Aerospace Inspection Training THERMOGRAPHY
CHAPTER 8: Qualitative and Quantitative
1. Qualitative Thermography
1.1 Qualitative thermography relies on analysis of thermal patterns to reveal the existence and
locate the position of anomalies, and evaluate them.
1.1.1 We carry out qualitative analysis all the time. Everything we look at is qualitatively
analysed, if only for a fraction of a second. If something is clearly normal, we just move on.
If something is suspicious, we analyse more closely.
1.1.2. With qualitative thermography, The image is used o find and evaluate possible problems.
Sometimes, but not always, we move on to quantitative analysis.
1.1.3 Note that qualitative thermal imagers and sometimes called thermal viewers.
2. Quantitative Thermography
2.1 Quantitative thermography uses temperature measurement as a criterion to determine the
seriousness of an anomaly, in order to establish repair priorities.
2.1.1 When an anomaly is located, it is sometimes necessary to determine how serious it is. By
taking temperature measurements and analysing the image using evaluation tools, a detailed
explanation of the anomaly can be prepared,
3. Comparing Qualitative and Quantitative
Qualitative ‘Quantitative
Analyse patterns in the image * Used to help classify the seriousness
of the problem
«Find if there is a problem «Temperature measurement involved
Apparent temperature only ‘¢ Compensation is made
Usually done first ‘*_ Not always relevant
3.1. For aerospace applications, it would be unusual to be asked to perform a quantitative
inspection, but thermography covers many engineering applications so it is useful to
understand each process.
