s oc i a l , c u l t u r a l y d e l a s a r t e s d e l a s A m é r i c a s , c o n u n o b j e t i v o p r i n c i p a l
p a r a l a c o n s t r u c i ó n d e u n e s q u e ma p a r a u n a p r o p u e s a d e p e r i o d i z a c i ó n l a
c ua l s e r á u n d i s p o s i t i v o i n d i s p e n s a b l e p a r a l a i n v e s t i g a c i ó n h i s t ó r i c a , e n
e l e nt e n d i d o d e q u e t o d a p r o p u e s t a i n v e s t i g a t i v a d e s d e l a h i s t o r i a l l e v a
implícita la necesidad de construcción o adhesión a un modelo o esquema
d e p er i o d i z a c i ó n d e s d e u n a d i v i s i ó n d e l t i e m p o h i s t ó r i c o d e c u a l q u i e r
g r a do d e c o mp l e j i d a d y s e g ú n c u a l q u i e r m o d e l o t e ó r i c o a c e p t a b l e . E n e l
c as o d e l a i n v e s t i g a c i ó n q u e n o s p r o p o n e m o s e m p r e n d e r, i n i c i a r e m o s l a
misma desde un enfoque provisional para una propuesta de un esquema
d e p er i o d i z a c i ó n d e g r a n d e s a l c a n c e s a b a r c a t i v o s e n l o c r o n o l ó g i c o y,
l u e g o, d e n t r o d e c a d a u n o d e e s t o s g r a n d e s l a p s o s h i s t ó r i c o s p r e -
establecidos, proponemos ir incluyendo las subdivisiones que surjan como
r es ul t a d o d e l a s u l t e r i o r e s y s u c e s i v a s i n v e s t i g a c i o n e s , e n l a m e d i d a e n
que se vayan ejecutando. En un primer momento, e insistiendo siempre en
el carácter provisorio de las propuesta iniciales, delimitaremos nuestro
trabajo inicial a cuatro grandes períodos, cuyos hitos de demarcación
( i ni c i o y f i n a l d e c a d a p e r í o d o ) e s t a r á n s u j e t o s a e s t u d i o . E l p r i m e r o y a l
que denominaremos Periodo prehispánico-europeo, estaría conformado
por el lapso transcurrido entre el poblamiento inicial del continente , como
hito incial, el cual se estima que pueda haber tenido lugar al menos hace
cincuenta mil años y hasta el cerca del año 1500 de nuestra era como hito
f i n al , c o n l a l l e g a d a d e l o s e u r o p e o s a l a s A m é r i c a s . E n e s t e p e r í o d o
i r e mo s r e v i s a n d o l a s d i v e r s a s h i p ó t e s i s d e p o b l a mi e n t o s o b r e l a s q u e
existe algún grado de consenso en las ciencias sociales, así como las
f or m a c i o n e s s o c i o - h i s t ó r i c a s y c o mu n i d a d e s a b o r í g e n e s p r i m i t i v a s y l a s
s oc i e d a d e s d e l a s á r e a s d e M e s o a m é r i c a y e l á r e a a n d i n a , e l C a r i b e y s u s
i s l as y c o s t a s y l a s z o n a s l i mí t r o f e s d e l o s p o l o s S u r y N o r t e d e l
c on t i ne n t e . E l s e g u n d o g r a n p e r í o d o q u e p r o p o n d r e m o s e s t a r í a
c on f i gu r a d o p o r e l l a p s o t r a n s c u r r i d o e n t r e l a l l e g a d a d e l o s e u r o p e o s y l a
i m p l a nt a c i ó n d e l o s r e g í me n e s q u e r e s u l t a d e l o s p r o c e s o s d e c o n q u i s t a
en todos los territorios de las Amèricas con énfasis en los que implantaron
l o s es p a ñ o l e s y e l s u r g i m i e n t o d e H i s p a n o a m é r i c a , d e f i n i e n d o a l g u n a s d e
s us c a r a c t e r í s t i c a s t a l e s c o m o r a s g o s “ f e u d a l e s ” y “ c o l o n i a l e s ” c o mo h i t o
incial. Denominaremos a este segundo período Periodo hispánico-europeo
y pr o p o n e m o s q u e e l m i s m o t r a n s c u r r e d e s d e f i n a l e s d e l s i g l o q u i n c e y
hasta fines del siglo diecinueve e, inicialmente, consideramos que este
perídodo no estaría, necesariamente, vinculado a las independencias
p o l í t i c a s d e l a s m e t r ó p o l i s e u r p e a s n i a l s u r g i mi e n t o d e l a s R e p ú b l i c a s
americanas, sino más bien a criterios que respondan a modos y modelos
d e i nt e r c a mb i o , a p r o p i a c i ó n y a s i m i l a c i ó n d e i d e a s , c o n s i d e r a n d o l a
p e r s i s t e n c i a o n o d e e s a s i d e a s e n l o s r a s g o s d e f i n i t o r i o s p r e s e n t e s e n l as
manifestaciones culturales y artísticas americanas y no restringiendo la
delimitación del período al concepto de formación económico-social. Las
f as es a l i n t e r i o r d e l e s t e p e r í o d o p o d r í a n s e r e s t a b l e c i d a s s e g ú n c r i t e r i o s
a d et e r m i n a r p o r l a i n v e s t i g a c i ó n , e n c u a n t o a r a s g o s c o m u n e s o n o , a
nivel continental. En cuanto a las fechas, estas serán sólo aproximativas y
s e us ar á n c o n g r a n p r u d e n c i a y s ó l o p a r a s e ñ a l a r a l g u n o s h i t o s o
p r oc es o s d e c a mb i o s s o c i a l e s , c u l t u r a l e s y e s t é t i c o s s i g n i f i c a t i v o s . E n e l

