Course description
The objective of the first level course is to introduce the student to the Italian language,
covering the basic communicative tools that are useful for everyday interaction in Italy.
The course utilizes an integrated communication method that puts the student at the center of
the learning process in a cooperative relationship with the teacher. Grammatical theory will
be always connected with the practical use of the language.
The students will not only be taught the linguistic system, but will also be given strategies
and techniques that facilitate the learning process.
All of the didactic materials used throughout the course, such as textbooks and multimedia
devices, are in Italian.

Grading scale

below 60 F
2nd and 3rd absences - student will receive a lower grade – a deduction of 4 % for each
absence.
4 or more absences - student cannot receive a passing grade and must formally withdraw
from the course, except in the case of doctor certified illness.
Quizzes cannot be missed, but IF you miss it (even if it’s your 1st absence) you will receive 0
on the quiz and a 2% deduction from your overall final grade.
Exceptions to this scale may be made for extreme, unforeseen circumstances, and only at the
instructor’s discretion.
Consistently late arrival or early departure may affect your attendance grade, at your
instructor’s discretion.
Class Participation
Students are expected to actively participate and contribute to class discussion. Participation
grade requires more preparation and contribution, and if a student is not in class he/she is not
contributing or receiving the inputs of his/her classmates and teacher.
Class participation will count for 20%.
Homework
Please do all the exercises assigned every day. We will do many of these exercises together in
class. Lack of preparation will significantly lower your grade. Homework will count for 10%.

Week 4 Communicative objectives: Talking about one’s daily activities. Expressing the
frequency of daily activities. Indicating the duration of daily activities. Asking
Week 6 Communicative objectives: Asking and giving directions. Maps. Asking and
giving information about schedules and prices. Purchasing tickets. Reading a
train ticket. Booking a hotel room.
Grammar: Present indicative modal verbs: volere, potere, dovere. The
multiplier. The relative pronoun che. Ci vuole/ci vogliono. The interrogative
quando. The use of venire and andare.
Preparation for the written and oral Midterm Exam.
Week 11 Review and preparation for the written and oral Final Exam.
