Background Information for Learners
What is all about Contemporary Art?
 Contemporary Art is the art of today, produced by artists who are living in the 21 st century. It provides an opportunity to
reflect on contemporary society and the issues relevant to ourselves and to the world around us. It pertains on about life,
thoughts, ideas beliefs and many other things that define human life.
 It is a type of art that follows no pattern or rule.
 The styles and ways of art-making are very different from the traditional ways
 The scope of contemporary art is broad, as there are over 100 art styles and movements under its category.

Facts regarding Contemporary Arts


 Contemporary artists did not feel obliged to apply perspective, color combination, naturalism, and other guidelines that
were carefully observed in traditional art.
 Contemporary art is not confined with the museum. They can also be found in galleries, art schools, side streets, and
public spaces like the train or bus stations, shopping centers or parks.
 The artist has experimented on a variety of techniques and different ways of expressing their emotion, perceptions,
convictions, ideas, and ideology. The way artists do their craft has change through time (transforms made through
slippers, pen holders through shifted metals, etc.)
 It is not confined to images of human being. What is essential to contemporary artist is the process of art-making
 Many contemporary artists are self-taught and did not have formal education
 Access to different kinds of materials that were originally used only for construction has expanded the choice of artists
 Technological intervention has been of great help for people who only use creativity and imagination to conquer the
world of artistry
 Contemporary Art is a statement that an artist makes about life, thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and many other things that define
human life

Characteristics of Contemporary Art


 Integrative- it pertains to the artists that is free to integrate any medium and any form or style in order to express their
artistic intention
 Processed- based- it emphasizes on how the artist starts not with a final product in mid, but instead begins the
development of a concept and then subsequently proceeds with realizing the idea
 Site-Specific- allows an artwork meaning to have a direct relationship to a specific location where it is seen or
experience. It is an art form that is performed and positioned in a specific space such public places
 Collaborative- it is an art that the end product is created with the involvement of two or more artists
 Interactive- it recognizes how the audience has the potential to change or add the meaning of an artwork
 Mixed-Media- it is the technique that uses different materials in the creation of an artwork
 Performance- is an art form where the artist executes an artwork in front of a live audience
 Hybridity- is a usage of unconventional materials, mixing of unlikely materials to produce an artwork
 Appropriation- is an existing artwork that are appropriated to produce another artwork
 Technology- uses Video Phenomenon from MTV to YouTube, recording performances, video posting, sharing and live
streaming

PHILIPPINE ARTS HISTORY


Pre-Colonial Arts (Ethnic Arts) In Pre-colonial Philippines, arts are for ritual purposes or for everyday use.
Islamic Arts Islamic art is characterized by geometric designs and patterns eliciting focus from the
believers.
Spanish Era Art became a handmaiden of religion, serving to propagate the Catholic faith and thus
support the colonial order at the same time.
American Era In the American regime, commercial and advertising arts were integrated into the fine arts
curriculum. Moreover, Americans favored idyllic sceneries and secular forms of arts.
Japanese Era Since the Japanese advocated for the culture of East Asia, preference was given to the
indigenous art and traditions of the Philippines. This emphasized their propaganda of Asia
belonging to Asians.
Modern Era Modern era in Philippine Art began after World War 2 and the granting of Independence.
Writers and artists posed the question of national identity as the main theme of various art
forms.
Contemporary Art Philippine Contemporary Art was an offshoot of social realism brought about by Martial
Law. Arts became expression of people’s aspiration for a just, free, and sovereign society.
