Sub-Spec 027 – DP Master DS, MT and High Torque

PAC
Revision 0
Number:
Effectivity Date: 08/07/2015
Rev Date Description Change Note

These connections are double shouldered designs incorporating an API thread. A secondary shoulder on
the nose of the pin/back of the box offers an additional torque shoulder and mechanical stop. The primary
external shoulder serves as the connection’s sealing surface.

Note: This procedures for field inspection must be read in conjunction with the latest edi-
tion of the relevant DP Master "Field Inspection Procedure". Where there are any conflicts
regarding visual inspection, the requirements of this NS-2™ shall take precedence. Where there
are any conflicts with connection dimensional measurement, the requirements of the latest DP
Master Field Inspection Dimension Drawing shall take precedence.

Visual Inspection
Visual inspection shall be performed in accordance with Sub-Spec 003 with the following additions:

1. Primary Shoulder (Seal) – The seal face on the primary make-up shoulder shall be visually inspected
for evidence of galling, corrosion or any other damage that may limit the sealing capability of the
connection.

(a) Galled or Pitted Seal Areas or Torque Shoulders – Any galling or pitting of the primary seal
surface of DPM-DS™, DPM-MT™ or DPM-High Torque™ connections that exceeds 0.79 mm (1 /32
inch) in depth or occupies 25% or more of the seal width at any given location of the circumfer-
ence is cause for rejection. Shoulders that are not flat around their circumference and across their
width are also cause for rejection.

2. Secondary Shoulder (Mechanical Stop) – The secondary shoulder is a mechanical stop not a seal. The
pin nose shall be visually inspected for any raised metal or other imperfections that could prevent
proper make-up or cause galling. Metal loss due to fluid erosion shall be rejected.

(a) The secondary shoulders shall be free from any raised metal or other imperfections that could
prevent proper make-up or cause galling. Light corrosion and indentations without protrusion are
acceptable. Pin nose damage may be repaired with a hand file, provided it does not affect the
connection length.

3. Thread Surface – The thread surfaces shall be visually inspected for evidence of galling or corrosion.
The thread profile shall be checked with a thread profile gauge for the equivalent API connection.

(a) Galled or Pitted Thread Surfaces – Any galling of threads which cannot be repaired by a hand
file is cause for rejection. After any thread repair the thread profile shall be checked with a field
profile gauge. The gauge shall conform to the thread profile so that no light is visible.

(b) Visible gaps estimated to be no greater than 1.59 mm (1 /16 inch) on no more than three thread
crests are acceptable. Pin Lead measurements shall be required on connections where visible gaps
are evident on the thread flanks. Thread Roots shall be free from corrosion pits that exceed 0.79
mm (1 /32 inch) in depth or 0.79 mm (1 /32 inch) in diameter or occupy more than 38.1 mm (1 1/2
inches) in thread length along any thread helix.

(c) Stretched Threads – Where there is excessive play/movement or visible gaps, lead measurements
shall be taken. Lead measurements exceeding 0.152 mm (0.006 inch) from nominal over a 50.8
mm (2 inches) gauge length are cause for rejection.

4. Swollen Boxes – Outside diameter swell of the box more than 0.79 mm (1 /32 inch) over the nominal
(for that piece) or of the counterbore diameter (excluding any inside bevel) over the manufacturing
tolerances is cause for rejection. Excessive rock as indicated by placing a straight edge across the crest
of the box threads is also cause for rejection.

5. The box counterbore shall also be free from any damage that would inhibit make-up.

Dimensional Measurements
Dimensional measurements shall be taken in accordance with Sub-Spec 003. In addition, the following
measurements shall be taken.

1. Pin Length – The pin length shall be checked at two locations, 180 degrees apart, using a depth
micrometer or vernier for the correct measurement between the primary shoulder and the secondary
shoulder, and shall be recorded on the inspection report.

2. Box Counterbore Wall thickness – The wall counterbore thickness between the box OD and the box
counterbore diameter shall be measured and recorded on the inspection report.

3. Box Depth – The box depth shall be checked at two locations, 180 degrees apart, using a depth microm-
eter or vernier for the correct measurement between the primary shoulder and the secondary shoulder,
and shall be recorded on the inspection report.

4. Pin Nose Diameter – The pin nose diameter shall be measured using a calibrated micrometer or vernier.
This dimension is not used to determine acceptance or rejection but to check for pin nose swell. Where
pin nose diameter swell is detected particular care should be given to measurement of connection length.

(a) Pin & Box Connection Lengths – The distance from the primary sealing shoulder to the secondary
make-up/torque shoulders shall be as per the dimensions stated in Table 27a, Table 27b, and Ta-
ble 27c .

Dimensions outwith those stated are cause for rejection.

(b) Pin Connection Internal Diameter – The ID of the pin connection shall not exceed the dimensions
specified in Table 27a, Table 27b, and Table 27c and shall be free from imperfections that exceed
1.59 mm (1 /16 inch) in depth or 3.18 mm (1/8 inch) in diameter.

(c) Box Counterbore Wall Thickness – The wall thickness between the box outside diameter and the
box counterbore diameter shall exceed the minimum dimensions stated in Table 27a, Table 27b,
