Causticum.
A clear liquid, distilled from a mixture of Caustic Lime and bisulphate of
Potash (See Hahnemann's direction for preparing it), is mixed with an equal
part of Alcohol. Chemically and pathogenetically it is doubtless a solution of
Potassium hydrate.
General Effects :- º The general key to the action of Causticum is the same
as that to all the Potashes, namely, paralysis, slow pulse, low temperature,
etc. º Diuresis is a general concomitant.
Allies :- º Kali in general, Rhus t., Zinc., Sulph., Sep., etc.
Generalities :- º Spasm, when slumbering in evening he felt that he could
not move the tongue well, rose, cried out, but fell back again, stretched arms
and legs, then moved them, eyes were distorted, gnashed his teeth, saliva
flowed from mouth, with icy coldness, consciousness returned after half an
hour, with anxiety, transient thoughts, lolling tongue, all amel. a swallow of
cold water. º Spasm, in morning in bed heat, after rising cold sensation in the
arm in which he had at first a jerk, with twitchings in upper part of body, in
trunk and in arms, with full consciousness but with apprehension. º Spasm in
evening, vertigo as if turning involuntarily hither and thither, amel. open air,
with apprehension, stupid expression of face and heat over whole body.
º Falling suddenly without consciousness while walking in open air, but
immediately rising again. º Twitching here and there ; T. in right side of
body and in various other parts of skin. º Starting up frequently at night. º
Trembling ; in morning on waking ; after supper, with apprehension ;
anxious T. in morning and forenoon, with sleepy confusion of head, heavy
pressure in occiput and forehead, with heaviness of limbs, pain in joints and
muscles of fingers, arms, shoulder knees and feet.
º Sticking in nearly all parts ; now here, now there (after menstruation) ; or
contractive pain. º Tearings, especially in joints, or from them through
various bones, sometimes in several at once. º Pinching here and there ; and
in various parts of skin. º Drawing pain, especially above knees. º Drawings
in several parts, increasing to tearings. º Soreness as if bruised or pressed in
the side, hip and thigh on which he lay at night, with frequent necessity to
turn over. º Bruised pain in every part when touched (Arn.) ; general B. pain
when sitting, amel. working and in open air, especially in arms ; B. feeling
evening in bed, with burning pain ; boring knifelike, externally behind left,
with sudden general sweat ; paroxysmal, in right ; intermittent, in right
mastoid process ; tearing, with roaring, as from a storm of wind.
º Tearing in left ; beneath left at 4 P.M. ; in drum, with tensive confusion of
head. º Sensation as if everything were dragging outward and as if they
would burst, like a tearing mingled with itching. º Twinging. º Boring in
right ; in fossa below right, then on pressure bruised pain ; behind left at one
time, at another pulsating-throbbing. º Pain in mastoid process ; in right
meatus in evening ; in meatus on cleaning, as if sore and ulcerated.
º Sensation internally of jerking outward. º Tension behind. º Sensation of
contraction in left and in whole side of head in evening when lying, with
inability to sleep upon that side, and when touched (but amel. pressure)
sensation as if flesh had been separated from bone. º Crawling in left, with
itching-biting. º Itching in left ; stickling, in front of right meatus. º
Sensation as if cold wind were blowing into right meatus. º Air rushes in
during eructations. º Stopped sensation mornings ; S. sensation in right.
º º Re-echoing of her own words and steps ; of sounds, with difficult
hearing ; every morning. º Roaring before E. ; in right ; in each alternately
in evening before sleep. º Rushing sound as of a waterfall, with difficult
hearing. º Thundering tones in right. º Ringing in left ; in front of right in
evening. º Singing as of distant crickets, then throbbing, then singing again. º
Whistling in left.
Clinical :- º Chronic inflammation of the middle ear. º Buzzing, roaring
in ears, with re-echoing of sounds (in Meniere's disease), (Compare with
Nat. sul.). º Burning heat of ears after a frost-bite and rheumatism. º
Unnatural accumulation of wax in ears.
