GSM Based Door Lock System
Name: Bilwa Gaonker (17BIS0114) Lab Slot: L51 + L52
Abstract: The need of safety for our homes can be accomplished by making the locks more
electrical and coping up with the upcoming technology of internet of things. This idea is not
just confined to the small spaces but also the large spaces like industrial spaces. For example,
some technology devices are used for automatic door locking and unlocking. Such systems
are usually made using digital keypads, RFID card readers etc. The main objective of this
project is to provide safety to personal spaces like home. In this system the user will be
setting the password and when the correct passcode is entered, user will be given access by
unlocking the door. If any intruder tries unlocking then the buzzer will create alarm and in the
meantime SMS will be sent to the user alarming about intruder at the door.

Introduction: In today’s world it is very essential to provide the security system employing
various alarm systems in the residential areas. A home security system with GSM technology
services can be achieved to control door lock with password and SMS service. This GSM
based door lock system is designed using Arduino UNO microcontroller is used. Servo motor
will perform the unlocking and locking of door once the password entered through keypad is
correct. This method is combination of mechanical and electronic systems and is highly
efficient. One of the distinct features of this system is the simplicity and high efficiency.

Main idea behind this project is a door opening system using a keypad and turning the buzzer
on to give the alarm in case wrong password is entered and sending message using the GSM
SIM800C module. LCD Display is used to display the status of the password entered. After 3
times of entering wrong code, it doesn’t allow to enter any further keys. GSM is the most
secure mode of communication that has been established till now and it is the secure way
through which messages get delivered. Another advantage of GSM Module is that the
communication is possible from remote locations that don’t have internet connection.

Tools used for work:

Hardware:

16X2 LCD Display:

This LCD Display consists of 16 columns and 2 rows. It is programmed using
<LiquidCrystal.h> library in Arduino IDE. There are 16 pins and out of which 8 pins are data
pins and rest all are Vss, Vcc, Vee, E, RS, R/W, LED+ and LED-. 4 out of 8 data pins and
other 8 pins are connected to Arduino Uno and LCD is programmed accordingly. In this
project LCD Display is used to display the status of entering the password, unlocking and
relocking of door and also display the intruder alert.

Arduino UNO:

Arduino UNO is a microcontroller based on ATmega328P. It has total of 20 pins out of

which 6 are analog and rest all are digital pins. (6 of them provide PWM voltage). It has an
USB connection to power the board up and upload the code from the laptop to the board. It
has a power jack (used to power the board up) and a reset button (reset the board and gets it
to the starting point of the code). It has an operating voltage of 5V and provides 5V if needed
for sensors and other components. It has 3 GND pins for giving ground voltage. In this
project Arduino UNO is the central monitoring system.

10kΩ Potentiometer:
Potentiometer is the variable resistor that varies resistance according to the length of wire that
is given for conduction. In this project t is used to adjust the contrast of the Liquid Crystal
Display (LCD). In the picture, black wire (fixed end) is connected to ground; green wire
(variable end) is connected to Vee pin of LCD; red color wire (fixed end) is connected to 5V.

9V battery:

9V battery is used to supply voltage to the GSM Module and other components.

5V passive buzzer:

In the project, passive buzzer is used to create beep sound indicating the entry of wrong
password. “+” indicates positive end and is connected to 5V and negative to ground.

GSM SIM800C Module:

GSM Module is a device that can call or send messages or a device that can be used to create
a device that communicates over a network. GSM module needs power supply and SIM card
that operates over a network range subscribed by the network operator. In this project we are
using GSM module to send SMS to the owner of the house.

Servo Motor:

The servo motor used is SG980 Micro Servo for opening and closing the door. This is
programmed using library <Servo.h> in the Arduino IDE. There are three ends to be
connected to the Arduino. Red color wire is supposed to be connected to +5V; brown wire is
to be connected to the ground; orange wire to be connected to the digital pins of Arduino that
supports PWM.
4X4 Keypad:

This keypad is the user interface part of the project and is programmed using the library
<Keypad.h> in the Arduino IDE. The first 4 lines that are having the black mark are the rows
and the remaining 4 are the columns of the keypad. This is important while connecting then
to the Arduino and mentioning the ports in the program.

