3 Warning and Safety Notes

There are parts inside the unit which are in direct contact to the power supply mains. Certain
service operations at the units ME M1 and ME MB1 require the unit to be operated with opened
case to perform measurements as well as alignments. Then the common safety rules are to be
noted to avoid electric shock. The part of the HF generator PCB which is in contact to mains
voltage is located at the rear left side of the board and is separated from the residual circuits by a
mark. The insulation of the heatsink at the left side from mains voltage is not a safety insulation
as described in the IEC 601 standard!

There are capacitors in the input circuit of the SMPS which keep a voltage up to 20 Seconds after
disconnection from mains, the level of which may cause electric shock on body contact.

In the secondary circuit and at the HF generator, voltages are generated during operation with
DC level up to 115 Volts and peak levels up to 800 Volts. Especially the big heatsink at the right

side of the board may have touchable high levels versus electronic ground level which may cause
electric shock.

Rev 1.1 5
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

It is the nature of an electrosurgery unit to generate high voltages of high frequency for dissection
and coagulation of corporal tissue. Though body contact to such voltages does not result in
electric shock, it may result in severe burns in a point even in case of unipolar contact because of
HF leakage currents. Direct bipolar body contact of the HF current may result in severe injuries.

4.3 Properties and Handling

The front panels of the ME M1 and ME MB1 are designed in a manner that keeps visible the
relationship to the other MARTIN units with their clearly and self-explaining arrangement.

The ME M1 has two monopolar operation modes, the ME MB1 a third bipolar mode additionally.

Power setting is performed by means of rotary knobs, where the set power increases
approximately linear with the angle of turn. Each operation mode has its own power setting.

The selection of a current mode within one operation mode is performed by lighted keys with
mutual release of latch. Selection of a current mode is acknowledged by lighting of the operated
key. The ME M1 has two monopolar cutting currents and two monopolar coagulation currents,
additionally, the ME MB1 has one bipolar coagulation current.

The first monopolar cutting current mode “Monopolar Cutting 1" is intended for smooth as least as
possible eschar forming cutting and will be selected by the first key. The second current mode
„Monopolar Cutting 2“ for eschar forming cutting with simultaneous hemostasis will be selected by
the second key. both keys are marked with the standard logos for smooth and eschar forming
cutting. Both cutting current modes are suited for all surgical procedures inclusive urology.

„Contact Coagulation“ will be selected by operation of the left key in the section of the operation
mode of monopolar coagulation.

„Spray Coagulation“ will be selected by operation of the right key with the standard logo for this
kind of current. The HF output voltage in this current mode is exceptional high which results in a
coagulation more confined to the tissue surface and is markedly different from the contact
coagulation which acts rather into the depth.

Spray coagulation can also be used in urologic procedures to stop bleedings with the resection
loop of the resectoscope.

Additionally, the ME MB1 has the current mode „Bipolar Coagulation“. This mode will be activated
by the blue footswitch pedal for coagulation. For this purpose, the control path of the footswitch at
the front panel must be set to bipolar operation mode with the footswitch key in the section of
bipolar operation mode. If the footswitch shall activate monopolar coagulation again, the
footswitch key in the monopolar coagulation section has to be operated before.

Activation of an operation mode will be indicated by a light in the section of the front panel
corresponding to this mode and by an acoustic signal. The loudness of this signal will increase
after 15 Seconds of uninterrupted activation of one current mode. Because the uninterrupted
activation tome of a current is shorter in general, this shall give a warning to the user about a
probably unintended activation by inadvertently stepping at the footswitch or any fault with the
unit or its accessory.

The monopolar sockets for handpiece and neutral electrode connectors are recessed into the
surface for touch proof.

