TARI Dakawa centre aims at contributing to the
vision and mission of TARI.

To become a leder in transmeasuarable disciplinary
research and knowldge sharing with measurable
impacts on increasing productivity reducing hunger
and poverty, improving nutrition of small-holder
famers, and leading to improvements in ecosystem
services
OUR MISSION
To develop and disseminate results based research
outputs on Rice, Maize and Horticulture crops and
leading to efficient and resilient farming systems
that protect or enhence farm productictivity, impro-
ve nutrition and raise net income while reducing
reliance on pesticides and fertilizers and contribute
to efficient farming that protect or enhence natural
resources
ADMINISTRATIVE STRACTURE
TARI Dakawa has two departments namely Resea
rch and innovation which is headed by the Centre
Coordinator for Research and INNOVATION
(CCRI) and Technology Transfer and Partnership
(TTP) headed by the Centre Coordinator for Techn
ology Transfer and Partnership (CCTTP).
The CCRI is responsible for all research activities
CCTTP Responsible to scale up/out and disseminat-
eagriculture technologies innovationand good man-
agement practices to stakeholders and establish or
strengthen partnerships.
The centre has a total number of 31 employees.
Among these 13 are researcher (3-HHD, 10-MSC,
and 2-BSC holders). The centre also have 4 field
officers/technicians and 12 support staff in the adm
inistration, accounts, store and workshop sections.
LOCATION OF THE CENTRE
The centre is located at Mvomero district in Morogo-
goro region 45km fro Morogoro municipal and 2km
from Morogoro-Dodoma highway. The centre is loc-
ated 65’S,37 4E of Equator and has an altitude of
360m a.s.l.
RESEARCH MANDATE
This centre has the mandate to undertake research
works in three crops including Rice, Vigetables,
and Maize in (low and medium altitudes
areas) especially in irrigation environments.
AVAILABLE RESOURCES
The centre has two pilot fields of total size of 218.4
hectare. The 100 hectares are found at the Dakawa
Farmer’s irrigation scheme (UWAWAKUDA) with
full irrigation infrastructure used for conducting var
ious researches in collaboration with local and inter
nation researchers and a total of 118.4 hectares that
have not yet been installed for irrigation infrastru
cture.
The office has resources such as, Administrative bu
ilding, Laboratory currently not operating, Confere
nce room, Garage, Hostel for famers and students
with eleven residential for workers within a capacit
y to live 15 families
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The institute has various internal and external resea
rch activities involving collaboration with other
institution under the support of various agricultural
stake holders.
The research activities include, Maintenance of Rice
Maize and Vegetable germplasm, development of
new varieties with famers preferred traits and recom
mendation of good agronomic practices to famers.
Under the department of technology Trasfer and pa
rteship; TARI-Dakawa has done several activities
which involve disseminationof agricultural technolo
gies and innovations to stakeholders. such technolo
gies are.
i. The use of improved rice varieties for increasing
famers yields. Varieties that has been promoted
to famers are TXD 306, KOMBOKA, SATO1
and SATO 9.
ii. Proper agricultural management practices for
salt affected rice field. Famers have been advis
esd to use salt-tolerant rice varieties which are
STO 1 and SATO 9 particulary in these areas.
iii. Proper agronomic packages of improved rice
varieties which includes fertilizers rate and
seed rate
iv. Appropriate use of fertilizers, herbicides and
pesticides
v. Proper agronomic packages for vegetables
roductions
In addition to research activities, the centre also pro-
duces various type of Rice and Maize seeds.
The centre is producing the following rice varieties,
TXD 306 (SARO5), KOMBOKA, TXD85 and
Salt tolerant varieties (SATO 1 and SATO9).
 CLIMATIC INFORMATION

Dakawa has a bimodal rainfall pattern with short

rains from October-December and long rain from
mid February-May. Months of june through Septe
mber is cool and dry. The annual average rainfall
is 1059mm and Temperature ranges from a minim-
um 15C to a maximum of 35C

ACHIEVEMENT
The institute has collected over 1000 accessio of rice,
Maize CH1 including 700 local materials, 170 salt tolerant material
30 material with palatability traits and 17 aromatic TANZANIA AGRICULTURAL
material.The institution preserves 15 registered varieti RESEARCH INSTITUTE (TARI)
es including NERICA varieties suited for uplands areas
DAKAWA RESEARCH CENTRE
The work of producing TXD 306 (SAROS) seeds was
performed at TARI Dakawa along with all the initial
researchers to find this best variety in T anzania and
the actual meaning of TXD is Tanzania Cross Dakawa
This variety is grown in most part of rice growing regi
ons in the counry. All of the initial research activities
for development of other best certified varieties in Tan
zania such as TXD 85 and TXD 88 adopted nationally
was done ta TARI Dakawa

Under maize research the center maintains 70 maize

germplasm including developing of the maize hybrids
using the inbred lines.
The institute currently maintains and collects varius
vegetable seeds of modern and traditional types, curre
ntly there are 5 type of lettuce, 2 types of okra and 3 ty
pes of pepper. For indegenous vegetables we have
songoro malidadi, chamgegedu, mlenda, wild radish
plant and spider plant. The goal is to preserve the natu
ral genetic materials that are known more by older
people and is currently endangered of getting lost.
These natural herbs are rich in nutrients and drugs as
well as endured many challenges such as drought and
deseases.

BACKGROUND
The Tanzania Agriculture Research Institute (TARI)
Dakawa Centre is among the centres of agriculture
research which operate under the Tanzania Agricult-
ural Research Institute. The institute was initially
established as the Agriculture Research Center in
1982. It was built and operated in collaboration
bween the Democratic Republic of North Korea and
the United Republic of Tanzania. By 1985, Korean
experts returned to their home country and lefty the
institution run by Tanzania experts.
