1. To complete this course, you are advised to read the study units in the course manual, as

for further reading and those at the reference section, (and watch the recommended
videos, when applicable).

specifically for this course. At specific points in the course, you will be required to
submit your assignment notebook for assessment purposes.
3. You should do all the self-assessment exercises, either alone or in a group chat with your
course mates.
4. There will be three written exams before the finals: Preliminary, midterm and semifinal
exam. You will submit your answers either online or personally to your teacher.
5. At the end of the course, there is a final examination, written and oral. The written exam
will be done at home. The oral exam may be via teleconference, in a group with other
students or alone, via video chat or face- to- face with your teacher.
6. You have to allocate your time to each unit in order to complete the course successfully
and on time.
7. Whenever you need to, do not hesitate to consult your teacher, who will be available
online at the scheduled time for this course, or through cellphone.
8. Do all the tutor-marked assignments, answer and submit them to your teacher on demand.

THE COURSE
Study Units
The course has two parts namely: Part I- The Historical Background of Philippine
Literature and Part II-Representative Composition Through the Years. Each part is further
divided into units and chapters that expand on topics related to the main theme of the course.
Next, these topics are listed followed by discussions on them. There are self-assessment
exercises, which you have to answer in a notebook specifically for this course, and tutor –
marked assignments in between modules and you should be able to do them as the discussions go
on. Each assignment provides practice for you in developing the sequential components of the
course. Your answers are supposed to be relevant and short.
Teacher and Tutorials/Consultation
Tutorials/consultations are provided in support of this course. You may get in touch with
your teacher online (for online students) or by cellphone or appointment (for distance education
students). You will be assigned in a group chat or tutorial group.
Your teacher will mark and comment on your assignments, keep a close watch on your
progress and on any difficulties, you might encounter, as well as provide assistance to you during
the course. You must submit your tutor- marked assignments well before the due date to your
teacher, who will mark and return them to you as soon as possible.
Do not hesitate to contact your teacher if you do not understand any part of the study
units or the assigned readings; if you have difficulty with the self -assessment exercises; or if you
have a question or a problem with an assignment, his/her comments on an assignment or with the
grading of an assignment.
You should try your best to make use of the tutorials. This is the only chance to have
face to face contact with your teacher and ask questions which are answered instantly. You can
raise any problem encountered in the course of your study. To gain the maximum benefit from
course tutorials prepare a question list before attending them.

ASSESSMENT
There is a self-assessment exercise at the end of every unit and a tutor-marked
assignment at the end of every module. You are required to attempt all the exercises and
assignments, write the answers in your notebook and submit the notebook to your teacher on
demand. The work that you submit to your teacher for assessment will count for 10% of your
total course mark.

FINAL EXAMINATION AND GRADING

The final examination will have a written and oral part and will carry 40% of the total
course grade. The written exam (10 %) may be done at home but the oral exam (30%) will be
done face to face with the teacher or via teleconference or video chat. The examination will
consist of questions which will reflect everything you have learnt about Philippine Literature in
English. You should use the time between finishing the last module and taking the examination
to revise the entire course. You may find it useful to review your self- assessment exercises and
tutor marked assignments before the examination.
FINAL PROJECT
At the end of the course, you will be required to submit a project (20%): Create an
interactive and creative literary video lesson of a specific Philippine literary work written in
English.

COURSE MARKING SCHEME

The following table lays out how the actual course marking is broken down.

Assessment Marks

Assignments (written in the notebook) 10%

Prelims 10%

Midterm 10%

Semifinals 10%

Final examination

Written 10%

Oral 30%

Course Project 20 %

Total 100% of course marks

With this marking scheme, there will be an assurance that the student’s final grade will be
fair and objective because it is based largely on the oral examination where they demonstrate
what they have really learned from the course.

Perhaps, he got help in doing the written examinations and the course project, which the
instructor/ instructress actually encourages because in doing so they learn a lot, but all in all,
even if they do all the written works perfectly, they can only get a maximum of 70% for the
finals.

It is the oral examination that determines if they will pass or not because it carries the remaining
30% they need to complete their final grade. They should be very well prepared and do their best
to be able to pass it.