desarrollo económico y social de las sociedades/culturas americanas así

independencia de factores económicos, ideológicos y políticos, así como
s i t u ac i o n e s d e “ d e s a r r o l l o d e s i g u a l ” 1 , o b l i g a n a d e t e n e r s e a v e c e s y o t r a s
a p as a r p o r a l t o , m a n i f e s t a c i o n e s y f e n ó m e n o s d e p o s i b l e v a l o r l o c a l y
otras particularidades, para enfocarnos en seguir elementos que
c on s i d e r a r e m o s c o m o e s e n c i a l e s e n l o s p r o c e s o s h i s t ó r i c o - c u l t u r a l e s y
e s t ét i c o s d e s d e u n a p e r s p e c t i v a c o n t i n e n t a l y g l o b a l , y a q u e e s s o b r e l a
b a s e d e u n e n f o q u e c o n t i n e nt a l y g l o b a l , q u e h e m o s c o n c e b i d o y d i s e ñ a d o
esta propuesta de investigación. Es conveniente precisar que este perído
n o es t á p a r a n a d a v i n c u l a d o a m o d e l o s c o n f i g u r a d o s d e s d e e n f o q u e s d e
d e s a r r o l l o s o c i o e c o n ó mi c o y q u e e n e l m i s m o p u e d e n t e n e r c a b i d a
s oc i e d a d e s / c u l t u r a s t a n d i v e r s a s c o mo l a s a c t u a l e s s o c i e d a d e s / c u l t u r a s
amazónicas y las culturas metropolitanas de las grandes urbes de las

ABSTRACT

The present research proposal develops the theoretical framework, the

hypothesis system and the methodology for the investigation of the social,
c ul t ur a l a n d a r t s h i s t o r y o f t h e A m e r i c a s , w i t h a m a i n o b j e c t i v e f o r t h e
c on s t r u c t i o n o f a n o u t l i n e f o r a p e r i o d i z a t i o n p r o p o s a l w h i c h w i l l b e a n
indispensable device for historical research, with the understanding that
every research proposal in history implies the need to build or adhere to a
periodization model or scheme of a historical time division of any degree
o f c om p l e x i t y a n d a c c o r d i n g t o a n y a c c e p t a b l e t h e o r e t i c a l m o d e l . I n t h e
c as e of t h e r e s e a r c h t h a t w e i n t e n d t o u n d e r t a k e , w e w i l l i n i t i a t e i t f r o m a
p r ov i s i o n a l a p p r o a c h t o a p r o p o s a l f o r a p e r i o d i z a t i o n s c h e me w i t h a w i d e -
r a n gi n g c h r o n o l o g i c a l s c o p e , a n d t h e n , w i t h i n e a c h o f t h e s e g r e a t p r e -
established historical periods, we propose to include the subdivisions that
arise as a result of subsequent and successive investigations, as they are