Rev 1.1 8
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

The units ME M1 and ME MB1 have a monitoring system for the neutral electrode which monitors
unsectioned neutral electrodes for correct connection or cable faults as well as two-sectored
neutral electrodes additional for correct application. Monitoring of correct application will be
performed adaptive, i. e. the unit matches automatically to individual peculiarities of electrodes
from different manufacturers as well as those of different patients. The phenomenon that alarm
will not disappear or disappear after long time in one case and does not reappear though the
electrode is peeled off of the skin for more than the half area in another case does not occur. The
unit will recognize a single use electrode which is folded with the sections to each other or
attached to a metal surface as faulty (impedance alarm).

In case of alarm of not connected or insufficient applied neutral electrode the red light above the
neutral electrode socket will blink. On attempt of activation of a monopolar operation mode an
intermitting acoustic alarm signal will be audible. In case of impedance alarm, the blinking
frequency of the red light will be half, so this kind of alarm can be distinguished from the other
one which will be important for correct trouble shooting. In the alarm state, the activation of
monopolar HF activation is disabled, however, bipolar activation is not affected by this.

The units ME M1 and ME MB1 have a monopolar active electrode handle socket to which
optional a handle with MARTIN coax connector or with a three-pin connector as is common in the
US market may be plugged. Activation of HF current may be performed by the handle or by foot-
switch. There is a mutual latching of activation signals in a manner that in case of simultaneous
operation of both finger switches or both footswitch pedals or of one finger switch together with
one footswitch pedal none of both functions will be valid.

Additional, the ME MB1 has a coax socket for connection of a MARTIN cable for instruments for
bipolar coagulation.

The mains socket for detachable mains cord together with the mains fuses is at the rear of the
unit. The lighted mains switch is at the front.

Setting of the unit to the mains voltage is performed at the manufacturer’s site, the setting is
marked at the rear side. A later change to an other voltage can be done by use of another
bridging plug inside the unit and exchange of the mains fuses.

Additionally, at the rear side, there are an equipotential connector and an outlet for the acoustic
signal as well as an alignment orifice for the basic loudness.

The case is made from sheet steel and has no venting slots. It is located on four stands.

For fixing the unit at a console, there are receptacles in the bottom which enable the click-on at
ballpin bolts.

4.4 Mechanical Design

Guideline for the design of the units ME M1 and ME MB1 have been an almost simple and clearly
visible assembly to make service as easy as possible.

The bottom part of the case serves as a rack which picks up the HF generator PCB, the mains
inlet, the equipotential connector the sound transducer and the front part with handling elements
and sockets.

Rev 1.1 9
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

The front part is placed in guiding grooves below and fixed in its position with two threaded bolts
at the upper side. At this front part, the connection sockets are fixed with screws either direct or
with means of flanges, the front PCB is fixed screwless by snap-in between elastic snap fixtures.
At the front side, the top of the case is fixed in a groove in the front part, at the rear side it is fixed
by four screws at its rim.

4.5 Description of Circuit

The basic operation and the wiring of the ME M1 and ME MB1 is visible from the block diagram
and the wiring diagram at the following pages. The units contain two PCBs. At the front PCB,
there are the keys for selection of an operation mode and the indication lamps. The main PCB
incorporates the power supplies, the HF generator, control and the patient circuits with their
interface circuits.

Power Supply

Circuit connected to mains (live part) Intermediate circuit

(Secondary side of power supply)

Rev 1.1 11
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

The power supply consists of an auxiliary supply and the main supply for HF generator operation.

The auxiliary supply voltage is generated by a mains transformer which is placed at the main PCB
with consecuting SMPS for 15 Volts. From this 15 Volts supply, a 5V voltage controller is fed
which serves as supply for the microcontroller and its peripherals. The mains transformer is
protected by an integrated thermoswitch and additionally by a fuse F1 (315mA medium blow) at
the primary side and by a fuse F2 (1.6A medium blow). On change to another mains voltage by
exchange of the plug X6, the primary of this transformer will also be changed.

The variable power supply voltage from 0V up to 115V to feed the HF generator will be generated
by a primary-side switchmode power supply unit with half bridge topology. The output power of
the HF generator will be controlled by the level of this DC voltage.

