Cambridge International AS & A Level Global Perspectives & Research

Introduction
This Teacher’s Resource accompanies the Cambridge International AS & A Level Global Perspectives
& Research Coursebook. Each chapter contains suggested approaches to teaching Cambridge
International AS & A Level Global Perspectives & Research and provides downloadable resources for
you to use in conjunction with Coursebook activities.

Using this Teacher’s Resource with the Coursebook

The Coursebook is divided into nine chapters. The Teacher’s Resource follows the structure of the
book and provides resources to accompany each of these chapters.
Each chapter of the Teacher’s Resource is set out in a common format and includes the following:
• a learning objectives checklist for students
• sample lesson plans (one for each section of the book, except for the practice sections)
• suggested teaching approaches and answers to activities
• summary questions and possible answers.

Learning objectives checklist for students

The learning objectives for each chapter are set out at the beginning of each chapter in the
Coursebook. Teachers can give students the checklist in this Teacher’s Resource to put into their
Global Perspectives & Research student folder. They can then complete the checklist as and when
they feel that they have achieved each learning objective, checking the ‘Self’ box and asking their
partner to assess their achievement of the learning objective by checking the ‘Peer’ box. If you
photocopy and give each student a copy of each checklist with the guidelines at the start of each
chapter, students can see what they are aiming to achieve by the end of the chapter.

Sample lesson plans

Each chapter gives at least one sample lesson plan for each section that you can use or adapt for
your Global Perspectives & Research lessons. You will need to design lessons for the rest of the
section. Your own lesson plans can be written along the same lines as the samples.

Suggested teaching approaches and answers to activities

The Coursebook gives students guidance towards the completion of activities but does not replace
teacher input. It is up to you as the teacher to decide how to use the content of the Coursebook.
Some concepts might need more teacher input than others, and part of the teacher’s role is to
manage class activity and the degree to which students work independently. Suggested approaches
are given for some activities. For the activities within the Coursebook without suggested answers,
some are given in this Teacher’s Resource. However, often there is no correct answer, and discussion
about possible answers is necessary.

Summary questions and possible answers

The aim of the summary questions at the end of most chapters is formative assessment. Students
can answer the questions once they have completed the chapter to see where they might need
further practice. You will be able to see which practice section is most suitable for a student to
start with, depending on how well they answer the summary questions. You may want students to
work through all three practice sections, or you may feel that they would be better starting with the
‘establishing’ section if their skills are already quite well developed.
Chapter 1 and Chapter 9 do not have summary questions at the end. This is because each of these
chapters looks at the course as a whole, with Chapter 1 introducing the range of skills which make up
the Critical Path, and Chapter 9 using them to demonstrate the process of researching and writing
for the Cambridge Research Report. In both cases, students complete the task itself over the course
of the chapter, and additional, task-focused summary questions at the end would be redundant.
