A brief biography of Hazrat Shah Jalaluddin Janj Rawan

Khuldabad

The Sufi chains who have done many endeavours for the
preaching of the Islamic religion in the area of the Deccan and
India among them which are superior as follows.
1.Chistia 2. Suherwardi.
Among Sufi orders of the India Chistia Sufi order which is
famous and well known. But Sufi order of the Suherwardia
which is old like Sufi chain Chistia. Perhaps in the solid work,
the Sufi chain of Suherwardia’s works weight is more than the
Sufi order of Chistia. In Kashmir, Islam was propagated by Amir
Kabir Syed Ali Hamdani and his son Mir Hamdani like holy
persons and who belonged to the branch of the Suherwardia Sufi
chain. In the Bengal first preacher who was most successful,
there was Shaikh Jalaluddin Tabrizi. And who was the main
caliph of Hazrat Shahabuddin Suherwardi. Generally, the color
of the Chisti order is merciful and but the color of the Sufi order
of Suherwardia is majestic. The results of all these works are
that Suherwardia people around the country engage to beat the
drum of Islam very well and they have propagated with Islamic
religion with much passion. It is regrettable that there is not
compiled the history book of the Suhwardi Sufi order. Even
today there is not available material in this matter. Suherwadri
people who have done much work to separate Islamic India from
the political and cultural centers.
The first holy person of Suherwardi Sufi order arrived in
Devagir Deccan and due to his good endeavours there was much
progress of Islam in the area of the Deccan. And among them
Hazrat Shah Jalaluddin Ganj Rawan and who has prominent
4

status in this matter. And his name is Shah Jalal and his title is
known as Ganj Rawan which means "moving treasure". And
some historians who have written his name as Jalaluddin
Gangerwan. He was born in Bukhara and his tomb is situated in
the southern Suli Bhajan area in Khuldabad.
In the area of Devagir Suli Bhajan the holy persons of
Suherwardi Sufi order who was arrived there first in the 6th
century during the rule of the Sultan of Altamash of the Delhi
kingdom. And he belonged to a person majestic and special
person of Allah. And who a disciple of Hazrat Shahabuddin
Suherwardi. But the author of the book Ishq Rabbani who wrote

city. And he was the disciple of Shaikh Ahmed Ali Tounsavi
and who was disciple of Hazrat Shuabuddin Suharwardi. The

arrival of Sufi saints of the Chistia Sufi Chain.
Upon reaching Devagir the farsight look of Hazrat Shah
Jalaluddin Ganj Rawan who has seen that there will be done
good work of the preaching of Islam all over this area. And he
was settled down near Devagir near the edge of the mountain
and this place is well known and famous as Suli Bhanjan and he
was settled down there along with his companions. And at
present at this place, there is available his tomb. And he has
made this place as his headquarter and he has done the work of
the Islamic preaching with much passion and fondness. Hazrat
Jalaluddin did not go among the Hindu population and he did
not make his plan of his comfort or he did not prepare any
measure of the safety for him. In reality, he has not to fear
anything in this matter because for him there was help and aid
from Allah and which was there with him and it was enough for
5

him in this matter. He has come there for the preaching of Islam
in the area. And he wants to show the simplicity of Islam and by
this method, he wants to enter into the hearts of the local people.
So for this reason on this land, he was done endeavours to bring
Islam on the higher status. And break the darkness of the
infidelity in the area. This was such an area that was covered by
difficult ways and surrounded by high mountains but there is the
praise of this great Islamic holy person and who undergone the
difficulties of the ways and problems due to the service and
fondness of the Islam mission work with much patience and
with happiness in this matter. He has introduced Islamic religion

Ganj Rawan Ganj Baksh belonged to the Suhrawardiyya order

of Sufi saints, which was founded by Shahab Uddin at Baghdad
in Hegira 602. He was the earliest of the Sufi saint of the
Deccan.

Syed Shah Jalaluddin or Ganj Rawan Ganj Baksh (which means

"moving treasure"), was born at Khirkan near Bukhara and
established the earliest Islamic mission in the Deccan about
Hegira year 700, (1300 C.E approx) or a little before the
invasion of Alauddin Khalji. He settled down at Unasnagar,
between Daulatabad and Roza. Ganj Rawan's tomb at Roza has
two trees growing near it, one of which is reputed to have grown
from a staff given him by his preceptor, and the other from a
branch of the first. Both are said to possess miraculous
properties. His dargah has the horse-shoe shaped dome of the
Pathans, with piers on the faces supporting pointed arches. It
stands on the band of Pari-ka-talav, also known as Ganj Ravan
Talav (lake).

Like pilgrims to the Dargah of Zar Zari Zar Baksh, women pray
here to conceive a child and, as a symbol of their prayer, attach
colored bits of fabric and bangles above the door lintel or on the
limbs of the great tree. Praying at this dargah and washing in the
8

waters of the Fairies’ Tank (Pari Talaab) women are said to be

cured of infertility and other ailments.
Additional Information: Also in this courtyard is the tomb of a
Hegra (hermaphrodite or transgendered man) who is said to
have mocked the saint’s ability to help people conceive.
According to the story told by the caretaker of the shrine, the
Hegra became pregnant by the power of the saint but died in
childbirth. Stones mark the grave of both the Hegra and child.
