Example 1
Determine nominal plate thickness of shell with following requirements:
- Material SA 516 Gr.70
- Design internal pressure 1.2 MPa
- Design temperature 150 degC
- Inside diameter 500 mm

Example 2
Determine nominal pipe thickness of shell with following requirements:
- Material SA 106 Gr.B
- Design internal pressure 1.2 MPa
- Design temperature 150 degC
- NPS 20”
Corrosion Allowance, Joint Efficiency, and tolerance have to be considered
Corrosion Allowance
• It depends on material, service, and lifetime
• In general, for carbon steel material uses 3 mm (0.125”) corrosion allowance
• Alloy materials are not required to have corrosion allowance
• Tubes, bolting, non-pressure part are not required to have corrosion
allowance
• Corrosion allowance is commonly determined by regulation, user, or
equipment standard. Ex: API, TEMA, user specification, and others
Joint efficiency
• It depends on three things (UW-12)
• Raw material (seamless or welded)
• Joint (butt, fillet, groove, corner)
• Radiography (full, spot, none)
• In general, E is 1, 0.85, and 0.7 for full, spot, and none, respectively
• Application in part of vessel: shell, head, nozzle, fittings
• Application in joint of vessel: shell-head, head-nozzle, shell-nozzle, nozzle-flange, nozzle-fitting

Tolerance
• It depends on raw material and fabrication process
• Raw material thickness tolerance (ASME Sec.IIA and Sec.VIII Div.1)
• Plates: smaller of 0.3 mm or 6% of nominal thickness
• Pipes: 12.5% of nominal thickness
• Tubes: 12.5% of nominal thickness
• Fabrication process
• Forming: maximum 10% of nominal thickness
• Machining: 0.05 to 1 mm
