July 2020 Newsletter
The US equity markets had a disjointed month, as indications of a rebound in COVID-19 cases across the US
counterbalanced indices that reached or neared all-time highs. At June’s outset, investors kept the April/
May rally going but volatility crept back with ever-increasing virus cases in states that long-ago opened up
such as Texas, California and Florida. Since the last newsletter on May 31, the S&P and DJII were down just
over 1%, while the technology heavy NASDAQ was up 2.8%. As always, EZTracker model portfolios follow a
long-term investment horizon, and our goal is to deliver superior results over time, not just measured by
one week, one month or one year.

EZTracker model portfolios had been overweight US Large Caps over the past few months, for good
reason, and subscribers have been rewarded for this. Given the volatility due to the rise in domestic COVID
cases and a more positive outlook abroad, we take this opportunity to re-allocate a portion of model
portfolios’ domestic Large Cap exposure to developed European and Asian markets (see p.4 for rationale).
All EZTracker model portfolios have changes this month. Please see page 5 for information.

Is Equities’ Continued Strength

Sustainable?
Since the beginning of this year, investors
have seen the worst global pandemic
since 1918, unprecedented market
volatility, huge support from the Federal
Reserve, stimulus from Congress, a
temporary economic shutdown and the
largest social movements in decades.
And still the markets remain within spitting
distance of their level at 1/1/20. So, as the
second calendar quarter ends, what’s in
store for the short and medium term?

At first glance, many indicators that seem to imply significant upcoming volatility:
- the acceleration of the daily rate of new COVID-19 cases in several American states;
- Stalled plans for further economic stimulus from Congress;
- Economic and labor reports that surprise on the downside;
- Second quarter-end rebalancing could lead to larger than normal month-end selling as institutional
investors aim to maintain specific allocations of stocks vs fixed income instruments.

All of this is a reminder that, despite the market rebound, the outlook for the remainder of the year is still
very uncertain.

EZTracker’s model portfolios take the long term view based on the risk tolerance level that is appropriate for
your current situation. Your risk tolerance level should always be the determining factor as to what model
portfolios are appropriate. If you see markets drop and you cannot sleep at night, maybe your risk
tolerance level is not appropriate for your personal and family situation. As always, it is impossible to
accurately predict the markets highs and lows so EZTracker’s model portfolios do not try to do so.

Re-assess your risk level and choose a plan that suits your comfort level (https://app.tolerisk.com/plan/EZT)

What We’re Watching

Consumer Sentiment: According the University of U of M Consumer Sentiment Index 6/19 - 6/20
Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index, the American
consumer’s overall sentiment is improving based on
prospective expectations of employment and incomes.
Most consumers see prospective growth in the
economy closely tied to scientifi c progress against the
coronavirus. June’s UM Consumer Index fi gure was
fi nalized at 78.9 compared to 72.3 in May and 71.8 in
April.

Employment: May’s labor report issued on June 5 showed a reduction in the unemployment rate for the fi rst
time since the pandemic reached the US, the strongest sign yet that the economic damage may be bottoming
out, although 21 million people remain out of work. Initial jobless claims remained steady at about 1.5 million
per week throughout June so far, although there was an improvement of 60,000 the week ended June 20.

Sector Analysis: Sectors overall were mixed over the last month, led by Technology, Materials and Real Estate,
which have segments that benefi t from social distancing . Laggards were Energy, Communication Services and
Financials. Energy suffered along with month-end oil price declines on growing concerns about output while
crude stockpiles remain at record highs; Communications Services were hit by company-specifi c issues at
Facebook (FB - ad boycott), and Disney (DIS - Florida’s putting the brakes on economic recovery), while
Financials were hit by the Fed’s cap on bank share buybacks and dividends.

Index Analysis: The gap between value and growth stocks widened dramatically during the current pandemic-
related downturn. Leadership in technology, both large and 2nd-tier tech fi rms, has been the general driver of
this “growth” spurt. We continue to overweight Technology and Communication Services in our EZTrackerETF
newsletter.

Fixed Income
Demand for safe haven assets continues to keep yields low, with the 10-yr Treasury yield closing at 0.64%,
almost the same as the level from one month ago. Rates remaining at such low levels generally reflects
investor expectations of a slow-growth future outlook for the US economy. The EZTracker team believes
until we get strong economic data or positive news to the upside, the treasury market will, at best, be
signaling long-term stagnancy —- which means the Fed and the government must keep the stimulus coming
for the equity markets to keep up.

The case for Europe & International Equities

Last week, the European Union posted a higher composite PMI (Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index)
than the US for the first time since March, and only the second time in almost a year. The uptick in economic
activity provided a positive outlook for EU stocks and a focus on economic growth. Other positive steps:
• Germany in early June agreed to a €130 billion stimulus plan which included direct cash payments to
citizens (€300 for each child to families).
• The ECB introduced a €750 billion pandemic emergency purchase program (PEPP) in March, and then
nearly doubled its size in June to €1.35 trillion.
The EU economy has been starved for stimulus for years, and the programs are starting to show up in the
data.
