Part 1
Before watching

Look at some of the questions that the examiner asks the candidates. In the box next to each
question, write down any words or phrases which you might expect to hear the candidates say.

Part 2
Before watching

Choose one pair of photographs (candidate A or B). You are going to talk about the photos
for one minute. Write notes and think about how you will organise your speech. Use the
box below to help you.

Part 3
Before watching
1 Read the task and look at the written prompts for this part.
2 Write down some words or phrases that you might use for each prompt to explain why
these things are important to people nowadays.
3 Write down some phrases that you think the candidates may use to take turns, express their
own ideas and ask for each other’s opinions.

4 In the table in Activity 2 above, circle the words or phrases that candidates use. Add any
other words or phrases you had not included.
5 In the box in Activity 3 above, circle the interactive phrases that candidates use. Add any
other phrases you had not included.
After watching
6 Do the Part 3 task with a partner, trying to keep the interaction going. Stop after two
minutes, then talk about the second question. Try to keep the interaction going for about
a minute – don’t rush to reach a conclusion. Ask another student to listen, make notes and
then comment on the following:
a) How much did each student contribute to the interaction? Did you both have an equal
opportunity to speak? Did you ask each other’s opinions, and also give your own?
b) What language did you both use to ask each other for an opinion?

3 Watch the candidates and think of adjectives to describe how they look:
e.g. relaxed, nervous, confident, etc.

4 In groups of three, discuss reasons why the candidates are at ease in Part 4.
5 Do the Part 4 task in groups of three, taking turns to play the role of the examiner.
