GIVING A PRESENTATION
NAME:Julisa Bejarano
DATE:23, July 2020

1. Make a list of three things speakers need to do to make a presentation successful. What three things
should speakers not do? CHOOSE.
make it interesting; keep on the subject; be boring; illustrate points; be repetitive; be clear and
organized; wander off the subject; be too obscure; go on too long; introduce the topic at the
beginning and sum it up at the end; be disorganized; speak clearly; use too many complicated
visuals; keep to the time allowed; ignore their audience; be well prepared; take their audience
into account; mumble or speak very quietly
Speakers should:
 Interact with the public
 Consider yourself one more in the audience
 Use slides
 Maintain eye contact

Speakers should not:

 Do not move your hands without any purpose
 Don't panic if we make a mistake
 Do not use words out of context.
2. Listen to a short presentation. What is the speaker talking about? What questions would you like to ask
her? (Audio 2.36)

It´s about the three main reasons for immigration and why we have a reponsabiity to help
immigrants
3. Listen again and answer the questions. (Audio 2.36)
1. What are the three main reasons for emigration?
The first reason is poverty and lack of work and the…………desire…………….for a better life, the second is
religious and political freedom and the third is conflict and war
2. Which group of people should we concentrate on most?
We should concentrate on the refuges escaping war and conflict.
3. How would you summarize the presentation in no more than two sentences?
Migrants leave their countries of origin to give their children a better quality of life.
Many people migrate because their home countries are at war and cannot live in peace with their family.
4. Do you agree with the speaker? Why? / Why not?
If, I agree with the speaker, we must be humanitarian and try to help the migrants who are in our homeless
countries.
4. Complete the sentences with these phrases from the presentation.

1. I´m heading to the big city to find work

2. I want to build a future for myself.
3. it is only natural to want to succeed.
4. I´m in desperate need of a place to stay.

5. Listen again. Identify language in the presentation for each of these areas (Audio 2.36)

Greeting Good afternoon, everyone

Thanking and thank you for coming.

Introducing the topic My presentation today is about the reasons

for emigration and about why we have a
responsibility to help immigrants to our
country.

Giving an overview of the content There are many reasons why people leave
their homes and move to other countries
and in this short talk, I will outline three of
them:

Sequencing the desire for a better life, political or

religious freedom, and, finally, conflict and
war.
Concluding And so in this short presentation I suggest
deepening efforts to help these people.

Asking for questions I’d be happy to answer questions.

6. Listen to the extract from the beginning of the presentation. When does the speaker pause most? Why
does she pause like that? (Audio 2.37)
The biggest pause is
a) For a new paragraph
The size of the other pauses are, in descending order,
b) For a full stop
c)For a Colon, and
d)For a comma
7. Prepare a short presentation about one of these topics.

Good morning with everyone, I will tell you about a beautiful city, the city of Riobamba better known as the
beautiful city, the only city where flora and fauna reserves are found and surrounded by snow-capped
mountains, where you can see the beautiful vicuñas.
This beautiful city is ideal for nature activities such as mountaineering, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking,
among others, it is also a good option to visit with family or friends during Ecuador holidays or any other date.
