What we do

Cundall was founded in Newcastle over 40 years ago. From day one,
our goal has always been to work with like-minded clients and project
partners to create and deliver design solutions that exceed expectations.
We are known throughout the industry for our high level of client service,
commitment to continuous professional development and continued
investment in the future.

There is no doubt that our people are Cundall’s strength. Professional

integrity and the commitment of inspired, motivated people are vital to our
success. We like people to get involved, be empowered with responsibility
and be given the space for creativity to develop. We have built our reputation
for pushing boundaries to get the best solutions for our clients by sharing
this dynamic, inclusive approach and enthusiasm with other consultants
and collaborators.

Staff benefits

We have a range of benefit arrangements across the business, which vary

on a country-by-country basis, to reflect local regulations, custom and
practice. What they all have in common is a simple objective - to provide
industry competitive salaries and a great place to work.

Aside from the core benefits that we offer, we also like to think that we are
able to provide good social benefits too. The term ‘all work and no play’
isn’t what we are about; opportunities to socialise with colleagues at team
and office level are readily available, and the Practice supports social
activities through the provision of a ‘social fund’. For instance, you could find
yourself attending one of our popular office yoga-classes, going paintballing,
go-karting, learning a new language or just enjoying some good food at a
BBQ. Our social committee always aims to arrange events that appeal to a
broad spectrum of individuals, so there will always be something to suit you!

“Cundall has given me plenty of trust and

support to broaden my knowledge. Within
6 months, I was already leading design
and responsible for my own projects. The
projects I work on range from small video
wall installations, to large auditoriums and
stadiums, the variety of projects is what
maintains my enthusiasm.”

Training and development

At Cundall, we take the professional development of our people very

seriously. We believe that it is the commitment, talent and motivation of our
people that are key to delivering success, and so as a Practice, we are keen
to ensure that our approach to training and development supports both the
needs of the business and the personal and professional aspirations of our
employees. We see our workforce as an asset and so we believe that we
should invest in that asset.

As well as structured training programmes for those at the beginning

of their careers and wishing to pursue Chartership, we support a range
of in-house and external professional development activities for our
engineering and support staff. We offer a range of training and development
opportunities from technical and skills training through to training leading
to a professional or academic qualification. If you’ve got the potential, we’ll
help you achieve it.
“Cundall is known as the best sustainability
consultancy in Australia and when I was
made aware about an opening to join
Cundall’s Perth team to deliver several
large-scale projects, I didn’t think twice to
hop on the plane from Sydney to Perth.”

Cundall Diploma

Here at Cundall we differentiate ourselves by our emphasis on sustainability

for every project we deliver, as well as the way we operate our own offices.
Our commitment, which is set out in our Sustainability Policy, is that “we
will act to help achieve a world in which people enjoy happy, healthy lives
within their fair share of the earth’s resources, leaving space for wildlife and
wilderness”.

In 2016, we launched a Sustainable Design Training Programme - the

Cundall Diploma - which is the first of its kind across our industry. It’s
designed to upskill and empower our people in sustainable design, giving
participants the technical knowledge, and the confidence to challenge
conventional thinking and to drive Cundall’s success in improving the built
environment.

As the world becomes more aware of sustainability issues, it is important

that we lead from the front and are at the cutting edge of engineering
design and consultancy advice. The Diploma empowers participants to
meet client needs and to improve the health of people and the planet when
designing the built environment.

Having independently reviewed and assessed the course content and

processes, the CPD Standards Office granted formal CPD status to
the Diploma, with Cundall officially recognised as a CPD provider.
All participants who complete the modules and the course will be issued
with an official CPD Certificate of Attendance, which they can subsequently
use within their formal CPD record for professional bodies or institutes,
helping their way towards formal chartership.

“The Cundall Sustainability Diploma has

helped me to understand the significant
role the construction industry has to play in
mitigating global warming and its affects,
and the various tools and regulations I have
been introduced to through the Diploma
modules have influenced how I approach
my project workload in order to achieve
this.”

Sustainability

Sustainability is fundamental to Cundall and we strive to provide our clients

with practical advice and solutions which reduce the environmental impact
of buildings and provide better spaces for the people who inhabit them.

We are extremely proud of the fact that we are the world’s first consultancy
to be formally endorsed as a One Planet Company by sustainability charity
BioRegional. As a company we applied the 10 One Planet Principles to
guide our commitment, actions and services.

