Stoichiometry Practice

The following problems are example stoichiometry problems. The answer to each problem is listed in
parenthesis so you can verify that you are doing these problems correctly.

1. Excess sodium reacts with chlorine gas to produce sodium chloride. If you began with 15 moles
of chlorine gas, how many moles of sodium chloride would you produce?

___Na + ___Cl2  ___NaCl (30 moles)

2. Magnesium reacts with oxygen to create magnesium oxide. If you had 15 moles of magnesium,
how many moles of oxygen would be used?
____Mg + ____O2  ___MgO (7.5 moles)

3. A sample of methane gas is burned with oxygen gas to create water and carbon dioxide. If there
was 25 moles of methane gas and excess oxygen, how many grams of water would be
produced?
___CH4 + ___O2  ___CO2 + ___H2O (901 g)

4. Aluminum reacts with chlorine gas to created aluminum chloride. If you have excess aluminum
and 2.5 liters of chlorine, how many grams of aluminum chloride would be produced? The
reaction took place at 26°C and 0.86 atm.
___Al + ___Cl2  ___AlCl3 (7.8 g)

5. Potassium reacts with chlorine gas to created potassium chloride. If you had 20 grams
potassium and excess chlorine gas, how many grams of potassium chloride?
___K + ___Cl2  ___KCl (38.1 g)
6. A reaction between iron and silver chloride produced silver and iron (II) chloride. If you started
with 5 moles of iron and 13 moles of silver chloride, how many moles of silver would be
produced? How much excess would remain?
___Fe + ___AgCl  ___Ag + ___FeCl2 (10 moles Ag)
(3 moles extra)

7. A reaction between lithium and copper (II) bromide produced copper and lithium bromide. If
you started with 0.45 moles of lithium and 0.85 moles of copper (II) bromide, how many moles
of copper would be produced? How much excess would remain?
___Li + ___CuBr2  ___Cu + ___LiBr (0.85 moles Cu)
(0.025 moles extra)

8. A combustion reaction occurs with propane and oxygen gas. If there were 10 moles of propane
and 25 moles of oxygen gas, how many liters of carbon dioxide would be produced if the
reaction took place at 25°C and 105 kPa? How many moles of excess would remain?
___C3H8 + ___O2 ___CO2 + ___H2O (354 liters)
(5 moles extra)

9. A combustion reaction occurs with butane and oxygen gas. If there were 10 liters of butane and
25 liters of oxygen gas, how many grams of water would be produced if the reaction took place
at 25°C and 105 kPa? How many moles of excess would remain in liters?
___C4H10 + ___O2 ___CO2 + ___H2O (14.7 grams)
(6.2 liters extra)
10. A reaction between sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid produced salt, water, and carbon
dioxide. If you began with 20 grams of sodium carbonate and 250 ml of 2.5M HCl, how many
liters of carbon dioxide gas would be produced if the reaction took place at 20°C and 95 KPa?
How many moles of excess remain?
___Na2CO3 + ___HCl  ___NaCl + ___H2O + ___CO2 (5 liters)
(0.25 moles)

11. A reaction between calcium chloride and lead (II) sulfate to produce calcium sulfate and lead (II)
chloride. When you used 20 ml of 3M calcium chloride and 40 ml of 2M lead (II) sulfate, you
collected 6 grams of calcium sulfate. What was the percent yield?
___CaCl2 + ___PbSO4  ___CaSO4 + ___PbCl2 (73%)

12. A reaction between silver nitrate and copper made silver and copper nitrate. When you used
300 ml of 4M silver nitrate and 20 grams of copper, you created 64 grams of silver. What was
the percent yield? What is the molarity of the copper (II) nitrate solution made?
___AgNO3 + ___Cu  ___Cu(NO3)2 + ___Ag (95%)
(1.05M)

13. A reaction between sodium sulfate and calcium nitrate made calcium sulfate and sodium
nitrate. When you used 250 ml of 4M calcium nitrate and 200 ml of 3M sodium sulfate, you
created 64 grams of calcium sulfate. What was the percent yield? How many moles of reactant
were left over?