the Spaniards implanted and the emergence of Hispanic America, defining
s om e o f i t s c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s s u c h a s " f e u d a l " a n d " c o l o n i a l " f e a t u r e s a s a n
i n i t i a l l a n d m a r k . We w i l l c a l l t h i s s e c o n d p e r i o d t h e H i s p a n i c - E u r o p e a n
P er i o d a n d p r o p o s e t h a t i t r u n s f r o m t h e e n d o f t h e f i f t e e n t h c e n t u r y t o t h e
e n d of t h e n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y a n d , i n i t i a l l y, w e w i l l c o n s i d e r t h a t t h i s
period would not necessarily be linked to the political independence of the
E ur o p e a n m e t r o p o l i s e s o r t o t h e e m e r g e n c e o f t h e A m e r i c a n R e p u b l i c s , b u t
r at h e r t o c r i t e r i a t h a t r e s p o n d t o m o d e s a n d m o d e l s o f e x c h a n g e ,
appropriation and assimilation of ideas, considering the persistence or not
of those ideas in the defining features present in American cultural and
artistic manifestations and not restricting the delimitation of the period to
t h e c on c e p t o f e c o n o m i c - s o c i a l f o r m a t i o n . T h e p h a s e s w i t h i n t h i s p e r i o d
c ou l d b e e s t a b l i s h e d a c c o r d i n g t o c r i t e r i a t o b e d e t e r m i n e d b y t h e
i n v es t i g a t i o n , i n t e r m s o f c o m m o n f e a t u r e s o r n o t , a t t h e c o n t i n e n t a l l e v e l .
A s f o r t h e d a t e s , t h e s e w i l l o n l y b e a p p r o x i ma t e a n d w i l l b e u s e d w i t h
g r e at c a u t i o n a n d o n l y t o i n d i c a t e s o m e m i l e s t o n e s o r p r o c e s s e s o f
significant social, cultural and aesthetic changes. In the case of the dates
o f po l i t i c a l e v e n t s , t h e i r i m p o r t a n c e w i l l b e a n a l y z e d , f u n d a me n t a l l y, f r o m
a s y m b o l i c p e r s p e c t i v e a n d w i t h t h e i r p r o b a b l e o r v e r i f i a b l e e ff e c t s a n d
i m p ac t o n A me r i c a n , l o c a l , r e g i o n a l a n d t r a n s r e g i o n a l c u l t u r e s a n d a r t s .
The third period that we propose would correspond to the cultural, artistic
and aesthetic processes that can be inscribed within what we will call the
Modernity-postmodernity period in the cultures and arts of the Americas,
w hi c h w i l l n e c e s s a r i l y h a v e a s h o r t e r d u r a t i o n a n d i n w h i c h t h e y w i l l h a v e
g r e at e r w e i g h t b o t h p o l i t i c a l - c u l t u r a l f a c t s i n t h e i r i n t e r t w i n i n g w i t h
aesthetic processes such as technological and economic developments
with significant impacts on American cultures and arts, in the context of
new research proposals that can contribute to refining new definitions and
c on c e p t s . T h e f o u r t h a n d l a s t p e r i o d , w h i c h w e w i l l c a l l t h e
C on t e m p o r a r y - P r e s e n t P e r i o d i n t h e C u l t u r e s a n d A r t s o f t h e A m e r i c a s ,
r a i s es o t h e r p r o b l e ms . T h e g r e a t d i v e r s i t y o f d e g r e e s o f e c o n o m i c a n d
s oc i a l d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h e A m e r i c a n s o c i e t i e s / c u l t u r e s a s w e l l a s i n t h e
c ul t ur e s a n d t h e a r t s i n t h e i r o w n p r o c e s s e s o f r e l a t i v e i n d e p e n d e n c e f r o m
economic, ideological and political factors, as well as situations of
“ u n ev e n d e v e l o p m e n t ” 2 w i l l f o r c e u s t o s t o p s o m e t i m e s a n d i n o t h e r c a s e s
i g n or e m a n i f e s t a t i o n s a n d p h e n o m e n a o f p o s s i b l e l o c a l v a l u e a n d o t h e r
particularities, to focus on following elements that we consider essential in
h i s t or i c a l - c u l t u r a l a n d a e s t h e t i c p r o c e s s e s f r o m a c o n t i n e n t a l a n d g l o b a l
p e r s pe c t i v e , s i n c e i t i s o n t h e b a s i s o f a c o n t i n e n t a l a n d g l o b a l a p p r o a c h ,
t h at w e h a v e c o n c e i v e d a n d d e s i g n e d t h i s r e s e a r c h p r o p o s a l . I t s h o u l d b e
pointed out that this period is not at all linked to models configured from
s oc i o- e c o n o m i c d e v e l o p m e n t a p p r o a c h e s a n d t h a t s o c i e t i e s / c u l t u r e s a s
diverse as current Amazonian societies / cultures and the metropolitan
c ul t ur e s o f t h e l a r g e c i t i e s o f t h e A m e r i c a s m a y h a v e a p l a c e s i n c e t h e y
are located on the same time horizon.

Uneven and combined development would be a fusion of two closely related laws. Its first aspect refers to the different proportions
in the growth of social life. The second, to the concrete correlation of these unevenly developed factors in the historical process. The
development of social organization and particular social structures exhibits inequalities no less pronounced than the biological
history of the ancestors of the human race. The various elements of social existence have appeared at different times, evolved in
vastly different proportions, and developed to different degrees under different conditions. The inequality of world historical
development has seldom been more remarkable than when the aboriginal inhabitants of the Americas first confronted invaders from
Europe. There were found two completely separate routes of social evolution, products of ten to twenty thousand years of
independent development in two Hemispheres. The inequality of development between continents and countries is accompanied by
a similar uneven growth of the different elements within each social group or national body.
