Rizal law and the Catholic Hierarchy

 Roman Catholic Church

 The greatest legacy of the Spaniards in the Philippines
 The power during the Spanish period.

 Rizal’s initial hostility toward the friars notwithstanding, he kept traces of his
childhood faith amid his spiritual crises.

 During the 1955 Senate election, the church charged Recto with being a

communist and an anti-Catholic. After Recto's election, the Church continued
to oppose the bill mandating the reading of Rizal's novels Noli Me Tángere and
El Filibusterismo, claiming it would violate freedom of conscience and religion.

 The catholic church assailed the Rizal bill as a nti-church beacuse it forces the
students to read rizal’s works which contains passages taht were anti-Church.

 Groups such as Catholic Action of the Philippines, the Congregation of the

Mission, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Teachers Guild
organized opposition to the bill and they were countered by Veteranos de la
Revolucion (Spirit of 1896), Alagad in Rizal, the Freemasons, and the Knights
of Rizal.

 Seminars were held across the countryside to oppose the bill.

 Priest attended and actively participated in the hearing of the Senate.
