FROM THE BOSS Chelsea.
fixture at Anfield this season against

I welcome Frank Lampard, his players, staff and officials

Jürgen Klopp of the visitors to our home.

What a job Frank has done this season. We have played
them three times already this campaign, in three different
competitions and each time the games have been so
close and so tight. They are already starting to reflect their
manager’s personality in how they approach the game
and it’s very easy to see they are heading in the right
direction.
Wonderful players, some really smart and ambitious
recruitments made, superb leadership in the manager’s
office. Chelsea have been a real challenge this season
and will be even stronger next.
Moving to ourselves, as much as the 90 minutes is the
main focus, I cannot ignore the hugely significant night
we are about to experience as a team and as a club.
Yes, as always the game comes first and all our
attention and energies will be on that. We have a
responsibility to the competition, of course, but also
ourselves. We have enjoyed a wonderful season and it
is important we finish it in a manner fitting the level of
achievement. This is something within our control. As
we have all season, we set our own standards and try to
exceed them.
I know I won’t need to remind the players of this,
because they are smart and hungry and they know the
job to do.
When the game is done, we will be recognised as
Champions of England. The first time since 1990 for this
incredible football club.
I know we live in a world where ‘what’s next’ often

“I’m already looking forward to next year’s march, so we can all be together side by

Talking of Jürgen Klopp, you have to have a

BACK STORY
Rocket man, little dancer
Sunday 14 April 2019 and we make no apologies for
revisiting last season’s memorable Mo Salah effort against
Chelsea so soon!
With emotions already high ahead of kick-off as Anfield
stopped to remember the lives lost at Hillsborough ahead of
the 30th anniversary, as well as the passing of all-time great
Tommy Smith earlier that week, rarely has a goal on this
ground been met with such a mix of shock, awe, noise and
utter bedlam, such was the quality of the strike against a big
rival at a key part of the campaign.
This was game five of a 24-fixture winning sequence in
the league on home soil (only just ended by the 1-1 draw
with Burnley). The hosts were already in front at this point,
thanks to Sadio Mane’s header from Jordan Henderson’s
centre early in the second half, his 21st goal of 2018/19 as he
again improved on his tally the previous season.
With the Blues on the ropes it was 2-0 a couple of
minutes later. Trapping Virgil van Dijk’s cross-field pass to
perfection, the Reds’ no11 darted inside past Emerson before
unleashing that breathtaking drive into the top corner of
the Kop-end net. Then came the yoga-pose celebration, the
calm in the manic celebrations all around him.
“Oh wow, oooooh!” describes TV commentator Peter
Drury as the net ripples. “That is beyond special. Brilliant, a
worldie-and-a-half from Mo Salah. Never mind from the top
drawer – that is a goal from paradise.”
Manager Jürgen Klopp said he was “blown away” by the
Egyptian’s goal adding: “I had the best view. I saw earlier
than most people that it would go in. What a finish, what a
shot. But the whole move around it. Wow, brilliant.
“I loved the first goal exactly the same. It immediately
reminded me of the 4-3 against Borussia Dortmund, only

similar situation with this wonderful cross in that area and
really good team-play.
“I'm so proud of the team, it was a fantastic performance.
What a team, what a stadium, what an atmosphere. I'm so
thankful I can be a part of this, it's great. It's just outstanding,
very overwhelming at times.”
Chelsea had their moments in their attempts to get back
into proceedings, with Eden Hazard denied first by a post
and then by Alisson, but the clean-sheet would remain
intact to secure a first home win for LFC over the Blues
since Kenny Dalglish’s last Anfield game as manager in
May 2012.

it was a long way for us from playing in the final of the

make ourselves ready for it because to win the Premier

It's just happened to me and I am lucky and I also need

in the 1970s. Six league titles in the 1980s.
When Liverpool Football Club began the 1990s by
adding league title number 18 to an unmatched roll
of honour, it looked like business as usual for another
decade. But the times they were a-changing.
Sir Kenny Dalglish’s side clinched the 1989/90
championship with a 2-1 home win against Queens
Park Rangers. If you’d told the 37,758 crowd inside
Anfield (all stadiums had their capacities reduced by 15
per cent while the Hillsborough Enquiry was ongoing)
that it would be 30 years before Liverpool would be
champions again, not many would have believed you.
Indeed the Reds started the 1990/91 campaign so well
that they looked certain to retain their crown.
After beating Derby County 2-0 at Anfield in early
October 1990 to make it eight consecutive wins, the
Sunday Times advised: “If your money is not already
on Liverpool for a nineteenth championship, invest
immediately.” But the Reds had a serious challenger.
George Graham’s Arsenal had famously won the
league with the last kick of the season at Anfield in
1988/89. They came nowhere near to challenging in
1989/90 but strengthened in the summer of 1990 by
signing goalkeeper David Seaman and winger Anders
Limpar. It turned them into a team that would lose only
one league game all season.
When the two sides met at Highbury in December,
both were unbeaten. Liverpool were six points clear at
the top, but a strangely cautious starting XI featuring six
defenders – Glenn Hysen, David Burrows, Steve Nicol,
Gary Gillespie, Gary Ablett and Barry Venison – didn’t
66 work as planned. Arsenal won 3-0.
By the time the title rivals clashed again in March 1991,
Liverpool were reeling from Dalglish’s shock resignation
as manager. Arsenal arrived at Anfield top of the First
Division on goal-difference with both sides having
played 25 of their 38 games.
Ronnie Moran was Liverpool’s caretaker-manager.
The only goal of the game was scored by Arsenal’s Paul
Merson.
Three weeks later Liverpool briefly reclaimed top spot

