This edition of Metálica could not begin without highlighting the prestigious title
of Doctor Honoris Causa attributed by the University of Liége to Professor Luís
Simões da Silva, president of CMM. A distinction that awards the important work
he has done in the scientific and technological development of the area of steel
and composite structures. Also noteworthy is the news of Professor Paulo Vila
Real, vice-president of CMM, chairing the working group for the development of
the second generation of Part 1.2 of Eurocode 3.

The technical article presents a study on the fire behavior of cold formed steel
walls with composite panels made of plaster and cork. The work included
experimental tests and numerical simulations focusing on the determination of the
thermal insulation and structural resistance provided by the walls.

The articles of opinion of this edition are dedicated to the rehabilitation of a building
using a steel structure, the storage and handling of welding consumables and

The University of Liège

The University of Liège does not have a “long” history, compared to other European universities. It was founded
only in 1817 on the initiative of King William I of the Netherlands as the culmination of a long intellectual tradition
dating back to the origins of the Principality of Liège. The reputation of the medieval schools, which gave rise to
the University, gave Liège the nickname “Athens of the North” or “New Athens”.

The University of Liège has awarded the title of doctor honoris causa to various personalities as recognition of the
excellence of the quality of work and a fundamental contribution to the progress of society. Since its foundation,
the University of Liège has awarded the honorary doctorate award to more than 550 public personalities including
Louis Pasteur, Ilya Prigogine, Umberto Eco, King Baudouin, Frederico Mayor, François Mitterrand, Nelson
Mandela, Jasser Arafat and Shimon Peres, Helmut Kohl, Robert Badinter, SM King Albert II, Nancy Huston, Pierre
Alechinsky, Agnès Varda, Abdou Diouf, Frank De Winne, Matthieu Ricard, Pierre Rabhi and Erik Orsenna. The title
was also awarded to associations such as Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, and the World Wide
Fund for Nature.

The set of various interventions by Francisco

singular work distinguished by its originality with
the definition of an autonomous and proper path.
The approach to spaces, by the architects, attributes
a very sculptural character to the work, allowing to
detect a methodology based on the definition of
voids, originating from a subtraction of matter. This
course, with national and international recognition
among its peers, was very recently confirmed by a
distinguished jury that conferred the Pessoa Award Figure 1. View of the facade of the College and the Church of the

The structure of the Passage Bridge is composed of a

stayed steel structural system with large spans, with
approximately 1,750 tons of steel (USI-SAC-350), with
welded connections, and 8 thousand cubic meters
of concrete and 1,800 tons of steel bars [18]. The
company Usiminas Mecânica was responsible for all
stages of execution of the work from environmental
licensing and deep foundations to civil construction
[18]. All the steel Passage Bridge structures were
manufactured in the State of Minas Gerais and
transported to the construction site, where they were
pre-assembled and launched at the site, with the help
of a 500-ton crane and a 100-meter boom reach [18] .
The unit weight of each steell tower is approximately
65 tonnes (Figure 5a) and 85 tonnes for each rope
anchorage box (Figure 5b) [18].

To promote the innovation regarding the segment of

stay-cable bridges, the Passage Bridge is the first bridge
built with the use of steel (and not concrete) towers,

training courses and events

CMM Technical Training on Steel Construction

CMM started its training plan for 2018 in the area of Steel and
Composite Construction.

The trainers of this course were Professor Dinar

Camotim and Professor Nuno Silvestre, both from
Instituto Superior Técnico, Eng. António Santos from
Gestedi and Eng. Filipe Santos from Vesam. This course
was attended by 17 trainees.

On 22, 23 and 24 March the course “Design of Steel

Structures” – 5th edition took place in Lisbon and the
coordinator of this course is Eng. Tiago Abecasis.

On 9 and 10 March, the course “Design of Structures

in” Light Steel “was held at the iParque in Coimbra.
This course was coordinated by Professor Nuno
Silvestre from IST.

This course aimed to: Provide knowledge on the

design of “light steel” structures and present in detail
the standard EN 1993-1-3; Understand EN 1993-1-3

Based on activated zinc technology, our patented Hempadur Avantguard coatings have been proven to deliver superior corrosion protection compared
to key competitor zinc rich epoxy primers. This superiority has been independently proven by third party laboratory neutral salt spray tests according
to ISO 9227. In this test, steel protected with Avantguard produced a lower evolution of rust creep than the competitors, assessed according to ISO 12944-6,
when tested up to 3x the duration for C5-high environments. Avantguard’s overcoating interval is a minimum of 33 percent faster than competitor zinc-rich
epoxies when comparing product data sheets.
