III. LESSON SEQUENCE
A. Lesson 1: Personal Health Issues and Concerns

B. Introduction:
Good day everyone!
As a grade 6 pupil, many of you are experiencing changes in your body. That
is because you are now approaching puberty.
But what is Puberty? It is the period during which adolescents reach maturity
and became capable of reproduction. It is also the stage when your body
experiences so many changes.

It helps to know the how‟s and the why‟s of these changes one may
experience so that you know what to expect. Because of these changes, many
teenagers are having issues and concerns about their personal health.

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to describe the personal health
issues and concerns during puberty.

Now that you are approaching puberty, what are the personal health issues
that you have experienced? What do you think are cause of these health issues
and concerns?

 Look at the two pictures of teenagers below. Using the table, describe each of
them.

Can you describe them to me? What can you say about their built? What can you
see on their faces? Do they sway back or lean forward?

Let us jot down the observations that we have by completing the table below.
Write your observations on the space provided.

HEIGHT (TALL, WEIGHT (FAT, SKIN (DARK, POSTURE TEETH (PRESENT,

Below are some of the Personal Health issues and concerns that a teenager
experiences. Let‟s check it out.

The first on our list are the issues and concerns about Height and Weight. I
know that some of you have questions like “why am I not as tall as my
classmate?” or “Why am I not as slim as my friend?”. Let us find out why.

There are several factors you need to consider when it comes to height and
weight. And these factors are as follows:

• Familial - Short/Tall parents have a tendency to bear children who are

short/tall.
• Illnesses - Ailments experienced during infancy may cause growth problem.
• Hormonal - A problem affected by the pituitary gland that cannot produce
growth hormone.
• Congenital - Affected by Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), a condition in
which a baby does not grow at a normal rate inside the womb.
• High weight-for-height - There is a high consumption of fatty acid and sugar
food.
• Low height-for-age - Failure to reach one‟s growth potential due to health
problems and poor nutrition.
• Low weight-for-height - Extreme thinness associated with acute starvation,
severe disease, or chronic unfavorable condition

“Woah! Wait a minute. I can‟t see clearly.”

Sounds familiar? This is how many of you feel after looking at the screen of your
cellphones or even looking at the monitors of your computers. You spent too much time
playing games or watching too much video that your eyes seems too tired to functions. Little

Neaduldulao
Alanea.duldulao@ddeped.gov.ph Page 3
did you know that these may cause eye problem. Let us find out what other eye problems
teenager experience nowadays.

• Astigmatism–images are distorted because of the cornea (the clear outermost

layer of the eye) or a lens that is not evenly or smoothly curved.
• Myopia or Nearsightedness–a condition in which one can see close objects
clearly but objects farther away may appear blurry.
• Hyperopia or Farsightedness–a condition in which one can see far objects
clearly but close objects may appear blurry.
• Conjunctivitis (sore eyes)–a common eye infection caused by bacteria or
virus.

Your mom always tells you that you have to clean your ears regularly, right? Why do
you think so?
Yes, even your ears can accumulate problems if you don‟t take good care of it. What
are these ear problems? They are as follows:

• Cerumen Impaction –refers to the build-up of layers of earwax within the ear
canal to the point of blocking the canal and putting pressure to the eardrum and
often caused by misguided attempts to remove earwax.
• Swimmer’s Ear (External Otitis) –an infection in the outer canal ear.
• Otitis Media –an infection in the middle ear.

“Tigyawat sa ilong, pati na sa pisngi

sa kakaisip sa „yo, tigyawat dumarami!”

Are you familiar with this song? Yes, this was a popular song during the 70‟s. It
shows how teenagers relate having pimples to their crushes. But did you know that pimples
are not the only skin problems that teenagers have? Let us find out more about Skin, Hair
and Nail Problem

• Sunburn –refers to prolonged exposure to the sun that caused damages to the
skin.
• Calluses –are rough, thickened skin that develops because of constant and
repeated pressure/friction.
• Blisters –small bubble on the skin filled with serum and caused by friction,
burning etc.
• Dandruff –shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp.