The primary side protection of this SMPS is performed outside the main board with two slow blow
fuses in the mains cord socket which form the protective fuses of the unit. The value of these
fuses is 4A for the mains voltage range 220V - 240V and 8A for the range 100V - 127V. At the
rear side of the unit is a mark which indicates the value of the applied fuse and to which mains
voltage the unit is set. The change to another value of mains voltage will be performed by
exchange of the plug X6.
Warning! If the unit will be connected to 230V if it is set to 100V - 127V, this may cause
damage to the SMPS!

Control of the SMPS is performed by a SMPS controller at the secondary side which drives the
transistors at the primary via pulse transformers. The operation frequency is about 100kHz.

The power supply circuit contains a current limiter circuit which prevents damage caused by a
shorted circuit in a fault condition.

Please note that a part of the power board is connected to mains voltage directly. This area is
placed at the rearmost left side of the board and is separated by a mark in the print. Design
precautions provide that body contact to live parts is impeded, but generally it is possible. After
switch-off of mains voltage, the capacitors at the rectifier lose their electric charge rather slowly,
so they keep hazardous voltage after separation from mains for a longer period of time.

HF Generator

The HF generator is a switchmode amplifier which operates at fixed frequencies. It consists of a

power stage which will be driven by a pulse pattern generator. Depending on the selected current
mode, this pulse pattern generator generates the different signals for this current mode. Between
the power stage and the output transformer, there is a matching circuit, the branches of which will
be selected by relays corresponding to the selected current mode. With the ME MB1, the output
signal of the power stage will be switched to a separate bipolar output transformer on activation of
the current mode "bipolar coagulation".

Setpoint Generator and Overdose Fault Monitor

The required HF output power will be set by rotary potentiometers. Corresponding to the selected
operation and current mode, the signal of one of these potentiometers will be selected, matched
to the current mode and fed to the SMPS as its setpoint value. This analogous signal path control
happens in the setpoint generator.

To prevent that a fault in the setpoint generator will result in an overrated output power, all
setpoint values in the units ME M1 and ME MB1 will be generated twice. While one of both values
is fed to the SMPS as its setpoint value, the other value is fed to a monitoring circuit which
compares it to the output value of the SMPS. If this circuit recognizes that both values differ too
much, then it interrupts the energy flow path by cutting off the auxiliary energy which is used to
drive the relays in the output circuit of the HF power stage which results in an interruption of the
link between power stage and HF output transformers.

Handpiece control circuit

Activation of HF power may be performed optionally and in the same manner by footswitch or by
an electrode handle with finger switches.

Activation of HF power by means of finger switches at the electrode handle is enabled by an

interface circuit which transfers the control signals by means of special optocouplers over the
required insulation barrier according to the IEC 601 standard. For the transfer of two signals over
a twin wire line, an encoding of current direction is performed in the handle which has to be
decoded in the interface circuit by two signal paths with counterwise current direction permittivity.
To keep compatibility to the three-pin connectors as known from the US market, the encoding for
this connectors has to be performed subsequent in the unit.

The power supply of this circuit is performed by a small converter, the output voltage of which will
be transferred over the insulation barrier by means of a transformer.

Neutral Electrode Monitoring

The units ME M1 and ME MB1 are able to monitor a neutral electrode for correct connection. For
this purpose, the neutral electrode will be connected to the unit with a cord with two wires to
which the current returning to the unit will be divided. These two wires may be linked either
together to a single-plated electrode or to both of the sections of a split-plated neutral electrode.
Monitoring of the neutral electrode is performed by monitoring the impedance between both of
these wires. With single-plated electrodes, a monitoring of connection of the electrode and of
non-interruption of the cord is possible, with spliced electrodes an additionally monitoring of
correct application at the patient which is part of the monitoring circuit in this case is possible. The
units need not to be set to the electrode type being used.

