Your Tasks Today!
1.What are functions?
2. How are real life situations represented using functions?
3. How are we going to construct mathematical model to represent real life
situations using functions?
4. How functions important in constructing model in real life situations?

WHAT’S NEW?
Can you figure this out?

For their presentation in an event, a group of medical students

hires a dance choreographer who charges Php 250 per hour, on top of her
service call of Php 400. Help the group of students model the problem so
that they can take care of the payments, given that their dance lesson
may last between three to seven hours. If the choreographer serves for
three hours, how much will the medical students pay? If she serves for
four hours, how much will the medical students pay? Make a table of
values showing the number of hours and the corresponding amounts of
payment.

B. Development WHAT I KNOW?

Given the following models, identify the kind of function being shown on each item by
choosing from the list in the box.
A.Linear function B.Quadratic function C. Polynomial Function
D.Piecewise Function E.One-to-One F. Many-to-One
1) f(x) = 7x
2) g(x) = x2

WHAT’S IN?
Discussion
Real life situations can be represented using functions. Examples are presented below

1.The price P of goods is a function of the demand (d) for it

What equation can you make out of the given situation?
Answer: P(x) = d
2.The traffic T condition is a function of the number of vehicles ( V )on the road
How are you going to represent a function using the given situation?
Answer: T(x)= V
3.The number N of the customers in a grocery is a function of the time t of the day
How are you going to create a model to represent the given situation?
Answer: N(x)= t
4.The number N of teachers in a certain school is a function of the school enrolment ( e )
What equation can you make out of the given situation? (N(x)= e
What is the independent variable? ( e)
Which is the dependent variable? ( N)

WHAT IS IT?
Let’s work with this?
Due to pandemic the capacity of traditional jeepney were reduced to fifty percent. A
jeepney passenger pays P10.00 for the first 4 km as fare(F) and an additional P3.00
for every succeeding distance x in kilometer.

How will you represent the given using function? Let us try first to complete the table
below:
x in km 2 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 15 24 30
F in pesos 10 10 13 16 19 22 25 28 43 73 88
PIECEWISE FUNCTION
¿ 10.00 , 1< x ≤ 4
F(x) = {
¿ 10.00+ 3.00(x−4), x >4 88, 73, 43, 28, 25

C. Engagement WHAT’S MORE?

Your turn!
Represent the following real life situations using function
1.A square has a side of 12 cm. Express the area of a square as a function of its
sides s
2.Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x book, if one shirt costs
P595.
3.A rectangle has x width and y length. Express the perimeter of the rectangle as
a function of its dimension x and y.
4. The circumference C of a circle is a function of the radius r. The relation is
described by the equation C = 2πr. Compute the circumference when the radius
is 10m.

WHAT I CAN DO?

Be Wise!
For their presentation in an event, a group of medical students hires a
dance choreographer who charges Php 250 per hour, on top of her
service call of Php 400. Help the group of students model the problem so
that they can take care of the payments, given that their dance lesson
may last between three to seven hours. If the choreographer serves for
three hours, how much will the medical students pay? If she serves for
four hours, how much will the medical students pay? Make a table of
values showing the number of hours and the corresponding amounts of
payment.

WHAT OTHER ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES CAN I ENGAGE IN? (ADDITIONAL

ACTIVITIES)

Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if

one meal costsP40.
One hundred meters of fencing is available to enclose a rectangular
area next to a river (see figure). Give a function A that can represent the area that
can be enclosed, in terms of x.

A user is charged P300 monthly for a particular mobile plan, which

includes 100 free text messages. Messages in excess of 100 are charged P1 each.
Represent the amount a consumer pays each month as a function of the number of
messages m sent
in a month.

D.Assimilation WHAT I HAVE LEARNED?

Think of real-life situations which can be represented by a piece-wise function.
Possible Answer: Internet payment;

WHAT CAN I DO? (ASSESSMENT)

Represents the following situation using a function/piecewise function.

1. A person is earning P600 per day to do a certain job. Express the

total salary S as a function of the number n of days that the person
works.

2. A videoke machine can be rented for P1; 000 for three days, but for
the fourth day onwards, an additional cost of P400 per day is added.
Represent the cost of renting a videoke machine as a piecewise
function of the number of days it is rented.
