Research Method
A research method is a systematic plan for
conducting research. Sociologists draw on a variety of both
qualitative and quantitative research methods, including
experiments, survey research, participant observation, and
secondary data.E.g

General classification of Types:

1. Qualitative Research:
Qualitative research is a type of social science research that
collects and Work with non-numeric data.
2. Quantitative Research:
Which uses numerical data to identify large scale trends and
employs statistical operations to determine causal and
correlative relationships between
Variables.

Types on the basis of nature of study:

 Descriptive Research:
Descriptive research is defined as a research method that
describes the characteristics of the population or
phenomenon that is being studied.
 Analytical Research:

Analytical Research is primarily concerned. with testing

hypothesis and specifying and. interpreting relationships,
by analyzing the. facts or information already available.

Types according to research designs:

 Exploratory Research:
Exploratory research is defined as a research used to
investigate a problem which is not clearly defined. It
is conducted to have a better understanding of the
existing problem, but will not provide conclusive
results.
Conclusive Research:
Conclusive research is meant to provide information
that is useful in reaching conclusions or decision-
making.
 characteristics of research:
 Research is reflexive and self-critical.
 A systematic process of collecting and analyzing
information (data)
 Research is systematic.
 Research is replicable. Research is planned,
orderly,
 Research starts with questions. At the heart of
all research is questions and answers.
 Research is cyclical.
Goals:
 Description: Defining, classifying or
categorizing events and relationships to
describe the phenomena of interest.
 Prediction: Identifying relationships among
variables of particular phenomena
(through correlations) for estimating its
outcome in the future (to prediction).
 Explanation: Establishing casual
relationships among variables using
Empirical data helps to understand
dynamics of the phenomenon.
 Application: Applying the knowledge
generated through research to change
behavior of farmers and other
stakeholders. ?????