Rev 1.1 15
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

Controller

The ME M1 has a HF generator for monopolar operation mode which is controlled central by a
microcontroller system. With the ME MB1, the generator may be switched to bipolar operation
mode. The controller performs the functions as follows:

• Self test of the program memory and the peripherals

• Input of front key operation

• Permanent memory of front key settings

• Management of finger and footswitch signals

• Co-ordination of control signals

• Activation of HF generator

• Control of pulse pattern generation

• Selection of operation mode of HF generator

• Activation of the relays for current mode selection

• Control of indication lamps for activation and NE alarm

• Adaptive neutral electrode monitoring

• Activation of acoustic alarm signal

Besides the microcontroller, the activation of HF current has to be permitted by a parallel installed
circuit which is independent from the microcontroller system.

Safety Functions

Because a HF electrosurgery unit imposes input of energy to a patient treated with it, there is
generally a hazard for the patient, if this input of energy occurs without control. So there is a
requirement for minimizing this hazard to an acceptable low level by means of appropriate design
precautions as far as this is manageable from the unit's side.

Rev 1.1 16
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

From the unit's side, the fault conditions as follows shall be recocnized and managed:

• Unintended activation of HF power output

• Output power at a higher dose than set

with the ME M1 and ME MB1, there are a number of design precautions made to meet both of
this aspects.

An unintended activation may occur in three ways:

• Unintended operation of a finger or footswitch, this also means "jamming" after intended
operation as a consequence of a fault of an activation element.

• Unintended activation as a consequence of a fault in the control signal path of the external
accessory.

• Unintended activation as a consequence of a fault in the inner signal path of the unit.

The first item cannot be recognized reliably by devices incorporated into the unit. A technical unit
is not able to make a decision whether an operation of a switch by an external force was intended
by the user or not. Also, a technical unit does not differ between an intended operation of a switch
and a short of the cable or a rupture of a reset spring in the switch. So, with this safety aspect the
user has to be involved in the decision whether this is a case of fault or not.

Commonly HF electrosurgery units have an acoustic activation indicator which enables the user
to recognize also an unintended activation of power. So the safety problem is focused to the
reliability of this acoustic indicator.

At the ME M1 and ME MB1, the acoustic signal is generated by a programmable sound

generator. Activation of this sound generator can be performed either by the control or by a direct
signal of the HF power stage. In case of unusual long activation time (more than 15 Seconds) the
loudness of the activation signal rises because this may be a fault condition.

A check of the function of the activation signal is to be performed by the user before each use of
the unit.

In case that an activation key is operated before the unit is switched on, Hf output power is
disabled because this condition may occur if faulty accessory is connected to the unit.

Rev 1.1 17
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

The occurrence of overrated output power may be caused by faults as follows:

• Fault at one of the setpoint potentiometers or its connection cables

• Fault in the analogous signal path for SMPS output control

• Fault in the regulator circuit of the SMPS

The occurrence of one of this three faults would result in an output power which is not in
accordance with the setting of the rotary knob.

There is an overdose protection circuit incorporated into the ME M1 and ME MB1 to prevent this.
By use of double potentiometers, the setpoint value of each operation mode is present twice. The
signal paths of both setpoint values are separated from each other.

One out of both (identical) setpoint values will be fed to the SMPS as control voltage. The output
voltage of the SMPS will be compared with the second setpoint value.

Beyond a certain difference, the output power will be disabled. The compare circuit is designed in
a manner that its failure will result in a disabling of output power. This protection circuit acts both
at the controller system and directly at the current mode relays K1 to K4.

The controller system performs a self check on power-on of the unit.

A fault in the HF power stage and its HF output circuit cannot result in an increased power output
because there is no additional feed of energy to this parts of the circuitry.

