INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This Research Paper is recommended for any Psychology student at Southville

International School and Colleges to read so that they can become better versions of

themselves. For any Southville Student to succeed in the College of Psychology, they need to

acquire the traits of Self Concept and Work Values. Psychology Students need to work on

having a better Self - Concept to have an easier time understanding themselves better

emotionally or socially. It is important for Psychology Students to have a stronger knowledge

of themselves better so that their own Self - Concept can form and regulate.

If they have a better Self - Concept after they graduate, then they will have an easier

time to better understand themselves since it is a required characteristic for any Psychologist.

Once you align your values to the company's then your traits will also be seen in your action

or behavior on the given tasks to you and to the challenges that you encounter. When you
have enough knowledge of your self-concept then most probably you know your work

values. Work Values are a subset of one's belief and idea that they relate to their job or

occupation. Work values include creativity, management, security, etc. To be mindful of

oneself is to have your concept of yourself and it is when you know yourself that you can be

an effective student because you know you do things with purpose and you can transfer or

reflect your traits, behavior, and skills. Self-concept also talks about your holistic knowledge

of yourself in the past, your awareness of it in the present and your expectations in the future.

Psychology Students need to strive hard to have better Work Values to have a more

meaningful purpose in their Careers or Future. Work Values can affect a person's Value

Effects as well as making them more active in their field and which makes a person push

himself to become successful in the future. This also can make a person have better work

ethics to improve their work habits

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study of this research paper aims to investigate the relationship between Self

Concept and Work Values of 2nd Year Psychology students.

Specifically, this study answers the following questions:

1. What is the relationship between self-concept and work values?

2. Why are self-concept and work values connected?

3. Why are self-concept and work values important?

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The Researchers selected the students of Southville International School in Bs

Psychology(2nd year) as respondents of their study. The study is to find out the relationship

between self-concept and work values of 2nd-year Psychology students at SISC International

School.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will help students have a better understanding of themselves and they can

become better versions of themselves. Since they are Psychology majors they need to be

more motivated by improving themselves. At the end of the study, they will realize that they

can be controlled by themselves. The result of this study will serve as a guide to provide an

informative understanding of the relationship between self-concept and work values of

2nd-year Psychology students at SISC International School. The research study is designed

to contribute to the knowledge of teachers or the base in preservice teacher preparation.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

and serving to identify it.

Belief- an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists.

SELF-CONCEPT

Self-concept comes from the ideas, beliefs, and character as a person, it involves both

our physical and mental feelings. "The definition of the word tends to evolve and change

over time as we know more about ourselves", Vinney 2018. Self-concept has two faces,

positive and negative. This concept could refer to the complex or an organized system of

beliefs and opinions that a person considers their existence."The idea of it represents

structures that consist of confidence, social roles or attributes, and goals, Beheshtifar 2013."

There are claims and theories that self-concept is multidimensional and that it helps

individuals find the understanding of memory and behavior. There are different attributes
related to individual self-perception: competencies, traits, and values. Various focal points

are made up of personal and social identities, they refer to self-categorization based on

comparisons with others to find one's uniqueness. Self-categorization is used to discover a

person's social identity through relationships or group membership, thus emphasizing the

similarities and connections. Chechack's study in 2015, explains that the theory of

self-concept is only a fraction of conceptualizing the tension that may occur between

personal and professional values. Inevitably, they both coexist as part of the person. Social

labor readership would be improved by the conceptualization given to focus the profession

on self-awareness, self-reflection, and professional growth and development.

WORK VALUES

Work values can be essential or optional depending on the individual. These values

are what make the foundation for a good student or employee, part of an individual's beliefs

and ideas that concern one's career. "Core principles include integrity, commitment,

self-respect, unity, and accomplishment, McKay 2018". Work values also include skills,

interests, and attitudes that provide continuity and guidance to your chosen career. This is

one component in self-concept that an individual won't surrender, in any event, when

confronting troublesome decisions. Individuals have the principles that they follow.

Since the birth of "social workers, their attention was focused primarily on cultivating

a set of values on which social work will abide. Over time, the profession has evolved and

developed a set of values that gave purpose to generations of social workers. Today, our

enduring commitment to vulnerable and oppressed people, individual well-being and social

justice are all based on what is properly defined as the "rich value base of the profession."

Indeed, this longstanding commitment to ethical practice and value exploration has placed

social work "among the most value-based of all professions." (Chechak, 2015; Reamer,

2006).
Based on a study of the J-Phil Marine Incorporated, operation reveals that one of the

challenges in the organization is to improve operational efficiency and reduce fixed and

variable costs to enhance profitabilityCaroline D. Ayap and Julie Macalalad(2016, February).

What J-Phils consider very important is the intellectual achievement, familial and

interpersonal aspects, while subscales of work values are important. Respondents are highly

satisfied with their job. Age, length of service, monthly income and educational attainment

are highly influenced/related to the work values.

SELF-CONCEPT AND WORK VALUES

Your self-concept can influence all aspects of your life, including your job. Your

self-concept is your understanding of who you are and what you can do. As far as the career

is concerned, the self-concept can revolve around your work identity and whatever you think

you are capable of doing. Positive and negative self-concepts can affect career decisions. For

instance, when you trust in yourself, you will have more opportunities for growth. You will

also take more risks and deal better with likely refusals, which will increase your chances of

career success. A negative self-concept, on the other hand, makes you feel as though your

ability is minimal, a feeling that can be self-perpetuating. In other terms, if you assume that

you are unable to develop your profession, you will not be seeking incentives. That means

you're going to skip the opportunities for growth and stay where you are (Mack, 2017).

Self-concept is a source of work motivation in that individuals are driven to preserve

and develop an internalized image of self. Specifically, the significance which individuals

assign to knowledge also depends on the strength of their self-perceptions and their need to

validate their self-concept. In an organizational setting, employees make choices between

behavioral alternatives, set and accept work objectives, undertake projects, and generally
make direct efforts to obtain work and social feedback that is consistent with their

self-concept. Besides, when there is a conflict between self-concept and social or task

feedback, workers can engage in a variety of adaptive techniques to maintain consistency

between their self-concept and performance feedback (e.g. may commitment, modifying

feedback)("Self-Concept Theory," n.d.).

Consequently, in a research conducted by Cowin ( as cited by Nesje, 2014), it was

known that among 2000 selected registered nurses, in their study, the self-concept of nurses

has a strong correlation with their job retention plans where significant factors were

professional status and organizational policies. A fact which states that if self-concept is well

aligned to one's work values and the organization's core competencies then the efficiency of

work and its productivity will be better. This research also recommended that organizational

policies should be nurse-friendly and have autonomous practice models and health team

learning opportunities. Indeed when one's self-concept and work values go hand in hand the

tasks in the workplace are lightened and give a result with quality.
