Road, Railway Line and Irriga�on Canal Projects require the construc�on of culverts and bridges to cross
natural drains such as rivers, nalas, and streams. These structures are called cross drainage (CD)
structures, and the width of the vent way required to allow the flood at these loca�ons is called linear
waterway (LWW). These comprise of Pipe culverts, Box culverts, and slab culverts.

Cross drainage structures form a significant part in the study report prepara�on as well as for execu�on
projects.

The prepara�on of these drawings could be painful and �me-consuming as the structure parameters
change dynamically from each loca�on. Typically, it is ideally proposed for about four to five culverts in 1
km. This indicates that there are considerable drawings to be prepared for any construc�on project.

ESurvey Structures is the solu�on to address this challenging job. Improper cross drainage structures can
cause swamps on both sides of the road embankment and could lead to floodwater levels. In hilly roads,
the alignment may cross the same drainage more than once as it gets reversed at sharp horizontal curves
and hairpin bends. In such cases, linear waterways are provided to match the drain width and the CD that
needs to be constructed on the extreme downstream such that it gets a more linear waterway.

Pipe Culvert
When a pipe is placed in an excavated trench to move water away, it is referred to as pipe culvert. It is the
most commonly used cross drainage. Its ease of installa�on and also being economical has made this type
of culvert very popular.

The advantages of pipe culverts are many; it is easy to construct, can achieve any length, can withstand
high tensile and compressive stresses. Backfilling is easy and does not require an approach slab in general
as sufficient cushion is ideally provided in normal condi�ons.

These culverts may be constructed as a completely new one or extended/widened.

Pipe culverts are the most common types of culverts as it is economical and easy to install. They are found
in different shapes such as circular, ellip�cal, and pipe arch. Generally, their shapes depend on site
condi�ons and constraints. Pipe Culverts on a small scale represent regular pipes like concrete pipes.

As per IRC SP 013, 2004 guidelines Pipe Culverts are called as Hume Pipe Culverts.

Box Culvert
Box culverts are four-sided rectangular structures, the lower side pressed into the ground below over the
PCC, the top slab serves as the roadway, and the lateral sides supported by the soil on either side of the
obstruc�on.

A box culvert may be provided with a single box, or mul�ple box cells placed side by side. The velocity of
flowing water might change because of the bo�om slab. The sharp corners of the box-shaped slabs make
it unsuitable for vehicles running at high velocity. It is used for rainwater disposal and drainage.

How to design culverts using ESurvey Structure?

new culvert or improve exis�ng culvert by retaining the exis�ng culvert.