We are committed to providing people with the knowledge, skills and

enthusiasm to make a difference: in our homes, our offices, our projects,
our industry and our community. Over the years, we have delivered many
exemplar green buildings and have built up an international sustainable
design expertise that is second to none.

“I love how the offices around the world work

together both socially and professionally.
I think the common vision shared by the
staff (or “Cundallites”) is fundamental in
establishing the Cundall community. It is
the driver behind Cundall’s leadership in the
industry. There is a genuine interest by all
“Cundallites” to further sustainability at work
and at home.”

The Cundall environment

The majority of us spend a large proportion of our lives at work so it’s

vital that we surround ourselves with a healthy working environment.
At Cundall, we take a lot of pride in what we do as a Practice and we
want our employees to feel inspired by the offices they work in, which is
why we are able to offer modern, city-centre workspaces for all.

Most of our workspaces have recently been renovated which has provided
our engineers with the opportunity to develop fit-outs that promote a
creative, healthy and collaborative workspace.

One of our most notable fit-outs is for our new office space in London.
It’s the first project in Europe to implement the WELL building principles to
the design of the fit-out, putting the health and wellbeing of the occupants
at the heart of the building design. The WELL Building Standard® is a
performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring
features of the built environment that impact human health and wellbeing,
through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind. Following
the successful completion of the fit-out, the London office has achieved a
SKA Gold and BREEAM Excellent Ratings and is the first WELL Certified
project in Europe!

“Working for Cundall is a rewarding

experience. It has enriched my career path
and network by enabling me to interact with
a wide range of dynamic professionals.
My involvement on BREEAM projects is to
support the design team and to establish
locally relevant sustainability expertise.
Another thing I enjoy here is the friendly
and energetic working environment.”

Our vision guides our activities, and our values lie at the heart of everything
that we do.

At Cundall, we want to build an engineering consultancy that is

internationally recognised and respected for our work in improving the

clients on exciting and challenging projects, creating sustainable solutions
that go way beyond what’s expected. And we want to continue to attract
and nurture the most dynamic talent. It’s this unwavering desire to achieve
excellence in all that we do that has always driven us.

Corporate Social Responsibility

We believe in running and developing our business in a sustainable way, for

the benefit of those who work in it. We believe that our business interests
are best served by behaving responsibly towards all our stakeholders;
clients, staff, suppliers and the communities in which we operate.

As well as our commitment to improving the built environment - physically

and socially - we actively look for opportunities to improve the working lives
of our staff and contribute to the wellbeing of the wider community. It is this
commitment that lies at the heart of our approach to being a responsible
business. For instance, every year in the UK staff from our various offices
take part in a number of local community projects - the Edinburgh office
took part in a beach clean-up, the London office provided assistance in
developing a playground at Grow Wild’s Somerville Youth and Play Provision,
whilst the staff in the Newcastle office helped to improve the children’s
‘Secret Garden’ area at St Oswald’s Hospice.

Volunteering isn’t just bound to our UK offices; over in Sydney some of

the staff have formed a band to take part in Cundall Rocks - a competition
organised by ‘Construction Rocks’ which aims to raise money for families
in Cambodia and young homeless people in Australia. A few of the team in
Bucharest took part in the ‘Colour Run Topicolour’ to help raise money for
the non-profit organisations AIESEC and GROW.

We also place a large focus on inspiring the next generation and so our staff
volunteer extensively with schools to provide mentoring and guidance to
young people, encouraging them to pursue “STEM” subjects and to help
broaden their understanding of engineering as a career path.
Collaborative Future Cambodia - Cundall, in partnership with UNSW and RAWImpact

We are also committed to sharing our creative expertise with those around
us through the use of modern day technology. For example, ‘Cundall
Conversations’ is an online platform that allows us to share our knowledge
with individuals within the construction industry, building owners,
occupants and the wider community. The blogs vary widely in content and
are composed by a range of people that work at Cundall, from Partners
and Directors who have been at the practice for over 20 years to our young
graduates, all seeking to share and discuss new ideas. They also represent
a wide range of locations, bringing thoughts on local, national and global
trends in the market.

We share a world. What we do in it, as engineers, will echo in our children’s

lives and down on through the years. Every day we create the future’s
history. How we shape it, is up to us. We must hold responsibility as second
nature, in everything we do.
