(3) 160 cm2

Step 1
There are three equations we need to know in this type of question - the total surface area of a
cylinder, the curved surface area of a cylinder, and the surface area of a sphere.

Step 2
The curved surface area of a cylinder of radius 'r' and height 'h' is 2πrh. Here we know the sphere
is enclosed in the cylinder, so h=2r, and the formula now becomes 4πr2.

Step 3
The total surface area of the same cylinder will be the sum of the curved area and the surface area
of the two circles at top and bottom. So, total surface area of the cylinder = 4πr2 + 2πr2 = 6πr2

Step 4

And of course, the sphere will have the radius 'r'. So, its surface area is 4πr 2.

Step 5
From these equations, we see that for this case, the surface area of the sphere is the same as the
2
curved surface area of the cylinder, and of the total surface area of the cylinder.
3

Step 6

Here, we know that the curved surface area of the cylinder is 160 cm 2. We need to find the
surface area of the sphere.

Step 7

Using step 5, we get the surface area of the sphere = 160 cm2

(4) 18π cm 3

Step 1
4
The volume of a sphere of radius r = πr3
3

Step 2
If it fits perfectly within a cube, this means the length/width/height of the cube is the same as the
diameter of the sphere i.e. 2r.

Step 3

The volume of a cube of side 2r = (2r) 3 = 8r3.

Step 4

So, 8r3 = 108 cm3

This means, r3 = 13.5 cm3

Step 5
4
We know, volume of the sphere = πr3
3
4
Subsituting the value of r3 in the above equation,we get the volume = π × 13.5 = 18π cm3
3

(5) 10 cm

Step 1
Take a look at the following image:

Here, A is the center of the first circle and B the center of the second circle. The common chord is
CD.
Join AD and BD. Now, consider ∠ABC and ∠ABD. We have,
AC = AD (Radius of the circle with centre A)
BC = BD (Radius of the circle with centre B)
AB = AB (common)
Hence, ∠ABC ≅ ∠ABD by SSS.
So, ∠AOC = ∠AOD by CPCT. Also, AO = OB and CO = DO by CPCT.

ID : U-312163-3-2364-IMO [6]
Also, ∠AOC + ∠AOD = 180° (angles on a straight line)
⇒ ∠AOC + ∠AOC = 180°
⇒ 2 × ∠AOC = 180°
⇒ ∠AOC = 90°

Now, we know that the line AB bisects CD, and is perpendicular to it.
Also, the perpendicular from C to AB is half the length of CD. Let us call this length as L.
1
Area of ΔABC = × AB × L
2

Step 2
By Heron's formula, area of ΔABC = ,
AB + BC + CA 13 + 5 + 12
where, S = = = 15 cm
2 2
and a,b, and c are the length of three sides of the triangle. So, area of ΔABC =
= 30 cm

Step 3
1 1
Area of ΔABC = 30 cm = × AB × L = × 12 × L
2 2
2 × 30
Therefore, L = = 5 cm
12
Length of CD = 2L = 2 × 5 cm = 10 cm

(6) 8

Step 1
The diagonal of a polygon is the line segment that connects non-adjacent vertices of a polygon.

Step 2
Let us consider a polygon with n sides.
n(n - 3)
We know, the total number of diagonals of a polygon with n sides =
2

Step 3
According to the question, the number of diagonals in the convex polygon are 20.
n(n - 3)
Therefore, 20 =
2
⇒ 40 = n 2 - 3n
⇒ n2 - 3n - 40 = 0
⇒ (n - 8)(n + 5) = 0
Either, (n - 8) = 0 or (n + 5) = 0
Since, a polygon never have 0 or less than zero sides,
and hence, (n + 5) ≠ 0.
Therefore, (n - 8) = 0
⇒n=8

Step 4
Thus, the given polygon has 8 sides.

(7) Area : 192 cm 2

Step 1

The area of the triangle ABC can be calculated using Heron's formula, since all sides of the
triangle are known.
S = (11 + 13 + 20)/2 = 22 cm.
The area of the ΔABC = √[ S(S - AB) (S - BC) (S - CA) ]
= √[ 22(22 - 13) (22 - 20) (22 - 11) ]
= 66 cm 2

Step 2
2 × Area(ΔABC)
The height(BD) of the ΔABC =
AC
2 × 66
=
11
= 12 cm

Step 3

In right angled ΔBDC, DC2 = BC2 - BD2

⇒ DC = √[ BC 2 - BD2 ]
= √[ (20)2 - (12) 2 ]
= 16 cm
The area of the rectangle BDCE = BD × DC
= 12 × 16
= 192 cm2

(9) 0

Step 1
It is given that,

x2 + y 2
⇒ =1
xy
⇒ x 2 + y2 = xy
⇒ x 2 + y2 - xy = 0 ------(1)

Step 2

Now, x3 + y3 can be written as:

(x + y)(x2 - xy + y 2)
= (x + y)(0)......(Using equation (1))
=0

Step 3

Therefore, the value of x3 + y3 is 0.

Step 1
According to the question,
100C - 300A = 972 -----(1),
400A + 100B = 1728 -----(2)

Step 2
By adding equation (1) and (2), we get:
100C + 400A -300A + 100B = 2700
⇒ 100C + 100A + 100B = 2700
⇒ 100(C + A + B) = 2700
⇒ C + A + B = 2700/100
⇒ A + B + C = 27

Step 1
After 4 hours of burning, both candles have the same length remaining. Let this length be r.

Step 2
The shorter candle can burn fully in a total of 12 hours but has already been lit for 4 hours. Thus its
remaining length r will burn in another 12 - 4 = 8 hours.
Similarly, for the longer candle, the remaining length r will burn in another 8 - 4 = 4 hours.

Step 3
For shorter candle:

Length that burns in 8 hours = r units

r
Length that burns in 12 hours = × 12 units
8
12r
Thus, the original length of the candle = units
8

Similarly, for the larger candle:

Length that burns in 4 hours = r units

r
Length that burns in 8 hours = × 8 units
4
8r
Thus, the original length of the candle = units

(12) Statement I alone is sufficient to answer the problem.

Step 1
Let us draw a diagram for given situation:

Step 2
By applying statement 1 the height of Vandita is 5 feet. Let us assume Archana's height is x.

Step 3
Both of them stand together, so they form same angle with the ground. Therefore, we can use
proportion to find height of the second one.
x 5
=
9 10
5
⇒x= ×9
10
⇒ x = 4.5 feet

Step 4
Therefore, height of Archana is 4.5 feet. Hence, statement 1 alone is sufficient to answer the
problem.

(13) x = p

Step 1
If a line is parallel to the y-axis and is at a distance of p from the x-axis as shown in the figure
below, we observe that the abscissa of all the points on the line is constant and equal to p.

Step 2
This means that the equation of this line should be x = p.

(14) b. 2.9

Step 1
We know both and are irrational numbers, as they are not perfect squares.

Step 2
The product of the two is also irrational, as is their average.

Step 3
The approximate value of is 2.23, and the approximate value of is 3.74. This rules out
3.8.

Step 4
So, out of the 4 choices, we are only left with 2.9.

(15) a. π

Step 1
Irrational Number: A real number that can not be written as a simple fraction.

Decimal numbers which are either terminating or repeating can be written as fraction and
are not irrational,
e.g.   1.23 = 123/100,     1.33333333.... = 4/3
On the other hand numbers, which are neither terminating nor repeating cannot be written
as fraction and are irrational numbers.
.e.g.   π = 3.141592654..... ,     √2 = 1.4142135623....

Step 2
Now, if we look at the all options, we notice that π can not be written as a simple fraction and
hence π is an irrational number.
