If you’ve ever been part of it, you’ll under-

stand why. The area hugs the small desert
town of Virgin in the state of Utah. Perched
on the top of the mountain, the start line
launches the riders over seemingly count-
less ridges and canyons. As a result, the
lines are so technically demanding that
the number of riders prepared to sacrifice
themselves at this alter of freeriding is
dwindling year on year.
Rather than shying away, SRSUNTOUR

has already competed four times since
2015. Our WERX athletes Mitch Chubey,
James Doerfling and Kurt Sorge arrived
with the next generation RUX R2C2 PCS
fork and shovelled out totally sick lines
into the hillside before building offsets of
unbelievable proportions.

Thanks to an imminent storm, the final

run was brought forward. (Even without
storms, winds are unpredictable up here
on the bare desert mountain.) Both Mitch
Chubey and Kurt Sorge made it to the fi-
nals but high winds forced them to cancel
their second runs. Kurt Sorge struck while
the iron was hot and focussed totally on his
first and only run, which included an insane
Suicide No Hander, enormous Whips and a
Backflip No Hander. The judges were in no
doubt and Kurt took over the Hotseat. As
rider after rider tried and failed to top his
run, it was only a matter of time before Kurt
was crowned King of the Red Bull Rampage.
SRSUNTOUR is equally proud of Kurt’s vic-

tory and its first Rampage title. It goes with-
out saying, that you need luck on your side
to win but with the awesome support of the
WERX team, anything is possible in the cra-
ziest freeride event on earth.

test rides and consultation with our
mechanics, I found my ideal setup.

Our WERX team “Centurion Vaude”
takes on the Epic with two teams.
Knowing how to pace yourself, when
to pull on the front when to sit in and
when to attack is what makes these
riders amongst the best in world. The
physical, psychological and of course
mechanical demands of this race are
in the extreme. If it can go wrong,
it does go wrong. And this year it
went very wrong before a pedal had
been turned. One of the pairings was
forced to withdraw through illness
and injury. Preparation is key and as
you would expect there was a stand-
by duo ready to step in.
The teams’ bikes were equipped with

UNAir rear shock. Not only is this the
toughest mountain bike stage race in
the world, technical support isn't al-
lowed during the stages which means
the riders need equipment that won't
let them down in the middle of nowe-

SRSUNTOUR WERX
When you are climbing, how do you know if you are close to the top? Well, the legs get heavi-
er, possibly the climb gets steeper; the air becomes thinner as well as the number of com-
petitors. A few years ago when SRSUNTOUR and our WERX program set out we focussed
on the gradient. Despite the top being out of sight, as long as the way was up, we knew we
were headed in the right direction. When the climb
got too steep, we slowed down and occasionally we
marked time when con-

However, we never took a step back. We fought
every inch of the way. The view today is from the top
of the Pic Blanc with Remy Absalon having captured
the Megavalanche (the longest, hardest downhill
race in the world) twice. The Canadian Kurt Sorge
has crested another peak by winning the most spec-

the Red Bull Rampage in 2015. We have not reached
our personal zenith yet but we take the rarefied air as a sign of continued success. In the
downhill World Cup Series, our athletes are battling it out for the podium places. In 2016, we
climbed onto the men’s elite podium in the XCO World Cup. We even have Olympic athletes
at both U23 women and men levels. There are now four Olympians riding SRSuntour. Who
knows where the top is, but we are relentless in our pursuit of the summit. The SRSuntour
WERX program continues to flourish in the rarefied atmosphere of high altitude success.
