ATS (Automatic Tide System) FUNCTIONS
ATS TIDE HEIGHT DIAL
This dial indicates the tide height, direction (i.e. whether rising or falling) and
the approximate time to the next high or low tide.
You need to score a tide chart from your local surf shop (or newspaper) to
initially set this dial.
To set the ATS Tide Height Dial...
....for quickest setting:
Make sure that your watch is on the correct time and
date prior to setting the tide height dial, then from your
tide chart calculate the tide height right now then;
1.Make sure your watch is completely dry; 2.Unscrew the crown (as described
in Screw Crown section); 3.Pull the crown out to point B; 4.Turn crown anti-
clockwise/towards you to set the height hand to the correct height (each black
marker denotes approximately half hour intervals)

....for the most accurate setting;

From your tide chart note the last high tide time then; 1.Make sure your watch
is completely dry; 2.Unscrew the crown (as described in Screw Crown section);
3.Pull crown out fully to point C; 4. Set the time to exactly the last high tide time
as shown on your chart; 5. Push back crown to point B (half way); 6. Turn crown
anticlockwise/towards you to turn the Tide Height hand to HIGH; 7. Carefully
pull crown out fully; 8. Turn the hands to reset the correct time (note that the
Tide Height hand automatically turns also); 9. Push back crown fully in to point
A; 10. Fully screw in crown (as described in Screw Crown section)

Note: When adjusting your watch for daylight saving you will need to reset
your ATS Tide Height dial.

7
ATS TIDE RANGE DIAL (Only available on tidemaster styles)
There is no setting necessary for the ATS Tide Range dial. This dial is preset at
the factory to synchronize with the lunar cycle and as long as the Moon phase dial
is set accurately to your local area the Range dial will read correctly.
This dial indicates the difference between successive high and low tides. This
does not necessarily show very high or very low tides but rather the variant
of water movement from high to low and back to high again. When the hand
is in the grey area of this dial it indicates periods of maximum tidal range
called “Spring Tides.”
The black area indicates times of minimal tidal range known as “Neap Tides.”
Note: Neap tides occur on the first & last quarters of the moon’s cycle and
relate to the minimal tidal movement periods of the month.
Spring Tides occur on the full & new moon cycles and relate to the maximum
tidal move ment periods of the month.

BEZEL FUNCTIONS
To find out how to use the unique turning bezel of your watch refer to the BEZEL
INSTRUCTIONS section starting on page 59.

Important: Tidemaster watches must not be used for navigation at any time.
Tidemaster watches approximate the tides based upon average intervals and
lunar cycles. Local tide conditions can vary from their indicated display.

DESCRIPTION OF MODES & FUNCTIONS

There are SEVEN modes of operation. By depressing the MODE button there
is a visual indication of what function has been chosen, just check out the
boxes in the middle of the screen.

NT Normal Time: The display shows hour in 24hr Military time or in AM

& PM, minute, second, month, date, day of week, moon phase and & tide
conditions all till 2099.

local time, date and year, the moon phase will be correct for your area.
Daylight Saving Time: By simply pushing and holding for 5 seconds the START/
STOP (STR/STP) button, the normal time can be advanced one hour to show
Daylight Saving time. By pushing and holding for 5 seconds the START/STOP
button again, it will revert back to standard time.

AL Alarm Mode: By choosing a time, an alarm will sound each day at the
preselected time. The alarm is a strong chime and can be immediately shut off
by pushing any button or will automatically shut off after 30 seconds.

TM Countdown Timer: A countdown timer with duration from 1 second

to 99 hrs, 59 minutes, 59 seconds is easily selected. It can be started
and allowed to count down; or it can be stopped and restarted. At the end
of the countdown a full chime sounds for 30 seconds. Note : At the end
21
of the countdown the timer automatically starts to count up from zero.

to another time zone. We recommend you program the DT setting to your
home time and date, and program your NT setting to the new time zone
actual time and date. (You must do this if you want your daily alarm to work
correctly for the time zone you are in.)

HEAT BEZEL
HEAT BEZEL FUNCTION
The unique Rip Curl Heat Bezel, found on many Rip Curl watches, can be
used for countdown timing of 20, 30 and 40-minute periods - the common
heats in surfing competitions. The Heat Bezel countdown timer can also be
used for any other timing requirements (ie. sun exposure, parking meters,
appointments etc.)

To set the Heat Bezel Timer...

1.Turn your bezel by hand anticlockwise/to the left and align the Rip Curl
logo with the minute hand.

2.During the heat, the minute hand will automatically count down against
the bezel (with 5-minute interval markers), telling you at a glance how
much time is left.

LEATHER / PU STRAPS
To Change Your Strap:
To change your watch strap use the Rip Curl
watch tool, pin or paperclip to gently push the
solid pins through the case pin holes.

At the same time, carefully pull on the strap

until the bar releases.
When fitting your new strap ensure the bars
are seated well by tugging on both ends before
you wear your watch.

Note: Rip Curl leather straps are made of the finest oiled leather for long life.
But despite other’s claims, real leather cannot be made 100% waterproof.
Don’t wear leather in any water.

For water use, replace your leather strap with a suitable waterproof rubber
or velcro strap, Stainless Steel Straps are waterproof.

61
STAINLESS STEEL STRAPS
BAND LENGTH ADJUSTMENT:
Major Adjustments to the length of your strap must be made by removing
the correct amount of metal links to fit your wrist. Links should be taken
out as evenly as possible from both sides.

1. Note the direction of the small engraved arrows

on the back of strap links.

2. Use a thumb tack or Rip Curl strap tool firmly

push out the first split-pin in the direction of the
arrow. Fig.1

3. Pull out the split pin fully. The strap now

comes apart. Repeat this step for each link to
be removed. Fig.2

4. Now align the two ends of the strap and replace

the pin in the opposite direction of the arrow.
Be sure to note the correct end of the split pin
to insert. Fig.3

5. Firmly press the pin back into place using a

hard object. Next lightly tap the pin fully into
place. Fig.4

Repeat steps 2 to 5 on other side of band

62
Minor adjustments:
After the correct fit has been achieved final adjustments or changes can
be made as follows:
1. Use a thumb tack or Rip Curl strap tool slowly insert into the spring bar
hole at the clasp. (fig. 5) Join will release.
2. Move the spring bar to the desired hole for the perfect fit. (fig. 6). Be sure
to align both ends of the spring bar in the same set of holes.

Recommended Usage Table

100M / 330ft - Suitable for Water Sports. eg. Surfing, Snorkelling,

Swimming, Water Skiing.
200M / 660ft - Suitable for Water Sports. eg. Surfing, Snorkelling,
Swimming, Water Skiing, Scuba Diving to normal
depths.

Rip Curl watches are tested to the highest industry standards with the best
Swiss pressure testing equipment and are purpose built for Surfing !
NOTE : All Industry standards watch testing is done to an overpressure
situation in a static laboratory environment and does not signify a diving
depth. See recommended usage table.

Due to the fact that Surfing is in no way a static sport there are influences
that can effect a watches ability to keep water out. eg : Frequent tempera-
ture changes, salt water and big wipeouts can diminish the longevity of the
watches rubber seals.

To keep your watch in peak condition for Surfing we recommend every 24

months you have your watch seals replaced and fully tested at the Rip Curl
Watch Service Centre. (See page 69 for contact details.)

RIP CURL PTY. LTD. assumes no responsibility for any loss, or any claims by
third parties that may arise through the use of this watch.

64
