Pink- Clear Game!
Target Age: Any
Topics: Chemistry
Concepts: Signs of chemical reactions (change of properties, color changes), Titrations, Acids and Bases
Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Brief Description: Changing the amount of acid in relation to the amount of base (and vice-versa)
changes the pH of a solution. Certain indicators change colors based on the pH of a solution.

The Science Behind It:

Phenolphthalein is an indicator that changes solutions from clear to pink in the presence of the a basic pH
(8-9). If you dilute the acid more than the base, the pink team will most likely win because the solution
will more basic, which will cause the phenolphthalein to make the solution pink.

Safety:
Participants should all wear disposable gloves and safety glasses. Ensure that the acid or base does not
spill on anyone. Encourage the kids to perform the battle of the colors quickly, but in a controlled manner
to reduce the risk of spills or splashes.

Materials:
● Erlenmeyer flask/Beaker
● Phenolphthalein
● Diluted Vinegar (acid)
● Diluted Ammonia (base; dilute for safety)
● Pipetes
● 2 Beakers for the Acid and Base
● Pink/Clear Signs
● Goggles and gloves for the kids helping to wear

Procedure:
1. Put phenolphthalein into the Erlenmeyer flask (without the kids seeing)
2. Pour the acid and the base into 2 small beakers.
3. Split the kids into 2 groups, and choose 1 volunteer from each group. Let them put on the gloves
and goggles.
4. Set the timer for 1 minute.
5. Battle of the Colors! Let the kids alternate pipetting their respective acid and base into the
Erlenmeyer flask. Note the color changes! Urge the kids to cheer for their team by joining in with
them!
6. As the last 30 seconds approaches, urge the kids to go faster. Count down as a group from 10.
Declare the winner.
7. Explain the science behind it (pH, acids, and bases)
