Writing: Produces factual and literary texts contrasting and comparing information. 3

INTRODUCTION: Mankind, as many other mammals, is destiny to walk around, not to fly; that might
be why he has always been fascinated about flying, and has tried to imitate how birds do it. Through
this worksheet we will unveiled some of the reasons and results of this human ambition. Furthermore,
we will be reviewing some grammar of the term as the conditionals in the present and past.

CONDITIONAL CLAUSE AND MAIN CLAUSE

If I have enough money, I will go to Japan.

conditional clause         main clause
I will go to Japan, if I have enough money
main clause         conditional clause

First, Second, and Third Conditional

1. First conditional: If I have enough money, I will go to Japan.
2. Second conditional: If I had enough money, I would go to Japan.
If I had had enough money, I would have gone to
3. Third conditional:
Japan.
Conditional clause Main clause
1. If + Present Tense will + inf / present tense / imperative
a. If you help me with the dishes (if + pres),
I will help you with your homework. (will + inf)
b. If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by three,
the number is divisible by three (Pres. tense)
c. If you see Mr Fox tonight, tell him I am ill. (imperative).

2. If + Past Tense would + infinitive

3. If + Past Perfect Tense would have + past participle
We do not normally use will or would in the conditional clause,
only in the main clause.

USAGE:
FIRST CONDITIONAL: We use the first conditional for things that are real or possible in the present or
future.
SECOND CONDITIONAL: We use this conditional to talk about unreal or improbable situations.
THIRD CONDITIONAL: We use this conditional to talk about things that were not possible in the past,
or to regret about a situation in the past.

PRACTICE # 1: Decide the correct form of the verbs in each blank space according to the conditional
they represent.

1. (First conditional) If we ________ (not / work) harder, we ________ (not pass) the exam.
2. (Third conditional) If the students _________ (not be) late for the exam, they _________ (pass).
3. (Third conditional) If the weather _______ (not be) so cold, we _____________ (go) to the beach.
4. (Second conditional) If she _______ (have) her laptop with her, she ___________ (email) me.
5. (First conditional) If she _______ (not go) to the meeting, I __________ (not go) either.
6. (Third conditional) If the baby _________ (sleep) better last night, I ___________ (not be) so tired.
7. (First conditional) If the teacher ______ (give) us lots of homework this weekend, ______ (not be)
happy.
8. (Second conditional) If Lucy _________ (have) enough time, she ____________ (travel) more.
9. (First conditional) If the children ___________ (not eat) soon, they ______________ (be) grumpy.
10. (First conditional) If I _________ (not go) to bed soon, I ___________ (be) tired in the morning.

PRACTICE # 2: Complete the idea with the correct form of the conditional tense.

11. If I wanted a new car, I _would bought _ (buy) one.

12. If José did not speak good French, he ___wouldn`t move__ (not move) to Paris.
13. If John _drank_ (drink) too much coffee, he would get ill.
14. If we had tidied our flat, we _would not have lost__ (not lose) our keys.
15. If Luke _had not sent__ (not send) flowers to his mother, she wouldn’t have been so happy.
16. If the children __weren`t __ (be) in bed, I wouldn’t be able to have a bath.
17. If you weren’t so stubborn, we ___wouldn`t have___ (not have) so many arguments!
18. If Julie hadn’t gone to Sweden, she __would have gone__ (go) to Germany.
19. If she __goes__ (go) to the library, she will study more.
20. If we _hadn`t had_ (not have) an argument, we wouldn’t have been late.

PRACTICE # 3: Read the passage below about the reasons for the man to go into space, and decide
which form of the conditional verb to use.

1. The Apollo missions inspired an entire generation of students to pursue math and science
careers. If we tell students that “You could be the first astronaut on Mars!” or “You could be the
one driving the next Mars rovers (travelers)!” this ___will be___ (be) a pretty effective way of
inspiring them to study science and math.
2. Many criticized them, but If the NASA didn’t spend that much money on space exploration we
_wouldn’t know_ (not/know) much about asteroids, planets, climate change, and so many
helpful things for our own benefit.
3. NASA does not launch buckets of cash into space. The majority of the money spent on space
exploration goes toward the salaries of thousands of skilled American workers who make
NASA’s missions so successful. If these smart men weren’t’ paid well, it __wouldn`t be__
(not/be) feasible for the NASA to be that successful.
4. Space exploration brings together a lot of smart people from many different fields and puts
them to work on some very difficult problems. The result is not only fantastic scientific
discoveries, but also many useful inventions. If the NASA _didn`t exist_ (not/exist), healthier
baby food or technology to better diagnose breast cancer wouldn’t be possible.
5. Large space exploration projects are almost always the result of international cooperation. The
International Space Station is the most obvious example, but the space shuttle regularly has
astronauts from other nations, and many robotic missions include instruments built by teams in
other countries. If it hadn’t been for the support of other international space explorers, NASA
_would not have made_ (not/make) that much progress.

PRACTICE # 4: Critical thinking. Complete the idea with a conditional sentence that makes sense.
Think of ideas that relate to traveling into space.
1. If Colombia were a rich country, it would be more possibilities to do something related to the
NASA.
2. Travelling into space is a very expensive endeavor. If rich countries dedicated this money to
homeless families in the world, these families wouldn`t have to many economic problems.
3. If I wanted to become an astronaut, I would traveled through the space.
4. Unless you are a rich country, you will not have a space shuttle.
5. If I worked for the NASA, I would know the secrets of the area 51.
6. Colombia could afford to have a space shuttle, if it were a rich country.

PRACTICE # 5:
Answer the following questions expressing your own opinion on it.
1. Do you consider man should continue expending that much money on space research? Why?
2. What would happen if humankind stopped exploring the outer space?
