TUTORIAL 3:

Sustainability is a process or a state whereby something is reserved for a longer period as long as
it is wanted. My group came up with the simplest definition of Sustainable development which
states that it’s the definition that meets the needs of the current generation without limiting those
of the futures.
Upon our discussion, we tend to dig into the native words for development based on our race.
For the indo-Fijians sustainability is sthirata and for sustainable development it is _______. For
i-taukei language the group agreed with “na vakamareqeti ni noda I-yau bula" and
“veivakatorocaketaki vakayalomatua" respectively. For my friend from the Solomon Islands it is
Va'aeto or eapeki (sustainability) and “paleh va padani toh" (sustainable development)
Our group have discussed that one form of sustainability is the taboo that is usually placed by the
chiefs for instance the one in Macuata that lasts for five years. They mostly hold it for a period
according to its rights. This is in particular same to the rite in Hawaii as being stipulated by
McMillen. In Sigatoka it is the Kula Eco Bird Park has been reserved not only for tourism
industry but for the future generations also, particularly the same goes to Colo-I-Suva rainforests.
For the Nawailevu Bauxite Mining, they have sustainable development goals which is to plant
trees on the land which has been mined for the past five years. One of the group member from
Sigatoka discussed that even the tourism industry have sustainability goal and are practicing
sustainable development. For instance, in the case of Outrigger Beach Resort, they have
implemented the Coral planting program. In the article, it states that TEK fights for the
exploitation of the environment meaning that there is strong laws on the environment. This is
also evident in our community, where there is total ban on turtles and catching of Kawakawa,
once someone is caught, they are charged with a heavy fine. This are some forms of
sustainability. An experienced was brought up by one of the member and it goes where she had a
field trip to Uprising Beach Resort, they have this program of planting mangroves, in which the
number of mangroves planted depending on the nations where the guest cam from. In particular
to Bua, the elders usually reserve a land and say “this belongs to Samu ( who is probably a 2 year
old baby)”. This are forms of sustainable development which had a depth insight for the future.
If we tend to adopt the doing of our ancestors, their farming techniques, fishing techniques,
primitive livelihood and how they utilise the environment than we can regain our environment
with its beauty. They treat the environment fairly for they have connections towards it.