Mouth :- º
Teeth :- º Looseness of some ; of incisors ; painful L. of incisors. º Stitches ;
on biting on them ; on opening mouth ; in upper back, extending upward ; in
lower back, extending downward. º Tearing in diseased root of a left lower ;
T. in last left upper back, at 2 P.M., agg. open air ; in both right rows,
extending into zygoma, with bruised pain in both right jaws on pressure and
on chewing ; extending into head and left eye ; in all in forenoon, as if they
would fall out ; intermittent, in roots of lower in morning. º Boring in a
lower molar, extending to nose and eyes. º Prickling-digging in lower
back, extending to ear. º Pain ; with much spitting of saliva ; in a right back ;
in a sound one on drawing in cold air ; consisting of pressing-tearing and
sticking combines, with erysipelatous swelling of cheek and a swollen
suppurating pimple on gum ; jerking ; throbbing, with painful gum, so that
he could not chew ; throbbing, in a diseased back T. º Toothache as if
ulcerating, at night and during the day when she moves the mouth. º Pain as
if sore, in morning, then throbbing, the pain amel. bleeding of gum. º
Drawing toothache ; in left lower, from articulation to chin, in afternoon ;
with itching between teeth ; in right second molar, more in external surface,
and extending into temples. º Burning pain in hollow T. while eating and
drinking. º Pressure from without in roots of both anterior upper molars. º
Sensitiveness to touch ; S. of T. and gums in morning. º Peculiar sensation in
roots, so that he must gnash the teeth.
Gums :- º º Swelling ; in front and behind, with pain ; of left side, with
sensitiveness while eating and with spasmodic pain in evening ; with
excoriation of pudenda on urinating. º Bleeding. º Drawing pain in lower. º
Sensitiveness without pain in teeth.
Tongue :- º Vesicles on margin ; painful V. ; painful on tip. º T. and back
part of mouth threw off a thick and tough membrane. º Sore pain on and
beneath T. and on palate. º Pain on left side as if bitten. º Pain as if burnt on
tip and margin. º Scraping, then roughness of mouth as if covered with a
skin ; burning S. on tip, as if burnt, with salivation and burnt taste. º Burning
on tip. º Dryness, with thirst.
º º Epidermal coating of mouth and fauces abraded ; in morning, but partly
hanging in large pieces, the mucous membrane itself swollen and loose,
tongue scarlet, papillæ swollen, arch of palate and uvula swollen and dark
red, in mouth and fauces sensation of glowing coals, with constant pressure
to swallow and hawk, which increased the pain, discharge of much saliva
and mucus, voice hoarse and nasal, disposition bordering on desperation,
with febrile symptoms, rapid pulse and unquenchable thirst.
º º Sore, painful spot on hard palate. º Swelling of inside of cheek, which he
bites when chewing. º Mouth open at night, causing dryness. º Stitches in
left side of palate. º Pain in mouth, œsophagus and epigastric region ;
anteriorly on palate, as if suppurating, when touched with tongue. º Burning
scraping. º Burning on palate, with soreness. º Crawling posteriorly on
palate, with burning pricking. º Dryness at night ; all forenoon, without
thirst ; and on lips, without thirst ; with thirst ; burning. º Salivation ; when
walking after eating, with moisture in nose ; rancid ; watery, in forenoon,
with nausea.
º Taste of food remains long after eating ; T. for food diminished. º Fatty. º
Bitter. º Offensive ; afternoons, as from a disordered stomach. º Viscid,
glutinous.
Clinical :- º Violent toothache from taking cold, even in sound teeth,
from cold air. º Painful looseness and elongation of teeth. º Gums bleed
easily, and are swollen. º Dental fistula.
attempts at micturition, after passing a few drops pain in bladder and (after
much walking in order to relieve it) cramps in rectum.
Urine :- º Copious ; then scanty ; and slightly acid. º Scanty, with great
thirst. º Often dark brown. º Turbid on standing. º Reddish. º Clear, like
water. º Containing much tenacious mucus.
Clinical :- º Weakness of bladder. º Paralysis of bladder, the urine is
expelled very slowly and sometimes is even retained. º Weakness of the
sphincter of bladder, especially in children, the urine passes involuntarily,
especially during the first sleep at night, also involuntary from the
slightest excitement during the day. º Paralysis of bladder after labor, the
urine is retained.

