Indoor Pool De-Humidication Systems

Indoor pool air conditioning systems serve two purposes:

1. Creating the ideal environmental comfort for pool occupants.

2. Continuous control of humidity to prevent long-term damage on the building.

requires simultaneous control of a larger number of parameters. The design should be handled as a complete system
where the locations of extract and supply grills as well as the air distribution concept should be planned in detail.
Temperature of the pool water and the temperature of the room are other important factors in determining design. At
this point, Systemair can work with the designer or end user, providing guidance for ensuring the optimum pool

Design Principles
Exchange of air
According to the VDI 2089 norm, 30% of fresh air must be supplied to the pool space in order to reduce the concentration
of the harmful substance trihalomethane, which is a reaction product of the chlorine used for sterilization of pool water.
Furthermore a minimum of four air change ratio must be provided in to remove the harmful gases and odor created. The
possibility that undesired air streams can occur in case of exceedingly high air change rates should also be considered.

Water temperature
Water temperature can vary according to the pool concept. For instance, while water temperature should be around
28°C in pools used for sports competitions, this temperature can vary between 32°C - 36°C in therapy pools. The

evaporation. Aside from maintaining indoor air temperature with the air-conditioning system, the facility must be
equipped with a system which maintains control of water temperature.

Indoor Air Temperature

Temperature of the indoor air must be higher than water temperature for the comfort of pool occupants. When the
temperature difference becomes great, the rate of evaporation from the water surface will increase. Therefore, the
design should ensure that the temperature of the indoor air is 2°C to 4°C higher than the water temperature. While it is
applicable for swimming pools used for sports and recreational purposes, indoor air temperature criteria can vary in
special swimming pools used for therapy and treatment purposes.

Indoor Air Humidity

In addition to causing problems of comfort, high humidity can increase the risk of condensation on cold surfaces,

Heating Active Recirculation Mode

During winter season when the pool is not in use, the unit recirculates indoor
air and discharges high temperature air into the space via the water heater, to
maintain the required air temperature. Thus, the heating load in the space is
provided. Internal pressure losses are reduced thanks to the by-pass valve, and
energy is saved by operating EC motor driven plug fans at low speed.

recuperator and cooling circuit and the air is transferred to the supply side
using the mixing valve. Supply air to which fresh air has been added is reheated
over the recuperator. The residual heat from the condenser side of the cooling
is transferred to the supply air, achieving after heating. The conditioned supply
air is transferred to the space.

In cases where outdoor temperature is exceedingly low, the water after heater
comes online to achieve the discharge temperature required.

unit operates with 100% fresh air. Fresh air is reheated by heat recovery
on the plate type heat exchanger and transferred to the space. If the
temperature of the discharge air is too low to overcome the heat loss in
the space, the additional water heater comes online and precise control of
the discharge temperature is maintained.

S.A. R.A. E.A. F.A.

Summer By-Pass Mode

In cases where outdoor temperature is high, the by-pass valve on the return
line is opened and the return air is directly exhausted. The air handling unit
operates with 100% fresh air and fresh air is directly transferred to the
space without undergoing heat recovery. Thanks to the by-pass valve on
the return line pressure loss is reduced and the expenditure of energy in
fans is decreased by controlling fan speed.

6XPPHU&RROLQJ0RGH 2SWLRQDO

In cases where outdoor air temperature is very high and there is also need
for cooling in the space, low discharge temperature is achieved through the
optional integral heat-pump circuit. As air is cooled through the evaporator
on the discharge line, the residual heat in the condenser is transferred to
the exhaust air. Discharge temperature can be precisely controlled with the
additional after heater when needed.
