The following guidelines apply to O Plus C TM bushings manufactured by ABB Power T&D Company Inc. For
draw lead application, the maximum continuous current rating of the bushing is limited to the rating stated on the
bushing nameplate. The maximum current in the draw lead , however, is limited by the size of the cable selected
by the transformer manufacturer as the draw lead is an integral part of the transformer. While choosing the cable
size for the draw lead, care should taken so as not to exceed the rating stated on the bushing nameplate.
Many factors contribute to the temperature rise of the cable e.g. current, cable size, cable paper thickness, top oil
temperature rise and it’s level. This document only gives guidelines and it is the transformer manufacturer’s
responsibility for correct application of the draw lead.
The following table lists maximum continuous current ratings for different sizes of stranded copper cables for
draw lead application in O Plus C TM bushings. These ratings are based on draw lead temperature rise tests
made on 69 kV to 245 kV bushings.
To minimize cable insulation loss of life during overloading of transformer, choose a suitable cable with current
capability of at least 20% above the rated current of the transformer.
1. Maximum ambient air temperature of 40o C, and an average of 30o C over a 24 hour period as per the IEEE
Standard C57.12.00 - 1993
2. Maximum top oil temperature rise of 65o C above ambient air as per the IEEE Standard C57.12.00 - 1993
3. Maximum cable hottest spot temperature rise of 80o C above ambient air.
4. Maximum external bus or cable temperature rise of 30º C above ambient air.
5. Maximum radial insulation (thermally uprated) per side of 0.031 inch or 0.79 mm on the cable.
For calculating the cable hottest spot temperature rise, use Equation (1) of the IEEE standard C57.19.100 -
1995. The use of this equation requires thermal constants. Please contact ABB Alamo or your local ABB
representative for these constants. For limitations and other loading guidelines, refer to C57.12.00 - 1993, C57.91
- 1995, and C57.19.100 - 1995
The short time current withstand of the cable can be calculated by using the method given in Section 7.6 of the
IEC standard 137 - 1995. The maximum short-time hottest spot temperature rise of the cable should be limited
to 180 o C.