ADAM
He’s seen the ups and downs at Anfield, but
what a way for Jürgen Klopp’s “incredible
professional” to sign off from LFC

Growing up
Ten years ago Adam Lallana was lifting the Football
League Trophy at Wembley as a League One player
with Southampton. Tonight at Anfield he will get his
hands on the Premier League trophy, having also won
the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club
World Cup. Proof that a lot can change in a decade!
Back in 2000, aged 12, Adam moved from AFC
Bournemouth’s school of excellence to Southampton, but
perhaps he was destined to play for the Reds because of
the team he supported.
“It’s true I was an Evertonian,” he admitted after signing This is Anfield

injury also ruled Lallana out of Liverpool’s forgettable FA
Cup semi-final against Aston Villa although he did score
Liverpool’s only goal in Gerrard’s Anfield farewell against
Crystal Palace.
It’d been a disappointing first year as Liverpool struggled
without Luis Suarez. He later reflected: “We just weren’t
playing well. There was a combination of factors: the squad

Being a midfielder for Liverpool isn’t just about pressing
opponents and winning the ball back, it’s about being able
to use it too. Lallana could do both.
During a 2-2 draw against West Ham at Anfield in 2016
he ran a reported 13.7km, setting a new Premier League
record for the most distance covered. The previous record
holder? Adam Lallana.
He made 49 appearances in season 2016/17 – only
Simon Mignolet, Alberto Moreno and Nathaniel Clyne
made more. He also contributed eight assists, including
one for Roberto Firmino when Manchester United were
beaten 2-0 in the Europa League at Anfield, and netted
76 seven goals himself.
One came in a 3-0 home win against Manchester City,
another was Liverpool’s third in a 3-0 Europa League semi-
final second leg against Villarreal. The most memorable
came at Norwich City in January 2016.
On a crazy afternoon at Carrow Road the Reds went one-
nil up, 3-1 down and 4-3 up only to concede a 92nd-minute
equaliser. Then, in the 95th minute, Lallana popped up to
fire a bouncing, left-footed volley into the net and spark
wild celebrations. Shirt off, he jumped into the arms of his
manager whose glasses were broken in the melee.
Adam almost had another Wembley goal a month later.
Silver lining
The 2016/17 season was Lallana’s best in terms of goals
with eight in 35 appearances. On target on the opening
day of the season in a 4-3 win at Arsenal, he also scored
Liverpool’s final goal of the campaign as the Reds beat
Middlesbrough 3-0 in a must-win game to secure
Champions League qualification.
His seven assists also included creating a New Year’s Eve
winner for Gini Wijnaldum against Manchester City.
But ahead of 2017/18, a thigh injury suffered against
Atletico Madrid in pre-season meant he didn’t start a
game until New Year’s Day. In the Champions League final
against Real Madrid in Kiev he came on for Mo Salah and After playing as a no6 in the FIFA Club

Ben Winterbottom

KEEPERS
PLEDGE RED
FUTURES
Two of Liverpool Football Club’s Academy
goalkeepers agreed terms to extend their stays with
the club earlier this month.
Vitezslav Jaros has signed a new long-term contract,
having joined as a 16-year-old from Slavia Prague in
2017. The Czech keeper initially formed part of the club’s
Under-18s squad working with goalkeeping coach Neil
Edwards and was part of the FA Youth Cup-winning
team in 2019, a victory secured in a dramatic penalty
shoot-out.
Stepping up to the Under-23s last year under the
guidance of coach Mark Morris, he made his senior
bow with the first team in the pre-season friendly at
Tranmere Rovers, but an elbow injury in training the
following day required surgery and he was ruled out of
action until February.