Measuring the HF leakage currents

Measurement according to IEC 601-2-2 item 19.102:

Setting the HF power meter to measurement of HF leakage currents: Set power meter to 200Ω
and connect one of the terminals to ground potential, e. g. to the equipotential connector at the
rear side of the unit. The relevant value is the current.

Connect the other terminal to the neutral electrode socket by means of the measure cord while
the active electrode socket is left open without any cable connected to it. Activate the unit by
footswitch at all monopolar current modes with maximum power setting. An upper limit of 100mA
must not be exceeded.

Connect the not grounded terminal of the HF power meter to the active electrode socket (center
conductor of coax socket), plug shorted 1/4'' coax plug into neutral electrode socket to disable NE
monitoring alarm. Activate the unit at all monopolar current modes with maximum power setting.
An upper limit of 100mA must not be exceeded. Note that the measure cord left in the NE socket
instead of the shorted plug will increase the measured leakage current due to the additional
ground capacitance of this cable.

With the ME MB1: Connect the bipolar measure cord to the bipolar output socket and connect
one of the banana plugs to the not grounded terminal of the HF power meter. Activate bipolar
coagulation with maximum power setting by means of the footswitch. An upper limit of 70mA must
not be exceeded. Then repeat measure with the other banana plug instead of the first of the
measure cord connected to the HF power meter.

8. Alterations

8.1 Procedure

As experience shows, during their sales lifetime technical products undergo repeated technical
alterations due to steady product improvements. To the service this imposes the problem of
having several versions of the same type of unit and prior to each repair it must be clarified which
version is present.

Prior to any manipulation of the unit it is necessary to know the state of the version! With
the units ME M1 and ME MB1, this is indicated in the serial number:

ME MB1 XX XX XX XXXX

Type of unit

Hardware state

Software state

Year of production

Consecutive numbering

8.2 Hardware State

The hardware state is defined by:

• Revision state of boards

• Revision state of mechanical construction

• Revision state of alignments

The boards are equipped with two labels. One of the labels contains the manufacturer's identity
number C40-XXXX and a consecutive test number with signature or identity number of the tester.
The second label indicates the state of revision. If such a revision is present in the market, it will
be concern of the following items.

If such a board will be repaired at the manufacturer's site, it will get a third "repair" label. If
possible, such boards will be updated to the actual state of revision and, after complete test
procedure, will be used for repairs as exchange boards.

If it has the same MARTIN ordering code as the old part according to item 5.1, a board with a
higher state of revision may replace a board of lower state of revision (stepdown compatibility).
Vice versa, this is generally not valid!

Rev 1.1 43
Martin ME MB1 ME M1 Service Manual

What makes the difference between new revisions and their predecessors and which
compatibilities are valid will be explained in the items corresponding to the different
configurations. On release of a new revision, a description of the new configuration will be
created and distributed by the MARTIN Service Center by the same way like this service
documentation.

8.3 Software State

The operation codes and the tables for both of this microcontrollers are stored in the EPROMs
which are incorporated in these controllers. They are labelled as follows:

X.XX MB1 DXX

State of program

Membership of ME units

Distinction D10, D19

The program state designates the version of the operation code. The last two of three digits form
a continuing number which designates a stepdown-compatible revision while the first digit is
associated to the hardware configuration. On an software exchange, absolute care must be taken
that this first digit is identical to that of the replaced one. If this digit would be incremented, then
both of the following ones will be reset to zero.

There are no different program versions for ME M1 and ME MB1, the ME M1 will be equipped
with the same controllers as the ME MB1. The units ME M1 and ME MB1 have two independent
carriers of software D10 and D19. While D10 performs the control functions, D19 generates the
optical and acoustic activation and alarm signals and supports safety monitoring functions of the
unit. In contrast to other ME units, the program versions of both software carriers may be
different. The software version marked in the serial number determines a combination of both
software carrier versions.

On exchange of a software carrier for software updating, please note that the first digit of the
software version will be kept the same and that both of the further digits form a number which
shall not be less than that of the former software carrier.