º Cough in forenoon, with rawness in throat ; C. in forenoon, with rattling on
every inspiration as from mucus in right side of chest ; wakes her in evening
and morning, amel. during the day ; only at night ; every night at 2 A.M.,
amel. during the day, with much expectoration ; always caused by
speaking ; caused by crawling in larynx or by stooping to pick up anything ;
caused by incessant crawling ; on becoming warm after being cold ; agg.
after eating, with expectoration of mucus. º Tickling cough. º Paroxysmal C.,
caused by tickling of mucus in throat. º Violent C., even at night ; at times
dry, with pain in right side of abdomen. º Hollow C., agg. night and
morning, with adherent mucus in chest, in which there is sticking, soreness
and ulceration, with and without coughing, with stopped coryza. º Dry
hollow C., in paroxysms, with a sore streak down trachea, where it pains
on every paroxysm of cough and almost prevents breathing. º Dry cough at
night, disturbing sleep ; C., with scraping in throat, without expectoration ;
causing burning in chest ; racking, in morning on waking and preventing
him from sleeping again. º Hacking C., with difficult breathing ; dry H.
cough and only seldom some expectoration of mucus. º Hoarse C., agg.
morning and evening, amel. night. º Irritation to cough, even in morning in
bed ; I., with every expiration. º Expectoration of tough mucus, at first
difficult, then easy to loosen.
º Suffocation in attacks during inspiration while sitting, as if some one
grasped the trachea. º Arrest of breath while speaking or walking rapidly,
with necessity to suddenly catch for breath ; sudden A. when hunting, with
rapid palpitation, necessity to kneel, general sweat, shortness of breath, rush
of blood to head, bluish-red color of face, as if he would have apoplexy. º
Want of breath, with weakness of thighs. º Dyspnœa after lying down ; agg.
sitting ; spasmodic. º Inspiration difficult and deep. º Short breath in
morning, with pain in abdomen ; S. when walking in open air ; with
oppression of chest ; then paroxysms of cough.
Clinical :- º Acute laryngitis, loss of voice and rawness and soreness in
larynx and trachea (Bell. and Benzoin.). º Sudden aphonia after taking
cold. º Paralysis of vocal cords. º Loss of voice in singers and speakers. º
Cough, agg. warmth of bed, amel. sips of cold water. º Cough, with
sensation as if he "could not get under the mucus" to raise it. º Constant
hacking cough, with involuntary micturition. º Expectoration as a rule
scanty, must be swallowed, excessive rawness in chest on coughing,
especially under sternum.
Upper Extremities :- º
Axilla :- º Glands swollen. º Stitches near, extending towards breast.
Shoulder :- º Stitches on top ; in left ; tearing, in right, extending into hands.
º Tearing in joint of left ; in right at 6 P.M. if she moves right arm or turns
head to right, with bruised pain on inner border of right scapula, but if she
turns to the left the place feels tense. º Pressure upon. º Pain on moving right
arm ; in left as if dislocated, from morning till evening ; in joint and in
elbow as if asleep, at night, waking her frequently, agg. morning after
waking ; paralytic, in left. º Goutlike drawings here and there, agg. motion,
and in elbow and wrist. º Stiffness.
º Heat every day from 6 to 8 P.M. ; H. causing late falling asleep in evening ;
after a short walk in open air, with excitement ; general, without moisture
and without thirst, then gradual coolness, with yawning and stretching of
arms. º H. in flushes after walking, with discomfort. º Orgasm of blood. º
Burning wherever she takes hold of herself ; B. in vertex ; in right temple
and side of forehead ; on right malar-bone in evening ; in middle of right
scapula ; on outer surface of left upper arm ; transversely across forearm,
close to wrist ; in finger-tips ; in soles ; in a spot on right side of neck, with
redness. º Heat in face after eating, and in eyes ; in face after eating, with
redness. º Internal H. in head after dinner ; I. heat in head without external
heat ; in forehead and back, as if sweat would break out ; sudden, in left
thigh. º Sticking-burning in axilla. º Tearing burning in scalp in front of
vertex in evening. º Cool burning on malar-bone ; frequently in front of
vertex. º Crawling B. in ball of great toe.
º Sweat ; in morning in bed ; waking him at 4 A.M. ; in afternoon when
walking, with weariness ; at night ; every night ; at night, with uneasy
sleep ; profuse, when walking in open air ; in attacks ; general sour, at
night ; on back and abdomen after walking.
Main
