Assignment scenario:01

M/s Tudawe Brothers is a Leading Construction Company in Sri Lanka and they have recently
signed the contract (Agreement) for construction of 03 storey multi-purpose building in
Sainthamaruthu. Assume that you are working as Quantity Surveyor in Tudawe and it has
appointed a group of technical representatives including yourself for the preliminary study of the
project.

Project Details:

Name: Construction of 03 storey multi-purpose building

Location: Sainthamaruthu
Starting Date: 01.05.2016 Floor Area: 1500 m2
Completion Date: 30.04.2017. Contract Period: 01 Year

Task 1 Grading
1.1 Explain the main three techniques that you can propose to investigate and P 1.1
evaluate sites.
1.2 As a professional technical staff; Compare the any two techniques used to P 1.2& M1.2
investigate and evaluate soils
1.3 By considering the classification and chemical composition; you are P 1.3& M2.6
requested to analyse soils
Task 2 Grading
2.1 “The classification and properties of soils affect substructure design” you P 2.1
are requested to explain the above
2.2 For the propsed construction site, mentioned in scenario; evaluate how the P 2.2, M 3.4 & D
water, chemicals and contaminated soils effect the design and
2.2
construction of a substructure.
Task 3 Grading
3.1 If the proposed building is targeted to construct as domestic buildings, P 3.1, M2.6, &
evaluate two different types of construction methods for walls and roof/s
D3.7
3.2 If the proposed building is targeted to construct as industrial and P 3.2,M 3.4 &
commercial buildings; then evaluate the types of construction used for the
D3.7
frame and covering of main superstructural elements
3.3 For the proposed building in above scenario; discuss the commonly used P 3.3
specifications for internal plastering and painting
3.4 If the technical team requested you to answer for question “Evaluate how P 3.4,
the installation of primary services affects the design of buildings”, then
M1.3 &D1.1
produce a written report
3
Building Construction Technology

Task 4 Grading
4.1 For the proposed building and to it’s services; explain the two main P 4.1
causes of decay and deterioration
4.2 Compare planned, cyclical and reactive maintenance works to be done P 4.2 & D2.3
during the maintenance period for the building specified in scenario.
4.3 “ There is a close relationship between the design, construction, P 4.3& D1.1
maintenance and the dilapidations”. For the proposed building Evaluate
the relationship between design, construction, maintenance and the causes
of dilapidations
