George Church, Epstein and the pandemic

[NB: Another nerd, we already got Joshca Bach the nerd; nerds can predict pandemics]

‘Bored George Church’ on twitter:

‘Bill Gate is so worried about engineering living things I’m beginning to worry about Bill
Gates’.
‘I mean, if you’re not losing track of CRISPR’d patients in clinical trials, are you really
living?’

Citing ‘nerd tunnel vision,’ biologist George Church apologizes for contacts with Jeffrey
Epstein
George Church, the prominent Harvard University biologist, offered a full-throated
apology for having meetings and phone calls with accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein
even after the financier pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution.
“I certainly apologize for my poor awareness and judgment,” Church told STAT in his
first public comments about Epstein………Expressing regret that he and other scientists
weren’t more cautious in their dealings with Epstein, he said: “There should have been
more conversations about, should we be doing this, should we be helping this guy?
There was just a lot of nerd tunnel vision.”

After the Madness—Pandemic Silver Linings in Bioscience (article quotes George

Church)
On March 16, a single tweet mobilized an army of over 700 geneticists from 36
countries to battle a tiny virus by trying to understand the role human genetics plays in
why some people have no reaction to COVID-19, and others get very sick and die.
“Goal: aggregate genetic and clinical information on individuals affected by COVID-19,”
tweeted Andrea Ganna, a geneticist at the Institute for Molecular Medicine in Helsinki,
Finland…….Or is it possible that somewhere, somehow, a new respect for science and
evidence will emerge out of COVID-19? “There’s kind of a reward system now for
people to pay attention to facts,” said George Church, Professor of Genetics at Harvard
Medical School, “rather than just making stuff up. And that reward is in terms of fewer
relatives and friends and colleagues dying.”

Curiously, Andrea Ganna is also with The Broad Institute:

“There is no ‘gay gene’,” says lead study author Andrea Ganna, a geneticist at the
Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