Vitezslav Jaros The 18-year-old was then part of the senior squad that
played at Anfield against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup
fourth-round replay when Liverpool’s youngest-ever side
progressed.
He’s tweeted: “More than happy to be able to sign a
new long-term contract with this wonderful club.”
Meanwhile Ben Winterbottom has signed his first
professional contract with Liverpool FC. He joined the
Academy last year after impressing on several occasions
against the Reds for his former club Blackburn Rovers.
Ben, who celebrated his 19th birthday last Thursday,
started last season in the U18s but was turning out for
the U23s by September. His debut in Premier League 2
was a memorable one, making a spectacular penalty save 81
against Derby County.
He was also part of the U19s team which secured top
spot in their UEFA Youth League group and the U21s
team that took on Football League opposition in the
group stages of the Leasing.com Trophy.
He made 19 appearances across various age-group
competitions last season. In December he was on the
bench for the first team as a youthful side took on Aston
Villa in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup at Villa Park.
On his Instagram page he wrote: “Buzzing to sign my
new deal with the world’s best! Can’t wait to get back to
it. YNWA.”

Brighton & Hove Albion v LIVERPOOL

REDS MATCH RECORDS ON SOUTH COAST
• Mo Salah scores twice and creates another as the Reds equal
the club record of 30 wins in a single league season. Salah
sweeps Liverpool ahead in the sixth minute after Naby Keita
wins possession deep in Brighton territory, and it's another Keita
counter-press that leads to Jordan Henderson curling home a
second 127 seconds later from Salah's pass.

• Neco Williams, on his first Premier League start, blocks a

certain goal for Leandro Trossard but the Belgian volleys a goal
back for the Seagulls before half-time. Salah then heads his
second goal of the night, from Andy Robertson's corner, but
can't convert a couple of late hat-trick chances.

• The 3-1 victory also means Liverpool equal the club record of 13
away league wins. “We have 92 points and last season we had
97,” says Jürgen Klopp. “We got five points more than this last
season – that's unbelievable, I have no idea how we did that!”

GOAL: Trossard (45).

LIVERPOOL v Burnley
MOBILE POPE KEEPS REDS AT BAY
• Liverpool's run of 24 consecutive home Premier League wins
ends as Burnley become the first visitors to get a point at Anfield
since January 2019. Andy Robertson brilliantly heads the Reds in
front from Fabinho's chipped cross, but a second-half strike by
Jay Rodriguez earns the Clarets a draw.

• Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope denies the Redmen with a

string of saves from Curtis Jones, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane,
while Roberto Firmino strikes the inside of the post. Robertson
has a penalty shout turned down and Salah shoots straight at
Pope late on, but at the other end Johann Berg Gudmundsson
rattles the crossbar.

• “For moments it was Liverpool against Pope,” says Jürgen

Klopp. “He did really well, but we should have scored. We did
everything right and he made saves, but we should have scored
more. That's on us. We didn't close the game and they took their
moment.”
GOAL: Robertson (34).
LINE-UP (4-3-3): Alisson, Williams (Alexander-Arnold 69), Gomez,
van Dijk (C), Robertson, Wijnaldum (Oxlade-Chamberlain 81),
Fabinho, Jones (Keita 69), Salah, Firmino, Mane. Subs not used:

GOAL: Rodriguez (69).

Arsenal v LIVERPOOL
DOMINANT REDS UNLUCKY AT EMIRATES
• Champions Liverpool are beaten by Arsenal for the first
time since 2015. Striker Sadio Mane puts the Reds ahead
with a fine first-time finish from Andy Robertson's cross, but
rare errors from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson allow the Gunners
to come from behind with Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss
Nelson getting on the scoresheet.

• Jürgen Klopp's side have 24 shots on goal but just can't find
an equaliser, Mo Salah coming closest when forcing keeper
Emiliano Martinez to tip over. It's the first time that Liverpool
have lost a Premier League game when scoring first since
April 2017 and means, for what it's worth, that they can't quite
match or beat the league record of 100 points.

• “I can't make something negative from something so

positive, we get the points we deserve and we will see how
many that will be,” says the boss on missing out on that
record. “These boys played an exceptional season, nobody
can take that away from them.”

GOALS: Lacazette (32), Nelson (44).

LINE-UP (3-4-3): Martinez, Holding, Luiz, Tierney, Soares (Maitland-
Niles 76), Torreira (Ceballos 57), Xhaka, Saka (Kolasinac 57), Nelson
(Aubameyang 58), Lacazette (C) (Willock 57), Pepe. Subs not used:
Macey, Bellerin, Sokratis, Mustafi. Booked: Torreira, Ceballos, Xhaka.

GOAL: Mane (20).

LINE-UP (4-3-3): Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk (C),
Robertson, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Keita 61), Fabinho, Wijnaldum
(Shaqiri 83), Salah (Origi 83), Firmino (Minamino 61), Mane.
