number of 3-marks question be x. Then, the number of 4-marks questions = 20 - x.

Step 2
The total marks secured will be equal to: 3x + 4(20 - x) = 80 - x.

Step 3
Total marks secured by Matthew = 69. Thus,
80 - x = 69
or, x = 11.

Step 4
The number of 3-marks questions Matthew attempted is 11.

(9) 6 liters of S 1 and 4 liters of S 2

Step 1
Let the quantities of solutions mixed together be x and y. The first equation, according to the
question, is x + y = 10 as their quantities sum up to a total of 10 litres.

Step 2
70
The quantity of acid in one litre of the first solution will be equal to × 1 = 0.7 litre.
100

Step 3
60
Similarly, the quantity of acid in one litre of the second solution will be equal to × 1 = 0.6
100
litres.

Step 4
66
The quantity of acid in one litre of the final mixture is × 1 = 0.66 litres.
100

Step 5
Since, the first and second solutions are mixed in their respective quantities to 10 litres of the final
equation, we can say that x × 0.7 + y × 0.6 = 10 × 0.66
or, 0.7x + 0.6y = 6.6

Step 6
We now have two linear equations in two variables. Let us solve them:

x + y = 10
or, x = 10 - y ------(1)
0.7x + 0.6y = 6.6 ------(2)
Substitute the value of x in equation (2)
0.7(10 - y) + 0.6y = 6.6
or, 7 - 0.7y + 0.6y = 6.6
or, 0.1y = 0.4
or, y = 4
Substitute the value of y in equation (1)
x = 10 - 4 = 6

Step 7
Hence, 6 litres of solution S1 and 4 litres of solution S2 are mixed together to form the given
solution.
