- Derived from → Latin word: “ars” = skills
- Measure of a man’s: passions, desires, relations → other men
- Value: “Art gives you a purpose”

 Personal – own opinions
 Individual – generalized opinion

Art Appreciation
 Intellectual – aesthetic qualities; what you see (texture, color)
 Emotional – feelings generated when one sees the art

Art as expression and communication - viewpoint


Art as creation – creates a harmonious atmosphere; helps people
Art as experience

Three major kinds of experience involved in artistic activity


1. An experience that the artist wants to communicate
2. The act of expressing this experience
3. The experience the onlooker or listener undergoes when he perceives the work of art