Software:

Arduino IDE: Used to type the program required to run all the hardware components
according to the requirement. This program is first compiled and then uploaded to the board
by setting the correct COM port.

Methodology Used:

In this project we are using Arduino UNO as the microcontroller. First all the necessary
libraries are included to make the program compatible with all the hardware used. In the
program written for this project the password is pre-defined in the program and fed to the
microcontroller. Keypad is the user interface and the user/owner can add the password
correctly and get the access. If the key entered is correct then the door unlocks and it opens
i.e. the servo motor turns 90 degrees and then closes back after a certain amount of time.

Here the program is written in such a way that each key pressed by the user has to be correct.
If the taps on keypad fail, each time buzzer raises alarm for a short time. Even if one key is
wrong the password has to be entered again. The wrong trials set are three. After the three
attempts, intruder alarm will be raised hence buzzer will buzz for a long time creating an
alarm for the neighbours or security nearby. Within this time period, SMS will be sent to the
owner about intruder alert, so that he/she can contact police just in case.

LCD Display is used to make it user friendly by displaying the messages whether the
password is being entered correctly or not. Potentiometer is used to adjust the contrast so that
the text displayed is visible to the user. GSM Module is the communication method used
between the owners even if he/she is in remote location, they will be updated with the status
of security of the house.
GSM Modems:

A GSM modem can likewise be a standard GSM cell phone with the fitting link and
programming driver to interface with a sequential port or USB port on your PC. GSM modem
is normally desirable over a GSM cell phone. The GSM modem has wide scope of
utilizations in exchange terminals, inventory network the executives, security applications,
climate stations and GPRS mode remote information logging.

In nowadays, the GSM portable terminal has turned out to be one of the things that are
continually with us. Much the same as our wallet/tote, keys or watch, the GSM portable
terminal gives us a correspondence channel that empowers us to speak with the world. The
prerequisite for an individual to be reachable or to call anybody whenever is exceptionally
engaging.

In this venture, as the name says task depends on GSM organize innovation for transmission
of SMS from sender to beneficiary. SMS sending and getting is utilized for universal access
of apparatuses and permitting rupture control at home. The framework proposes two sub-
frameworks. Machine control subsystem empowers the client to control home apparatuses
remotely and the security ready subsystem gives the programmed security checking.

The framework is fit enough to teach client by means of SMS from a particular cell number
to change the state of the home machine as per the client's needs and necessities. The
subsequent viewpoint is that of security ready which is accomplished in a manner that on the
identification of interruption, the framework permits programmed age of SMS in this manner
cautioning the client against security chance.

Mathematical relation:

No such relation used.

Cost Analysis:

This project:

Hardware cost: Arduino (Rs392) + GSM (Rs990) +Servo (Rs105) + LCD Display (Rs169) +
Buzzer (Rs69) + Keypad (Rs103) + potentiometer (Rs130) = Rs 1958

For real time: Can cost around Rs 10,000 with the proper motor and better microcontroller.

Results:

After giving the power supply and uploading the code to the Arduino Board, “Enter
password” message appears.
While entering the password, it appears in ** format, to maintain the privacy on display.

After entering the correct password with correct taps we get the message “Access Granted”
“Welcome” and as we observe the servo motor has moved by 90 degrees. That means door
has opened.
Relocking message:

After a wrong tap, buzzer buzzes and LCD displays “Code Wrong”.

After maximum number (3) of wrong taps the buzzer buzzes for 5 seconds and LCD displays
“Wait for 5 seconds”, “Access denied” after that.
The messages sent to the phone:

Conclusion:

The GSM Based Door Locking System has developed for safety of individuals. The user has
a unique password and has three attempts for unlocking the door. An unknown person cannot
have the access to open the door and only the registered user can be given the right to access.
Hence the system is secure.
