MIMO communication

Multiplexing gain
Spatial Modulation
Antenna activation process as a means of conveying information.
If Nt=1 SM-MIMO becomes conventional single antenna transmission where information
bits are encoded onto signal constellation diagram
Rate is now log2(M)
If M=1 SM MIMO becomes SSK. Information bits are encoded only to antenna
constellation. And rate will be log2(Nt)
In SSK data is transmitted through only information driven antenna switching
mechanism.

How SM works:
Means how information encoded onto antenna indices is decoded by the receiver. how
information is retrieved from the antenna indices

Spatial position of antenna adv:

due to different spatial location of antennas they offer different channel
conditions from each other..

Advantages of SM MIMO
Higher throughput
Due to addition of spatial constellation spectral efficiency improves.
Simpler receiver design
Single RF chain required cause single active antenna so no ICI .
Simpler transmitter design
Single active antenna requires single RF chain which is inexpensive to delpoy. no
need for multiple bulky amplifier filter
Lower transmit power supply
Multiplexing gain can be achieved by single RF chain
Historical perspective
2004

channel hopping technique Hoping a signal over different channels ..this

hopping information can be identified by receiver
Exactly similar to what SM is today

2005

ICI avoidance in MIMO transmission using Spatial information ICI is avoided by

activating only one antenna and encoding some information onto spatial dimension
Signal processing complexity reduces at the reciever
Exactly similar to what SM is today
Antenna Selection in SM
Antenna selection criteria
Using CSI at transmitter
Maximizing capacity
Euclidean distance based
Low complexity antenna selection based on PEP
