A. Cattle:

1. Cross bred cattle from Jersey and Holstein derivatives:


DCIP: PPRS: Selection of bull mother to produce bull calf, use of semen from progeny tested bull for
bull mother cow for each of Nepalese Jersey and Nepalese Holstein breeds development
2. Lulu cattle: conservation through selective breeding
3. Achhami cattle: conservation through selective breeding
4. Other cattle Upgrading using Jersey breeds in the hills and Holstein breed for improved
management condition
B. Buffalo

1. BGIP: similar to DCIP using semen from Murrah breeds adopting upgrading the local cross bred
buffaloes to develop Nepalese Murrah breeds
2. Other breed cross breeding with Murrah
3. Conservation of Parkote and Lime
C. Goat

1. Selective breeding in Goat: Khari


2. Cross breeding Terai goat with Jamunapari, Barbari in the western region
3. Cross breeding local goat with Boer goat for meat production under test
4. Cross breeding local goat with Sanen for goat milk production small scale
D. Sheep

1. Bhyanglung: Selective breeding for carpet wool


2. Baruwal: crossing with many imported breed like Polworth, Merino, Rambuillet, but
now focused for carpet wool production
3. Kage for fertility crossing with border Leicester

E. Pig

1. Chwanche: cross breeding with Dharane black or PAC black pig


2. Hurrah: Extensive grazing system with low input maintained by Dom community
3. Nagpuri/Meihshan: fertility, use for cross breeding Dharane breeds of local black breeds
4. Pakhribas Black pig : obtained from three breed crosses from Hampshire, Faun and
tameworth
5. Duroc: use for cross breeding as terminal sire for meat quality
6. Landrace : Pure breeding and for cross breeding with Yorkshire fir fattener production
7. York shire: pure bred breeding and used for cross breeding for fattener production
F. Poultry

1. Dual purpose poultry breeding: Giriraja, New Hampshire, Australorp


2. Broiler: importing parent stock by hatcheries
3. Layers : Importing parent stock by hatcheries
G. Quail:

Meat type and egg type

H. Turkey

I. Ostrich

J. Rabbit: Angora wool type

Q-1. Describe the current dairy cattle breeding programmes in Nepal. Can we be able to produce
Nepalese Jersey Breed or Nepalese Holstein Breeds in Nepal? If yes, what are the advantages of it?

Q-2. Describe genetic basis for utilizing breed differences. How these can be utilize and what factors
will determine the choice of breed and breeding system.

Q-3. Enumerate the traits of economic importance in dairy cows and buffaloes. Which of the two
species would you consider more economic and important for augmenting the national milk productivity
and why?

Q-4. Suggest a suitable breeding in detail for improving the efficiency of milk production in Nepales
buffaloes.

Q-5. How meat traits of pig could be improved? Describe the current breeding schemes that are being
practiced in Nepal. Give suitable improved breeding plans for the pig breeding scheme.