Neaduldulao
Alanea.duldulao@ddeped.gov.ph Page 4
As a pupil, you tend to carry heavy bags when going to school. Sometimes, you feel
back pain and as time goes by, you notice that there is something wrong with the way you
stand or walk. These issues can be related to Posture and Spine Problems.

The following are several posture and spine problems of teenagers have nowadays.

• Lordosis (swayback) -is the backward curvature of curvature of the lower

spine
• Kyphosis is a more extreme forward curvature
• of the upper spine.
• Scoliosis -sideways curvature of the spine.

Have you visited your dentist lately? Have you had your teeth cleaned recently? If
you don‟t, then, you are prone to the following Oral and Dental Problems.

• Cavities -tooth decay

• Gingivitis -inflammation of the gums (swollen, tender, and bright red or purple
gums).
• Halitosis (bad breath) - unpleasant smell of the mouth caused by bacteria
from decayed food particles and poor oral hygiene etc.
• Periodontitis -inflammation of tissue around the teeth, causing shrinkage of
the gums.
• Malocclusion (sungki) -refers to the teeth that are not aligned properly.

Now, that we are through with our journey, let us watch the following PowerPoint
presentation to further understand the different personal health issues and concerns during
adolescence.

Lesson 3: Health Appraisal Procedures

B. Introduction:

Have you ever wonder why every start of the school year, doctors and nurses visit
your school to measure your height and weight? They also check your teeth and test your
ear and your eyes?

The school gathers the health information of the pupils. Each pupil should undergo
Health Appraisal Procedure every year. But what are Health Appraisal Procedures? Why
should you undergo such procedures? Let us find out why.

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to explain the importance of Health
Appraisal Procedures and understand the reason why you should undergo these procedures
regularly.

But first, look at the pictures below, then, answer the questions that follow:

Neaduldulao
Alanea.duldulao@ddeped.gov.ph Page 13
1. What does the pictures all about?
2. Based on the pictures, what are the procedures to appraise our health?
3. How often do you think we must undergo health appraisal procedures?
4. Why do you think we must undergo these procedures?

Health Appraisal Procedure is a procedure to determine the health statue of the students.
Regular health appraisal can help you avoid absenteeism and poor school performance by
early detection of poor health conditions. The following health components are part of your
school health appraisal.

Health History – Your school will keep a record of your history like immunizations, childhood
illnesses, allergies, previous hospitalizations, medication used, significant accidents or
injuries, surgeries, and chronic illnesses.

Family History – This includes the general health of parents and siblings. It also includes
history of family diseases and your physical environment.

Current Health Status – This includes your dental status, current family medical problems,
allergies, and your behavior.

Screening Procedures – This includes the following:

 HEIGHT and WEIGHT MEASUREMENT- is important when monitoring an infant or
child‟s health. It is used to calculate your body mass index, or BMI, a measure of
healthy versus unhealthy weight. They are also important when tracking a child‟s
growth.

 BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION- Breast self-examination helps doctor check that

everything is normal. Doctors don‟t usually start doing breast exams until a girl is in
her 20s. During breast exam a doctor or nurse practitioner will feel a woman‟s breast
to check any lumps and bumps and see if there are changes.
 HEARING TEST - A hearing (audiometric) test is part of an ear exam that tests how
well a person is able to hear. It is done by measuring how well sound can reach the
brain.
 VISION SCREENING- is an efficient and cost –effective method to identify children
with visual impairment or eye conditions that are likely to lead to vision loss so that a
referral can be made to an appropriate eye care professional for further evaluations
and treatment.

Neaduldulao
Alanea.duldulao@ddeped.gov.ph Page 14
 SCOLIOSIS TEST- This is a simple screening test that can detect potential
problems. If you notice any unevenness, you should contact your doctor for an exam.
Using a scoliometer can help determine the severity of the curve. Scoliosis is usually
confirmed by taking X-ray of the entire spine looking from front to back.

To further understand Health Appraisal Procedures, let us watch this Powerpoint

presentation.
