SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH IN BELAIR-EDISON

Social Determinants of Health in Belair-Edison Community

Belair-Edison is located at northeastern part of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Belair-

Edison, neighborhood of Baltimore. Most of the houses were town houses with roadside parking.

The people in the community were really friendly. In community people live together. A

community can be a large group or small group of people.

However in community, people share some common factors, such as culture, norms and

values, religion, resources, and risks. The health of people living in that society depends directly

to the access to the economic and social opportunities. The health is determined by outcomes

resulted from social, environmental, economic, and structural differences in societies. The

community health depends upon education, awareness, and knowledge for healthier practices.

There are social factors which effect the health of individual. Social determinants of health help

to study the relationship between the health and the social factors affecting it. Our team took a

windshield tour over a neighboring community, Belair-Edison, to observe the condition of that

community. Then, we examined the relationship between the social determinants of health in

Belair-Edison.

In the fall of 2008, the Baltimore City Health Department released its first iteration of the

Neighborhood Health Profiles. In 2008 Profiles were developed in an effort to provide residents

information regarding the health status of their specific communities, as well as to facilitate

identification of priority health areas and inspire collaborative action. The Baltimore City Health

Department’s mission is to protect health, eliminate disparities, and ensure the well-being of

every Baltimorean through education, advocacy and direct service delivery.
